Young Living Distributor

You are currently browsing the archive for the Young Living Distributor category.

Many don’t really know how Young Living works or they think that it works the same way as other companies when it comes to ordering, becoming a member, and becoming a distributor. In this article I’d like to dispel some of the confusion and misinformation so that you can make a more informed choice based on facts.

Becoming a Young Living member is very much the same as becoming a member of Sam’s Club or Cosco, with one big difference, you do NOT have to pay a yearly membership fee. As a matter of fact, there is no cost at all, other than than the price of the products, unless you want to become a wholesale customer or a distributor.

So, How Much Does it Cost…

The cost depends on which customer type you choose. I want you to select the option that is best for your needs. Here is the skinny on each:

As a “Customer” (retail) - it costs nothing except for the cost of the product(s) you want to buy, and  tax/shipping. Do NOT select this customer type if you want wholesale pricing, you will not get wholesale pricing if you select this customer type (even if you do purchase a Start Living kit, read below “Wholesale Customer.”

As a “Preferred Customer” (save 12%) - this option saves you 12% off retail but you ‘must’ be on the Essential Rewards program and order at least 50 PV worth of products of ‘your’ choice a month. Do NOT select this customer type if you want wholesale pricing – or – if you do not wish to be on Essential Rewards.

As a “Wholesale” Customer (save 24%) – anyone can be a wholesale customer by purchasing one of the five “Start Living” kits which range in price from $40 to $300. You will save 24% off of retail on all orders, effective immediately. (see the Start Living kits)

To maintain your wholesale pricing the ONLY thing you are required to do is have a yearly total of 50 PV – this means you only have to buy about $50 worth of product a year to maintain your wholesale pricing – which is nothing.

When you go to join up as a wholesale customer you will need to select the “Independent Distributor” customer type and purchase one of the five Start Living kits. If you do not do this you will not get wholesale pricing.

Note: the “wholesale” and “Distributor” membership types are combined for ease – you do not have to have a business and you do not have to make monthly orders unless ‘you’ want to, the choice is entirely yours. I do want to point out that if you do join Essential Rewards you will save more money, an additional 10% to 20%, read more about Essential Rewards below.

As a “Distributor” (save 24%) - anyone can be a Young Living Independent Distributor and have a home business and share Young Living with others. To do this you will purchase one of the five “Start Living” kits ranging in price from $40 to $300. You will save 24% off of retail on all orders, effective immediately. (see the Start Living kits)

Note: As a distributor you will have to be on Essential Rewards in order to get a commission check. Your monthly order should be a minimum of 100 PV (about $100, plus tax/shipping). You choose which ever combination of products you want each month, Young Living has well over 400 to choose from, I’ve never heard anyone complain that they don’t know what to get because the selection is too limited, I only ever hear newbies say, “wow, there’s so much I want from Young Living that I don’t know where to begin!” If that’s the case with you, let me know, I can help you sort through what we have and your needs so you can get started with products that you will immediately start using.

More on Supplementing Your Income and Home Business

So, very simply put… there is no cost… unless you want to be a wholesale customer or a distributor, in which case it’s a one-time $40 – $300 fee for a Start Living kit; which by the way, they all come with product and a mail-in coupon worth 50% off on a diffuser (which means you are getting product you can use for your one-time member fee).

As shown in this chart, you can see which requirements are necessary for each customer type. Young Living is quite reasonable and makes every effort to keep it easy for you to purchase and become the customer type that works best for ‘your’ needs.

11 Common Misunderstandings

1. You ‘have’ to buy products every month. False.

Buying products every month with Young Living is completely optional unless you choose to be a distributor and get a commission check.

2. I have to buy products every month whether I want them or not. False.

We do NOT want you to buy products you do not need, ever. You order what you want, when you want – though I have to point out that you will save an additional 10% – 20% when you’re on the Essential Rewards program as a Preferred Customer, or a Wholesale Customer/Distributor.

3. If I become a wholesale customer I will have to sell and/or push my friends and family to buy products. False.

You can be a wholesale customer the rest of your life if you like, you never have to sell a thing ever. You also will NOT be pushed to sell anything, ever.

4. I have to buy ‘packs’ every month. False.

Unlike other companies, Young Living does NOT require you to buy packs every month. We do have some very nice packs available that contain useful products most use daily, but no one is ever required to buy them – packs are 100% optional and ONLY available to those on the Essential Rewards program.

5. I have to buy the same things every month. False.

Young Living has a very extensive product line, well over 400 products to choose from. You are encouraged to buy whatever you want – always!

Even if you want to get the best pricing through being on the Essential Rewards program, by all means change your order every month – get your favorites that you’re running low on and try a new oil each month, it’s exciting and a terrific way to experience something new in your life regularly.

6. There are hidden costs and/or other things I need to pay for. False.

Which ever membership type you choose the price is the price and that’s that. There are never any additional charges for anything ever.

7. Every year I will have to pay a membership fee. False.

There is no yearly membership fee for any of the customer types. If you want to be a wholesale customer or distributor there is a one-time purchase of a Start Living kit. Purchasing 50PV worth of product a year WILL maintain your wholesale pricing.

8. If I want to have a Young Living home business I will have to do cold calls and become a sales person. False.

Nothing could be further from the truth. At Young Living we do not do telemarketing, nor do we push or pressure others to buy anything ever. We work from the principles of “Heart-Centered Sharing” approach – which does not include high-pressure sales pitches or making a list of 100 people you know and pushing them to buy products.

9. It will be costly to start up as a distributor, I will need a lot of money to carry an inventory, and I will have to find a place to set up shop to sell the oils/products directly to people. False.

As a distributor, you are never required to carry an inventory. Some distributors might carry some items in limited quantities if they are doing health expo’s, but that’s optional (the least you need to do a show is to have some samples). Additionally, you do NOT have to have a store or a display in a shop.

How your customers will get the products: their order is shipped through FedEx, Young Living drop-ships everything for us. I personally find this to be excellent, after over 35 years of having conventional retail and wholesale businesses it is a god-send that I do NOT have to have a small fortune tied up in inventory, space to house the inventory, space designated for shipping, and schlepping product around to retail locations, and driving all over delivering it to people (not that I don’t want to see people, just that it’s extremely expensive to be driving around these days and I’m into being efficient). Because I do not carry an inventory I never have to deal with additional bookkeeping or quarterly sales tax (both of which I hate doing) Young Living does all of that for us – that leaves me with more time to do the other things that I do enjoy!

10. I want to buy Young Living products without becoming a member of anything.

I’m not exactly sure what people are thinking when they make that statement. But I want you to know that it’s not like you’re joining something that will make demands on you personally or financially, it’s quite the contrary.

Actually what’s going on is this, because Young Living essential oils are used differently than your average aromatherapy oils the company wants to make sure that each customer has access to someone who can help them learn how to use the oils properly, this is why you never see Young Living oils sold in stores; the staff is not trained to help customers in that way.

Also, Young Living is set up to eliminate the middleman. Yes, it is a Network Marketing company (not a pyramid, those are illegal) which allows people like you and me to have a home business and an income should one decide to become a distributor. This means that the cut, or percentage that normally goes to the middleman in the chain is given to the distributors for their work and efforts. It’s just a different way of splitting up the money so that it goes to distributors, rather than a corporation who provides a service in the chain of events that goes into every single thing that is sold everywhere, everyone gets a cut whether you buy products from Whole Foods, WalMart, Cosco, or popcorn at a movie theatre there are people along that long line of hands items pass through that get a cut. In the case with Young Living, the product does not go through a long line of people; the products go through the company, then me, then into your hands. Like I said, it’s just a different way of distributing the percentage that goes to the middleman.

In short, the reason why a membership is necessary is so that when, let’s say… I meet you and you want to make a purchase with me that you become my customer. And each time after that when you make a purchase I get a commission for my efforts in assisting you and helping you to learn more about using our oils and products. You are assigned a member number as a means by which Young Living can keep track and sort through all of the customers to make sure that I am the one who gets the commissions instead of someone else. It’s not like you’re becoming a part of some strange and obnoxious community or anything like that.

11. I live in Canada and will have to pay additional fee’s and customers costs. False.

For all orders you place with Young Living select the shipping method called “IGD” and the total on your purchase will be the price you pay, no additional expenses! Your order will usually arrive within 10 business days or less, unless you choose express shipping.

12. I can get the same quality essential oils at my local health food store for less. False.

The reason essential oils would be cheaper than Young Living’s is ONLY because they are of much lesser quality. You can safely assume that you get what you pay for holds true in regards to this too. I have never been in any health food store, or shop for that matter, that sells any brand that even comes close.

In terms of using essential oils, if you’re going to use them in the ways we discuss you most certainly do NOT ever want to use a lesser quality essential oil. You have no idea how bad the quality is in this industry. Which is precisely why I was over-joyed when I discovered Young Living over 10 years ago – I was sick and tired of spending a small fortune on adulterated and diluted essential oils that ALWAYS turned rancid in 6-8 months. People who buy cheaper essential oils are in reality spending 2 to 4 times as much on junk oils in the long run.

As either a wholesale customer or distributor on Essential Rewards I am getting my superior quality Young Living oils (and products too) at nearly 45% off retail. How can that be??? I’m in the 20% bracket in the Essential Rewards program – take that 20% and add it to the 24% wholesale discount and you’ve got 44% off retail pricing! If you’re currently using, or thinking of using, a cheaper essential oil; I can assure you that you ARE spending a small fortune on junk. Oh, and I have never had to throw away a bottle of my Young Living oils because they’ve turned rancid, and I DO have a few oils that are 8 years old. Think of a high quality essential oil as a fine wine; it wont go bad, you’ll never have to throw it away, and like fine wines some essential oils even get better with age.

Essential Rewards: what is it, and why you want to be interested

The largest plus to you is that it will save you a lot of money in the long-term. It’s a free program Young Living created that gives you rewards points that you can redeem for FREE product!

Essential Rewards is 100% optional for everyone except for: Preferred Customers, and those who choose to have a home business and want a commission check as a distributor.

How you earn reward points…

Months on Essential Rewards, Points Earned:

  • Months 1–6 you get 10% in points
  • Months 7–12 you get 15% in points
  • Months 13+ you get 20% in points

The minimum monthly order on Essential Rewards is 50 PV, about $50 wholesale, plus tax and shipping.

I’ve been on Essential Rewards for over 4 years now, which means I’m in the 20% bracket. I choose to redeem my reward points 4 times a year, you can redeem yours more or less frequently. This means that I get about $600 worth of free product a year – that adds up to a savings of about 45% off the retail prices. Because I am a distributor, my monthly orders are between $110 – $130 a month – Young Living gives me 20% of that in rewards points every month.

While you’re in the 10% bracket, it doesn’t really ‘feel’ like you’re gaining a lot… but wait until you’re in the 15% and 20% bracket… Wow, you can feel the savings!

The thing I like most about the Essential Rewards is that I am getting high quality nontoxic oils and products for about the same cost people spend to buy the cheap brands in the store! This makes me feel so smart and empowered. Empowered because I have taken my health into my own hands and I’m NOT exposing myself, family and dog to horrible toxic products (this saves a fortune on health care costs), my household is a safe haven and healthy for us at the same cost as buying products that I shun in the stores. I am getting a lot for my money by using Young Living oils and products.

One perfect example is the conditioner, I have very long hair and I only have to buy 2 bottles of Young Living conditioner a year! That means it costs me less than $15 a year for my conditioner – are you seeing better now why I feel ’smart’ and ‘empowered’? To add to that, prior to using Young Living shampoo and conditioner I had to switch brands every month due to the build-up on my hair… until one day about 9 years ago I decided to try Young Living’s shampoo and conditioner.

For the past 9 years I haven’t switched brands once, not even once! These shampoo’s and conditioner’s do not leave build-up on your hair, ever! On top of that, they don’t contain any chemicals that are hazardous to my health. Like I said, ’smart’ and ‘empowered.’ I have tons of other stories like this, some of which are in this blog.

The point I’m trying to make is that there are so many smart and empowered things we all can be doing, they’re easy, they make us feel good, they’re good for the environment, and they save us a ton of money over time.

When you’re initially making the switch over to Young Living (from toxic products you’re currently using and yes, the essential oils can and do replace many products we use daily) can feel a little expensive at first, my advice is… try to see past that and just know that after you get switched over and have your nontoxic household in place, particularly if you’re on Essential Rewards, you will most certainly feel the savings every single month. You will also spend less time shopping and driving because the Young Living oils and products can be used in dozens of ways.

A good example is Peppermint essential oil, one day I counted 26 different ways I use Peppermint, one bottle of essential oil can replace dozens of other products that are commonly used (here’s how we used it to get rid of a squirrel). I’ll have to write an article on that soon and put a link here so you can see what I mean. Overall, if you’re looking to make the switch to go truly natural, save your health and a lot of money – you can do it with Young Living and I can show you how. Contact me if you have questions.

In Conclusion: How much does it cost to join Young Living?

  1. Nothing if you want to be a retail customer.
  2. The least amount to become a wholesale customer is $40, but can go up to as high as $300 depending on which Start Living kit ‘you’ choose.
  3. The minimum amount to be a “Preferred Customer” or on the Essential Rewards program as a Wholesale Customer / Distributor is 50PV a month – which is a little over $50 a month wholesale, add 12% to that if you choose Preferred Customer.

More Tips from the Mommy Trenches!

  1. 2 Extra Changes of Clothes for baby-(this may be a given, but here’s one that is not…
  2. An extra change of clothes for you! That’s right! Throw-up, leaky diapers, spills, you name it-it can and will happen! After only two children, I can tell you there will be a point in time when you will be very, very glad you have an extra change of clothes for yourself with you.
  3. A diaper pad. These are a good idea since God knows what could be on public changing tables! And, they will especially come in handy for the many public places that for some strange reason do not have changing tables (you only notice this absurd fact after you become a parent)!
  4. Hand sanitizer. We have all heard how dangerous the regular kinds can be, and how they are especially poisonous for children who lick their fingers. Since babies have a tendency to “chew and suck” on mama’s fingers as well as their own, I don’t use the regular kinds. I like to use Thieves, all natural, non-toxic, chemical free hand sanitizer (available here). It is really nice having this safe alternative available, especially considering that most babies majority of time is spent on the floor (which is fine in my home but not so much so at someone else’s!
  5. Thieves Disinfectant Spray. All natural, non-toxic, and safe for you and baby (available here). Great to use in places like bathrooms, and in places the  wipes are hard to use. This is also great for deodorizing. (Read this article for reasons why you shouldn’t use regular disinfectant sprays around your children).
  6. Empty plastic bags. You will need these for icky diapers and clothes that are soiled from the icky diapers!
  7. Spit- up cloths. This way, you will maybe be able to limit how many times you will need that extra change of clothes for yourself!
  8. Extra pacifiers, teether’s and toys. I am positive babies like to deliberately drop their pacifiers and toys onto the floors just to see how many times us mom’s will pick them up! Germ infested, filthy public floors mean nothing to baby, but they will assure you won’t be giving the toy’s back to the wee one, so substitutes are important (you may want to look for those ring links while out and about too)!
  9. 2 Bibs. Whether you are eating out, or just fed your baby, having a bib on them will perhaps save you from having to change their clothes as many times as you otherwise would have.
  10. Teething tablets/gel. I cannot count the number of times my little ones were teething, and having these in the diaper bag saved the day! I refuse to use regular kinds with drugs in them because of the possible side effects (including death). I LOVE Boiron-Camilia Teething Drops though, they are homeopathic and really seem to work wonders! Hyland’s teething tablets and gel are also good.
  11. In addition to diaper wipes, cleaning wipes are a very smart must have. You can use them for wiping off toys your little one dropped onto the floor, and for shopping carts and restaurant high chairs. Did you know you can make your own wipes? Click here for directions on how and reasons why you should make your own!
  12. DI-Gize Essential Oil*. This could be your greatest investment for your little one’s comfort and your sanity-especially out in public should your little one come down with a screaming belly ache!  Since you don’t use much, one bottle get you through however many babies you plan to have and then some! Simply dilute one drop in a teaspoon of olive oil and rub it onto the baby’s tummy. (This tip comes from Gentle Babies: Essential Oils and Natural Remedies for Pregnancy, Childbirth and Infant Care’ by Debra Raybern, N.D., M.H., C.N.C, I.C.A.).

In 1994 Chinese scientists first isolated an unusual glycoprotein complex that they called “Lycium barbarum polysaccharide.” Researchers began to document that this low-glycemic long-chain molecule was responsible for many of the NingXia province wolfberry’s strong immune-boosting and cardioprotective properties. Research on this intriguing polysaccharide continues throughout the world.

Researchers also discovered that the protein arm of the molecule contained more than 18 amino acids (proteins), while the sugar linkage contained not only the plentiful sugars glucose and galactose, but also the rare and vital sugars arabinose, rhamnose, xylose, and mannose.

The essentials sugars in the NingXia wolfberry polysaccharides provide immune system and heart health benefits and the ingredients for optimal cellular communication and DNA protection. The most amazing thing about these necessary sugars is that they are low glycemic!

What is the Glycemic Index

The glycemic index measures the rate that carbohydrates break down and release glucose into the bloodstream. High-glycemic foods have a dangerous effect on insulin secretion. As poor food choices push more and more people into diabetes, high-glycemic foods must be avoided. High-glycemic foods also play a role in obesity rates increasing in every state except Oregon in 2004.1

Most juices have a higher glycemic index than the fruits they are derived from. NingXia Red juice has been extensively tested and found to be low glycemic, with a score of 11. You might wonder how that is possible with all the sugars found in wolfberries. Well, apparently the fiber in wolfberries keeps the sugars from “spiking” in the blood, which can make NingXia Red a very healthy choice.

NingXia Red and Essential Sugars

Of the eight essential sugars, the NingXia wolfberry has six. NingXia Red delivers these sugars as part of ‘whole’ foods rather than as a concoction of isolated ingredients often marketed. Considering that NingXia Red juice also contains blueberries, raspberries, pomegranates, apricots, and dark grapes-all of which are well known for their health benefits – NingXia Red is, in fact, a wonderful source of all eight essential sugars.

Sugar Profile of NingXia Wolfberry

  • 62.70% – Glucose
  • 14.80% – Mannose
  • 13.30% – Xylose
  • 4.30% – Galactose
  • 1.03% – Rhamnose
  • Arabinose*
  • Fucose*
  • Neuramic*

(* yet to be determined)

Glucose and Galactose have the ability to convert into the missing Fucos and Neuramic, but minerals are necessary to make that conversion. NingXia Red juice also has an abundance of minerals in forms most easily assimilated.

Super Oxides

Today, the ORAC test is much more sophisticated. It has been expanded to cover more free radicals: the hydroxyl (HORAC), peroxynitrite (NORAC), and superoxide (SOD.) The superoxide free radical is the most prevalent in the body and also generates other free radicals, it is also the most damaging of all free radicals.

The SOD test measures superoxide scavenging activity. The NingXia wolfberry again is unparalleled in its ability to scavenge and squelch the superoxide free radical-much like a “search and destroy” mission.

Why do I keep specifiying “NingXia Wolfberry?” Why would it be any different than any type of Goji Berry?

When tested it was found that all wolfberries, or Goji Berries as the red berry is often called, are not created equal nutritionally. Apparently much of the nutritional difference in the berries of the Lycium barbarum species depends on ‘where’ the shrub is grown.

Basically it work like this, if the nutrients are deficient in the soil it will produce a deficient, or less nutritious, plant or fruit.

This is very easy to understand when we look at the nutritional value of many of our common vegetables today. For instance, you may have already heard that our produce today is severely lacking in nutrients compared to the exact same vegetable of 50 years ago. When spinach was tested in the 1950s it had 72 grams of iron. Today, it’s down to a shocking 5 grams!

It should be no surprise that poor farming practices are the most likely reason why our food is severely lacking in the most basic nutrients and minerals. The same is true of the goji berry. This is why I am stressing “NingXia Wolfberry” – it is a powerhouse of nutrition because of the nutrient dense soil and water in the NingXia area of China.

With that in mnd, let’s take a look at how some of the better known red energy drinks compare when tested at the third party lab facility Brunswick Laboratory…

Quite often I’m also asked about other energy juices which are not specified on this particular report and how they compare to NingXia Red. The fact is, they are just as bad, if not worse, than the competitors listed in this document. Young Living does not scrimp on testing our own products or our competitors. Furthermore, when NingXia Red juice was tested it scored so high above competitors that at first no one believed it was possible. So after asking Brunswick Labs to run the test two more times (and the score remained exactly the same) Brunswick Lab told Young Living, “you’re going to have to accept the numbers, we are not running any further tests on NingXia Red.”  This means that we too have to accept that NingXia Red absolutely trounces all of the other energy juices out there, regardless of what any of them say or claim.

For those who prefer a visual statements

It requires one to drink this much of a competitors juice to equal “one – ounce” of NingXia Red…

How much Fruit and Vegetables do You Have to Eat to Equal “One – Ounce” of NingXia Red?

How much does NingXia Red cost?

For the cost of a Star Buck’s coffee you can have 2-4 servings of NingXia Red juice per day!

  • NingXia Red 1 liter bottle – $1.17 per 1 oz. serving*
  • NingXia Red 2 Pack – $1.13 per 1 oz. serving*
  • NingXia Red 4 Pack – $1.10 per 1 oz. serving*
  • NingXia Red Combo Pack – $1.25 per 1 oz. serving*
  • NingXia Red Singles 30 Pack – $1.33 per 1 oz. serving*
  • NingXia Red Singles 100 Pack – $1.15 per 1 oz. serving*

* these costs are based on the “wholesale/distributor” prices – I highly recommend becoming a wholesale customer. No – you don’t have to sell anything and you do NOT have to buy stuff you don’t want every month either – if you have questions about this simply contact me or read more about being a wholesale customer.

The cost of NingXia Red for a “retail” member – simply add 24% . At retail, a 1 liter bottle will cost $1.54 per 1 oz. serving.

You may also like to know that NingXia Red juice does ‘not’ contain any ‘junk’ juices, such as: white grape juice, pear juice, apple juice – all of these are very high in sugar and have very little if any nutritional value.

Additional Studies

Gerontologists at Peking University found that a minuscule amount of wolfberry (0.025 percent) in a culture medium allowed an increase in the number of times human lung cells could divide from forty-nine times to sixty-one times.2

From the book, Discovery of the Ultimate Superfood, “Using wolfberry in the nutrient broth, researchers effectively increased the lifespan of the lung tissue by 22 percent.”

In addition, there is also an ingredient synergy at work in NingXia Red as the raspberries, blueberries, and pomegranates in the juice are also potent antioxidants. Even the essential oils of orange and lemon in this powerful juice contain the antioxidant d-limonene.

NingXia Red Testimonials

“We have been using NingXia Red for a month now and when I asked my fourteen-year-old daughter if she noticed any difference, she replied, ‘I don’t feel sick all the time. Now I’m going to have to fake it to miss time from school!’ We laughed and I told her I would like to go on a day trip with her sometime—maybe I will let her take a sick day for that.” ~ Marina Thornton

“NingXia Red has given me a boost in energy—and having a very active job of setting up and taking down temporary exhibits at a natural history museum, I can use it. Thank you for making my life better. I am now registered to be a distributor, and will spread the good word about this wonderful product.” ~ Craig Yaneki

“Last month my massage therapist asked me what I have been doing differently. She thought perhaps I was detoxing so that the muscles could get more nutrients, but I told her that I had started taking a great tasting infusion called NingXia Red. Wow! What an endorsement for continuing to drink the most astounding nutrient infusion I have ever found! Thank you, Young Living, for introducing me to this phenomenal product called NingXia Red!” ~ B. J. Rylander

“I typically use two ounces of NingXia Red each morning when I wake up, and during high-stress times, I use one to three ounces more during the day. The results have my husband now interested in the Young Living product line, and our patients have even noticed a difference in my energy levels at the office. I also know that the difference has been significant enough that the people around me have taken notice and are now looking at Young Living products with interest themselves.” ~ Marilynn Alvarez

“I’m drawn to eating sugary foods. However, when I drink NingXia Red regularly it takes away my sugar cravings. This is nothing less than a miracle for me.” ~ Hope Smith

“I have never used my sick time at work since drinking NingXia Red. Evelyn's Class and Webinar Schedule

A few years ago I purchased a copy of Dr. Russell Blaylock’s video, “Behavior and Nutrition.” What I found most helpful is the way he explains ‘how’ our food choices make very profound differences in our health and our behavior. Nutrition in general is an area that I’ve been interested in since I was 10 years old, it wasn’t until I was 16 that I became aware just how much a difference it makes. Since then, it has been a hobby of mine to stay up to speed on the ‘good’ science available (yes, there is a lot of bad science out there) and perhaps even more importantly… what’s happening in the food industry.

Over the years I have noticed that my health was quite different than most, in particular compared to my peers. I wasn’t getting the same illnesses as they were and I still don’t. I know this is due to the choices I’ve made… even if those around me thought I was kooky or extreme. I am the only one I’ve personally known who has never had a disease, a condition, and have never been on any type of drug either over-the-counter or pharmaceutical.

Here are some of the things I have completely stood by:

  • If it’s low-cal, low fat, no-cal: I avoid it like the plague
  • I want most of my food to be ‘whole’: not processed, not pasteurized, not reduced calorie, or enriched
  • Buy local and in season and/or grow my own either in a garden or container garden
  • NO Fluoride!!! No fluoride in my drinking water, my toothpaste, or in my mouthwash. I use and recommend Thieves Ultra Toothpaste and Thieves Mouthwash; they are the ONLY ones I have ever found to be edible and extremely effective, I’ve never found anything that even comes remotely close to these.
  • No store bought meats… even if they are organic! All of the meat I buy MUST be from animals that are completely pasture and grass raised. and I get my fish from Vital Choice Seafood (they too are the best).

I don’t even want eggs from chickens that have been fed ‘organic’ feed for the fact that a chickens diet is suppose to contain insects, seeds, grasses, and weeds that are found in nature outdoors, not an organic vegetarian diet (whoever thought that was a good idea has got to be nuts). A chicken whose diet consists of little more than organic feed is a nutritionally deficient chicken which produces nutritionally deficient eggs.

Twenty years ago I suspected that the organic label was hogwash, turns out I suspected correctly. The organic industry has changed so significantly that the word ‘organic’ has come to mean virtually nothing these days (since the USDA took over and literally changed the criteria and standards in the industry).

My 6 Easy Tips for Eliminating Horrible Stuff

  • Shop mindfully: this means not making a selection simply because it appears convenient
  • Get rid of toxic household and personal care products: I make my own with essential oils, it’s super easy, convenient, smells wonderful and completely eliminates my exposure to products used daily. Here are some of the super easy recipes you too can make with essential oils – it’s amazing how easy it is and how good it is for us and the environment. Note: do NOT use any ol’ brand of essential oil though as they are loaded with chemicals and solvents – you do not want to defeat the purpose!
  • Avoid so-called convenience foods, particularly those you toss in the microwave
  • When you do cook, cook extra so you can have leftovers or save them in the freezer (this is the homemade equivalent of fast food) – My Real Veggie Burger Recipe and more of my favorite recipes
  • Give up something you currently do that really doesn’t serve you well, the time spent doing such things gives you time to do something that’s better for you
  • Read the label: it’s appalling what’s in products and foods today and turning a blind-eye to the ingredients list is like playing with fire, it’s only a matter of time before the house burns down, our bodies.

I personally have found that applying the above has saved me an enormous amount in health care costs and I’m well almost all of the time.

Here is the video by Russell Blaylock, MD on “Nutrition and Health”

A summary of the effects of nutrition on behavior:

Brain Allergies

  • Food allergies associated with neurological effects
  • Immune factors interact with the brain
  • Lethargy, stupor, disorientation, paranoia, delusions, hallucinations, agitation, rage, panic attacks, criminal behavior and seizures

Allergies found in all people with Schizophrenia

  • 88% were allergic to wheat
  • 60% were allergic to cow’s milk
  • 50% allergic to corn
  • 100% were allergic to gliadin or gluten

In one study, when 50% of the group of Schizophrenic’s were taken off of gliadin and gluten almost all of them returned to normal. It was also observed that when they got back on gliadin or gluten, even a very small amount of it, they were fully Schizophrenic again and had to be hospitalized.

Food Cravings

  • Food allergies, very often, make you crave the food you are allergic to
  • Food allergies and hypoglycemia are linked (adrenal effect)

Leading Foods for Allergies

  • Milk (juvenile offenders drink the most milk)
  • Wheat
  • Corn
  • Coffee
  • Eggs
  • Potato
  • Peanuts
  • Soy (is the leader in food allergies and is in most foods) Myth: soy prevents breast or prostrate cancer. Fact: there is evidence that shows soy WILL make breast cancer grow faster.

Research Showing a Connection Between Nutritional Status and Brain Function

  • Animals fed lard (animal fat) had impaired spatial learning and temporal memory
  • Newer studies found impaired ability to learn and remember with saturated animal fats
  • Omega 3 fats improved depression, memory retention and thinking, and have even been shown to improve Schizophrenia (that’s because the brain uses a lot of Omega 3s for its membrane). DHA makes up about 50% of all the membranes in the nervous system. Thousands of studies have shown a connection between DHA and intake of Omega 3s in the eyes.
  • Animals eating foods grown with pesticides, industrial chemicals and herbicides – these become stored in ‘their’ body fat.
  • The brain is more than 60% fat, having the highest fat content of any organ, and retains chemicals for a lifetime. Chemicals in the brain can have tremendous effects n neurological function.

Research

  • When Omega 3s are low, level of DHA, in neurons it correlated with violent behavior. Alcoholism causes a fall of DHA level in the brain.
  • When body DHA is low and MSG levels are high it dramatically increases violent activity
  • Lead  is known to significantly increase violent behavior, suicide and juvenile delinquency. A study done in 380,000 school children found that even a slight increase in lead levels produced horrendous rates of violent crime and arrests. Lead, in very small amounts can have profound implications in terms of brain function.

Factors Affecting Brain Function

All of these play a role in brain toxicity and your behavior. In the list below, these are not minor things; they are ‘key’

Regular Diet

  • Fats: your ratio of Omega 6s to Omega 3s (they should be about equal). Omega 6s are corn, peanut oils (your cooking type oils). Omega 3s are from wild cold water fish and Omega Blue supplement and from livestock raised entirely free-range (note: organic is NOT the same as grass range). When these are not in balance we are terribly altering brain function.
  • Carbohydrates
  • Proteins
  • Fruits and vegetables

Antioxidant Intake

  • Vitamins
  • Minerals
  • Flavonoids
  • Thiols

Protection for the brain and every cell in the body.

Balance of Hormones

  • Testosterone
  • Estrogen
  • Thiroid

Artificial estrogen is brain toxic, natural estrogen is brain protective. When you see studies saying there was increased stroke, dementia with estrogen replacement, they were using artificial estrogen’s which produce about half a dozen different brain neurotoxin’s. So, when you get Premorin from the doctor, you’re getting a brain toxin.

Thyroid function makes a big difference, particularly in pregnant women. Every woman who is thinking of becoming pregnant should get a thyroid test done because it is shown that even marginal deficiencies in thyroid in the mother can result in permanent deficiencies in the babies brain that are un-repairable.

Environmental Toxins

  • Aluminum
  • Mercury
  • Lead
  • Cadmium
  • Fluoride
  • MSG
  • Aspartame
  • Pesticides
  • Herbicides
  • Industrial Solvents
  • Food Dyes
  • Excessive Vaccination

Over immunization causes the brain to over function, this is why we are seeing a rise in ADD and ADHD, the immune reaction from the vaccine goes on for years, nonstop. The brain becomes inflamed and this is what causes the brain dis-function, this is shown repeatedly in every kind of study you can imagine.

In this list, there are synergistic effects. Every one of us are exposed to these things daily, and some in very high levels. Reducing these can have very significant effects on the body and on our health. Taking even small steps and reducing exposure, will over time, produce beneficial results.

Is that old saying still around? “Fish is brain food.” I recall hearing it when I was little and thought it was cool, at the time I never associated with brain function as we age though, I simply thought that eating fish would make us smarter, apparently it does much more than that!

Well, it turns out that the types of fish high in omega 3s are good for our aging brains and have been linked to reduced rates in Alzheimer’s disease and certain forms of dementia. Even though more studies need to be performed and longer in duration, it’s still nice to know that there are many beneficial effects from fish and omega 3s.

In a study at Quebec’s Laval University the team paid particular attention to DHA: the omega-3 that constitutes a large proportion of the fatty acids in brain cell membranes and is essential to proper brain function.

Along with EPA, brainy DHA is one of the two key omega-3s in human cells, with fish and fish oil being the only substantial food sources.

The Canadians wrote, experimental studies show that rodents bred to develop Alzheimer’s-like conditions easily are more likely to do so when their bodies are deficient in DHA.

Likewise, most lab studies show when rodents are fed more DHA they acquire fewer, milder signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s, and get them more slowly. And, people who report eating diets high in DHA – from fish and/or fish oil – are less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of senility (Calon F, Cole G 2007).

The Quebecois cited these facts in explaining their conclusion: “… the knowledge gathered in recent years holds out a hope for prevention and suggests that the elderly and people bearing a genetic risk for Alzheimer’s disease should at least avoid DHA deficiency.” (Calon F, Cole G)

Results of the few, mostly small and short-term clinical studies done to date do not show that fish or supplemental omega-3s improve behavior or test scores in Alzheimer’s or ARCD patients, once senility progresses past its earlier, milder stages.

The Canadians’ encouraging words echo ones from a Swedish team’s 2006 report on a clinical trial that showed reduced agitation among some Alzheimer’s patients who took omega-3 fish oil:

“Combined data from … epidemiologic [population-and-diet] studies point to preventive effects from long-term fish intake. Those results and the results from the present study support the idea that omega-3 fatty acids have a role in primary prevention of Alzheimer’s disease …” (Freund-Levi Y et al. 2006)

Australian scientists discovered at least one possible reason for omega 3s protective powers. Researchers at Melbourne’s Deakin University found that DHA – one of the two key omega-3s in fish fat – regulates the levels of zinc in brain cells (Suphioglu C et al. 2010).

Margaret Ackland, Ph.D., leads a group that studies the function of trace metals in human health, and identifies “molecular transporters” that control the movement of zinc and copper into and out of cells.

Professor Ackland and her colleagues set out to study the relationship – if any – between omega-3 DHA and zinc in the neurons (nerve cells) responsible for transmitting signals in the brain.

Ackland, told the Australian Associated Press, “We found that when the level of DHA in neuronal cells drops, the level of zinc rises. The higher levels of zinc can be toxic, resulting in cell death … a key feature of … Alzheimer’s.” (Rose D 2010)

She went on to make a key observation: “We believe that having omega-3 fatty acids in the diet helps keep the levels of zinc in the brain in balance and helps prevent the increase in levels that triggers cell death.” (Rose D 2010)

Science has known for some time that DHA is essential for healthy brain function, but they didn’t know, until Professor Auckland’s study strongly demonstrated that there was a link to zinc.

Auckland stated, “To the best of our knowledge this is the first time a direct link has been demonstrated between the levels of DHA and zinc in the brain’s neuronal cells. Our work provides insights into how fatty acid nutrition may prevent the development of Alzheimer’s …” (Rose D 2010)

The last medical professional I took my child to was a young mother, expecting her second child. “You have such an advantage over other mom’s” I said. “You probably don’t worry over every little thing with yours like the rest of us do.”

“Yes and no”, she answered.
“It is still worrisome. I know that antibiotics are not the cure all people think they are, and I don’t believe in getting my child an antibiotic for everything. So we end up taking care of most things at home, and there is still worry!”

Having researched the subject of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance, her view on them didn’t surprise me. Antibiotic overuse is becoming a real problem and medical science is growing concerned because they are finding that bacterias are learning how to mutate to make themselves immune to antibiotic treatment (also known as antibiotic resistance). The following information comes from an article by the American College of Physicians.

“Antibiotic resistance is a worldwide public health problem that continues to grow. It occurs when strains of bacteria in the human body become resistant to antibiotics due to improper use and abuse of antibiotics.

Despite information like this, antibiotic overuse is still happening. Dr’s know antibiotics are not a cure all, and that misusing them can be dangerous, so why is it taking the average American so long to believe this?

I cannot count anymore the number of people I have heard make the comment that their doctor didn’t want to prescribe them (or their child) an antibiotic, but they told him “……………….” and so he caved.  The  above article by the American College of Physicians went on to say that more the 133 million courses of antibiotics are prescribed to non-hospitalized patients by doctors each year, and that an estimated 50 percent of them are unnecessary. The main reason they are prescribed unnecessarily  is because patients insist on them.

The following quote comes from the popular online pediatrician, Dr. Greene:

“Recognizing the urgent problem of antibiotic overuse, in 1998 the Centers for Disease Control and the Academy of Pediatrics have issued guidelines for when to use (and when not to use) antibiotics for the most common pediatric respiratory infections (Pediatrics 1998; 101:163–184). Ear infections, sinus infections, bronchitis, sore throats, and colds account for three fourths of all antibiotic prescriptions. These guidelines should not be rigidly adhered to for every child, but they do give a good general idea of when to avoid antibiotics.”

I believe a deeper, and emotional answer to why antibiotic overuse is still occurring lies here; People don’t like being sick and they don’t like riding a sickness out, they especially don’t like worrying over their sick children (all understandable, who does)?

In addition to this, people don’t truly know how to effectively nourish theirs or their children’s bodies back to health and lastly, they want good health right now, they don’t want to have to wait for it.

Facts of life,

  • People will get sick.
  • Children need to get sick.
  • If children are not allowed to get sick and fight sickness, their immune systems will not mature.
  • When dealing with sicknesses, hard work is involved in nourishing the body back to health-doing this effectively will mean time off work
  • The doctor is right when they tell you that hydration is a very important key.
  • A host of childhood hospitalizations are due to de-hydration.
  • There are other options to antibiotics
  • Antibiotics can do more harm then good (read the devastating affect of antibiotics on this young man’s life in Patient Heal Thyself by Jordan Rubin, and this startling article by Scientific American and this definition of Antibiotic Resistance on Wikipedia)
  • Medical science is becoming concerned that if antibiotic resistance continues to increase that eventually they won’t be able to keep up with the bacteria “super bugs”

In conclusion, parenthood is worrisome. An antibiotic is not going to make that go away, and you may be exposing your child to more risk by insisting your doctor prescribe them one. If you would like to know more about some simple steps you can take to help yourself and your family naturally, then

Antibiotic overuse is becoming a real problem. If you have already read my article, Antibiotics and Children, then you know that Medical science is growing concerned because they are finding that bacterias are smart, and that they are learning how to mutate to make themselves immune to antibiotic treatment (also known as antibiotic resistance). The following information comes from an article by the American College of Physicians.

“Antibiotic resistance is a worldwide public health problem that continues to grow. It occurs when strains of bacteria in the human body become resistant to antibiotics due to improper use and abuse of antibiotics.

The article went on to say that more the 133 million courses of antibiotics are prescribed to non-hospitalized patients by doctors each year, and that an estimated 50 percent of them are unnecessary. The main reason they are prescribed unnecessarily is because patients insist on them. This is what I like to call, playing with fire. In other words, what will we do when the bad bugs become too smart for medical science?

So, what do you do when the doctor will not prescribe you an antibiotic? First of all, there are many things you can do to nourish your body as means of prevention before you even get sick. Should you get sick, having taken care of your body before hand means you are more likely to bounce back quicker. However, if you are already sick, the 5 tips below are not only some things you can do to nourish the body and immune system, but they can even be useful in reducing symptoms for some who are already sick.

  1. Take Probiotics. This is perhaps the single most important thing you can do, and it is especially important if you must take an antibiotic! Why? Have you ever noticed how many times people continue to catch bad bugs after their antibiotic treatments? This is because the antibiotic wipes out the natural, good bacteria that protects us from bad bacterias. Supplementing with heavy doses of probiotics after antibiotic treatments is beneficial in repopulating the digestive system with healthy bacteria. I was recently informed that some antibiotics are beginning to come with a type of probiotic for people to follow up with, however our family loves Young Livings Life 5 purchased here. According to the product fact sheet on Life 5 it provides “Improved immunity: Probiotics, especially the super strain (LA-14), have been shown to be a tremendous support to immune function.*” A good probiotic should have over 1 billion live cultures, otherwise you should look for a different one (good ones appear expensive at first glance, but they beat the alternative). Young Livings Life 5 has “8 billion active cultures and improves colonization up to 10 times.” Read more on Life 5 here.
  2. Vitamin D-3. No doubt, you have heard about Vitamin D-3 this year. Studies have been published even in local newspapers about how most people are deficient in it, and how dangerous this deficiency is, especially for children. According to Wikipedia, it is beneficial for many things, including modulating normal, immune system function.
  3. Thieves! Thieves is an invaluable Young Living blend of highly antiviral, antiseptic, antibacterial, and anti-infectious essential oils and has been clinically tested to kill airborne microorganisms. Further testing found that the longer Thieves was diffused into the air, the stronger it became, and although the bad bugs try to mutate it does them no good (1). Young Living provides a line of Thieves products (purchased here), including Inner Defense, Thieves lozenges, Household Cleaner and more. For children, Thieves Lozenges available from Young Living are phenomenal! They are chewable, and they are safe, but I will warn you, your children will want to eat them like candy so keep them up where they cannot get them! Products like Inner Defense (pills containing Thieves) are wonderful for supporting normal immune function, however the bottle says to seek a professional’s guidance on using this product on children (mine says it is okay for my children). I will say, the Thieves essential oil blend is one of the most used products in our home! More then once have sore throat symptoms disappeared after taking just one drop!
  4. Eat Healthy. The more you can cut sugar out of the diet during the sick seasons and replace it with healthy snacks like fruit, the better off you will be. Sugar has been proven to depress the immune system (2).
  5. Keep hydrated. It takes patience, and work, but even children can be taught to stay hydrated during a cold/flu.
