"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who'll decide where to go." ~ Dr. Seuss

When I began using essential oils over twenty years ago I noticed two things, 1) the mold in my bathroom disappeared, and 2) we stopped getting sick. At the time I had no idea why these two things occurred, all I knew is that they did and it was in direct response to me bringing essential oils into my home and using them to make homemade cleaners and air fresheners.

I’ve learned a lot about essential oils since then and the thing that I have found most interesting is they are absolutely responsible for addressing things that realate to ‘unwanted’ germs and bacteria, both in my home and in my body. Since realizing the powers and effectiveness I have not and will never go back to using anything else, ever.

I was just reading an article (Study: Plant Oils Highly Effective Against Drug-Resistant Bacteria), science is catching up to what humans have known since humankind began, that the plants containing essential oils (not all plants have essential oils for us to distill) are extremely effective and because they are complex they do not produce bacteria that will grow resistance to their usage.

The article states that the study found”…

“…researchers at the Technological Educational Institute of Ionian Islands in Greece have found that plant oils are a powerful weapon against multi-drug-resistant staphylococcus aureas or MRSA, a bacterium that causes hospital-acquired infections and is dangerous because it frequently does not respond to a range of antibiotics.

Effemia Eriotou is a professor at the Institute in charge of the research project involving plant oils to treat multi-drug-resistant staphylococcus aureas. “We didn’t know that essential oils were going to have that a great anti-microbial activity.  And it’s really amazing that they are killing all these bacteria and yeasts as well,” Eriotou said.

Eriotou says scientists don’t know why essential oils, particularly oil from thyme, are so effective against drug- resistant staph.  It’s possible, according to Eriotou, that the oils are made by plants to protect them from disease.

…The research on essential oils was presented this week at the Society for General Microbiology meeting in Edinburgh, Scotland.”

Sue Chou did a study several years ago on 91 Young Living Essential Oils and discovered there were many which performed well at killing MRSA. The top two are Lemongrass and a blend called R.C. Both out performed Thyme. Here is the article I wrote on that study, Essential Oils and MRSA (Staph Infection) a Study.

What people need to realize too is that all essential oils are not created equal. It is ONLY the therapeutic-grade essential oils that make a difference and produce results. Fact, only 2 percent of all essential oils distilled in the entire world are therapeutic-grade, Young Living does make up most of that 2 percent. So, do not expect to get favorable results from most essential oils on the market.

"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who'll decide where to go." ~ Dr. Seuss

Excerpted from one of our most valuable resouces for using Young Living Essential Oils, the Essential Oils Desk Reference

Today, we live in a society of emotional turmoil.  There is more focus on emotional behavior and psychological conditions of the body now than at any time in our history. Many doctors are recognizing the possibility that a number of diseases are caused by emotional problems that link back to infancy or even to problems that occurred during conception or while in the womb. These emotional problems may have compromised the immune system or genetic structuring, causing children to become allergic to something that the mother ingested while pregnant.

Essential oils play an important role in assisting people in getting beyond these emotional barriers.  The aldehydes and esters of certain essential oils are very calming and sedating to the central nervous system (which consists of both the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems). These substances allow us to relax instead of letting anxiety build up in our body. Anxiety creates an acidic condition that activates the transcript enzyme that transcribes that emotion on the RNA template (RNA is the sister molecule of DNA) and stores it in the DNA. That emotion then becomes a predominant factor in our lives from that moment on.

When we have an emotional situation come up, instead of being overwhelmed by it, we can diffuse the oils, put them in our bath, or wear them as cologne. The oil molecules will absorb into the bloodstream from the nasal and buccal cavity to the limbic system [more on olfactory]. They will activate the amygdala (the memory center for fear and trauma) and sedate and relax the sympathetic/parasympathetic system. The oils help support the body in minimizing the acid that is created so that it does not create a reaction with the transcript enzyme.

Because essential oils affect the amygdala and pineal gland in the brain, they can help the mind and body by releasing emotional traumas and sharpening focus.

Essential oils provide assistance with staying centered in our goals. People have many distractions in today’s fast-paced world. For example, if you are struggling to retain or remember information, breathing the essential oils of peppermint, or rosemary stimulate the brain and memory functions for better focus and concentration.  Someone who is focusing on creating a business but finds other problems that interfere with that focus, could breathe the essential oils of galbanum, frankincense, sandalwood and/or melissa. These oils are extremely beneficial in enabling a person to bring his or her mind into a center of focus. The blend Gathering will also bring focus to people’s minds. For emotional clearing and release, the essential oil blend Trauma Life is especially helpful.

"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who'll decide where to go." ~ Dr. Seuss

    1. If you want to add extra flavor and authenticity to your meals holiday-seasonal-thanksgivingthat will have the family talking about your gourmet skills for years to come, ditch the dry spices and use essential spice oils instead! Just be sure to use only therapeutic grade as they are the only kind safe for internal or food use. There are therapeutic grade oils including Mountain Savory, Thyme, Oregano, Sage, Nutmeg, and more available from Young Living. I can testify, they make all the difference in the world when it comes to a superior dish. Young Livings Cookbook Volume 1 and Volume 2 would be smart to have for delicious, healthy, essential oil infused recipe ideas! Be careful not to get too much of the spicier oils in your recipe such as oregano and thyme because they can ruin a dish if too much is put in, so always err on the lesser side to begin with. For these it is best to tilt the bottle of oil, and just as the drop begins to form take the back of a spoon and touch it to the drop so you only get around half a drop. Another way is to take a toothpick, dip it in the oil, drop the toothpick into the dish and stir it in. Just be sure not to use colored toothpicks and be sure to take it out before serving!
    2. Did you know you can freshen and purify the air by diffusing oils such as Thieves, Christmas Spirit, Purification and R.C? These blends contain oils that have been clinically tested to purify the air and kill  specific unwanted microbes, (i.e. it’s not a happy Thanksgiving or Merry Christmas if you or someone else in the home is getting sick)!
    3. If you are the host, make your own aromatherapy bed linen mist for your overnight guests beds and bedrooms. If you are a guest you can simply make and bring your own, and perhaps make some extra to give your host as a gift.  Simply purchase a 2 oz mister bottle at a drug store and add 1 ounce pure water, and one ounce pure grain alcohol (like Everclear) or else 90 proof vodka (don’t water 90 proof down though) and add 20 drops of a calming and soothing oil such as Peace and Calming, Lavender, Release or Present Time.
    4. Going to be around a difficult family member for the holidays? Aromatherapy can directly impact the brain through olfactory system and have positive effects on mood (Learn more here). Frankincense, Peace and Calming, Release, Joy, and the roll-on Tranquil may be helpful! The Essential Oils Desk Reference (well worth the money) has many suggestions for mood disorders, from agitation (Joy, Valor, Peace and Calming), argumentativeness (Peace and Calming, Joy, joy-holiday-seasonalHarmony, Valor), depression (Hope, Joy, Valor) , irritability (Valor, Hope, Peace and Calming), obsessiveness (Valor, Forgiveness, Humility, Surrender), resentment (Forgiveness, Harmony, Joy), and more! Feel free to email me for more suggestions! These oils can be worn as perfume, on a pendant, given as a gift to the difficult one, or diffused into the air.
    5. Put Thieves Foaming Hand Wash at sinks for you and guests to use. Thieves has been clinically tested as antiviral, antiseptic and antibacterial. This hand wash is natural, safe, and non-toxic.
    6. Put a couple drops of Orange Oil (only therapeutic grade is safe internally of course) in you cranberry sauce for an extra kick and flavor! For some additional delight that will have guests buzzing with curiosity, stir in a couple ounces of NingXia Red as a secret ingredient after the sauce cools.
    7. Keep Di-Gize or Digest and Cleanse and Peppermint on hand as well as some some enzymes such as Essentialzyme. All four of these may be helpful in aiding digestion in case someone eats too much! And enzymes help to digest food, which in turn could mean less collection around the waist over the holidays!
    8. If you are hosting the holiday at your home, some Stress Away with its warm vanilla, lime, copaiba, and other pure essential oils was designed to melt stress! The Relax Essential Oil Mini Collection may be beneficial for you too. Clarity Blend or Highest Potential would also be pleasant oils to have that may help you stay sharp. Some delicious NingXia Red may also help you stay energized.
    9. Although I do not advocate drinking too much, essential oils can even be beneficial for a hangover according to Associated Content. They say that Peppermint or Coriander under the nose may be helpful in alleviating nausea, frankincense placed over the liver area may be helpful in getting rid of the sweats, grapefruit may uplift the spirits, and Marjoram may be helpful for headaches when placed behind the ears. Young Livings M-Grain may also be beneficial for headaches.
    10. Got the kind of kids coming over that tend to dominate the show? See if it is okay with their parents if you put a couple drops of Lavender or Peace and Calming in their little palms, have them rub their hands together, and inhale the oils. Another blend you could try is the Tranquil Roll-On, the children could apply this themselves without waisting one drop (I don’t know how many times my little ones have found this harmless blend when I wasn’t looking and put it all over their bodies, and yet I still have 3/4 of a bottle left). Children love these roll-on’s!Related Article;

fruit-cooking-foodFermenting vegetables (like sauerkraut)  used to be common practice, and necessary too as this provided people a way of preserving foods before refrigerators came to be. Interestingly enough, fermented foods had more healthful benefit than just simply being part of a meal. Fermented foods that have not been heated can contain billions of probiotics as well as life enhancing enzymes. Probiotics are good/or “friendly” bacteria that kill off bad bacteria. Many studies have found that so many problems start with a bad bacteria overgrowth in the intestines, such as candida, which in time can spread throughout the body. New studies are even linking a specific bad bacteria in the colon with obesity. Naturopaths teach that a person is only as healthy as their digestive system is, and health authorities like Dr. Christopher and Bernard Jensen taught that 90% of disease begins in the colon. It is very important to keep a clean colon, but it is also important to provide the colon with good bacteria to help protect the body.

Young Livings Life 5 is an excellent probiotic that can help implant good bacteria into the colon, however it is a good practice to eat foods high in probiotics as well. Unsweetened yogurt is okay, but it isn’t likely to implant enough friendly bacteria into your colon. Kiefer, found near yogurt in grocery stores is better then yogurt (make sure it is unsweetened). Foods such as fermented vegetables are another excellent and delicious way to supply your body with probiotics. The key is that it must be raw, cooked/heated sauerkraut and vegetables have no probiotics in them because the heat kills the good bacterias. This means that making your own is ideal; especially considering it is easy, and far less expensive too!

Here is my favorite recipe for Kimchi-a Korean type sauerkraut/vegetable mix with my own personal favorite twists to it!

Shayla’s KimChi

2 heads cabbage, chopped fairly fine
2 carrots, sliced very thin or grated
1 small onion, chopped
2 cups chopped broccoli
1 drop Young Living oregano oil*
1 drop Young Living thyme oil*
1 drop Young Living ginger oil*
juice of 2 lemons
1 or 2 capsules of Life 5 (optional)
2 teaspoons salt (may need more to taste but be careful not to get too much in)
2-3 wide mouth quart jars with lids
*Note, Only Therapeutic Grade oils should ever be used internally as they are safe. See my article on Aromatherapy Labeling Fraud

Mix all ingredients well. Let sit for10 minutes and stir again.  Place one cup into a wide mouth jar and begin packing it down very firmly with your fist (make sure your hands are very, very clean). Try to get the juices to squish over the top of the vegetables and continue adding cupfuls. Stop when you have filled the jar to 1 1-2 inches from the top.  Continue with the remaining vegetables and jars.

There is likely to be remaining juice in the bottom of  the bowl once all the vegetables are packed, just pour this juice in with each of the jars.  Cover tightly, and place in a warm area (but not too warm- around 70-75 degrees F.)  for 3 to 5  days. Make sure to set them on a towel as they will leak juices. You will know they are done when the color goes from pale green to a pale yellow. Once they are done, place them in the refrigerator to stop the fermentation process and enjoy! Use KimChi within 2-3 months. A wonderful cookbook no home should be without is Nancy Fallon’s Nourishing Traditions. This cookbook has quite a few wonderful recipes for fermented vegetables.

With the seasons changing you may find you have some tomatoes that haven’t ripened yet in the garden – no worry – here’s a yummy recipe for those green tomatoes. cooking-oils

Fried Green Tomatoes with Thyme Essential Oil

6 large green tomatoes
1 tsp. paprika
1/2 cup blue or yellow cornmeal
1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper
1/4 tsp. sea salt
1 cup milk
1 TBS. fresh parsley, finely chopped
1 drop Young Living Thyme – or – Mountain Savory essential oil
olive oil

Mix all ingredients (except tomatoes, milk, and olive oil). Dip sliced tomatoes in milk. Coat with cornmeal mixture. Cook in a sauté pan with olive oil until tomatoes are crisp on the outside. Makes 6 servings.

Note: do NOT substitute other brands of essential oils for cooking or ingesting, they are unsafe for internal use due to improper processing and adulteration. Young Living Essential Oils are food grade and the edible plants they come from make them safe for cooking and flavoring food.

embellishment

Essential oils are potent. If you use just the bottle to drip them out you can only get 1 drop, but when it comes to cooking oftentimes you will find that 1 drop is too much. But how do you get less than one?

There are no kitchen tools that will accurately measure 1/4, 1/2, 2/3, etc of a drop so it really will come down to an art.

One of the ways to get less than a drop is to use a toothpick. However this will be very inaccurate because it will depend on how porous the toothpick is and how long you leave it in the recipe you are making. It can also be wasteful as the toothpick will retain some of the oil when you throw it away. Well, you can always pick your teeth with it.

A more accurate way to get closer to an exact amount is to tip the bottle slowly until the drop begins to form. When the drop is about the size you need or want, take a clean spoon and touch it to the “partial” drop. The spoon will then have what you need and you can stir it into your recipe.

Happy cooking and Bon Apetit!

The kitchen and bathroom are often a source of odors and bacteria. Use the following mixtures to freshen, deodorize, and disinfect the air, work areas, cupboards, bathroom fixtures, sinks, tiles, woodwork, carpets, door knobs, phones, keyboards, on toilets and around the base of smelly toilets, etc.

These blends are safe for the family and the environment, and smell oh so good!

The Young Living essential oils in these spray mixtures will also help eliminate germs and bacteria. Don’t expect to get these kinds of results with novelty aromatherapy oils found in health food stores.

Twenty years ago I became interested in essential oils because I was fed-up with spending a fortune on so-called natural household cleaners. I was determined to find nice smelling solutions that I could make myself for all of my household cleaning and as an air freshener. Young Living wasn’t in business twenty years ago so I had to buy my essential oils from another company, which were the best I could find at the time – they were not therapeutic-grade like Young Living’s so I could not use them topically or internally – still, I thought they were better than the ineffective natural cleaning products I was using.

I discovered Young Living oils in 1998 and as soon as my order arrived I compared my Young Living oils to the other brand I had been using – YUCK! I could not believe how disgusting the other brand of oils smelled. I threw out about $600 worth of essential oils that day, I just could not bring myself to use the inferior brand, not when I had the real deal in my hands… finally!

To this day I have not found any brand of essential oil that is more pure than my Young Living oils. I can use the Young Living oils in ways I had only dreamed – topically, internally, in cooking, as well as what got me into essential oils in the first place, for household cleaning and sanitizing.

I used Young Living oils for around 6 years before I decided to become a distributor four years ago. I just love these oils and the quality cannot be beat, their effectiveness is amazing.

The first recipe below is one of my all time favorites, I still use it even after all these years. I have found it to be superb at destroying odors and killing germs.

Tip: Since essential oils separate easily from water, always shake well and shake every so often as you use these mixtures. They will deodorize and clean the air, instead of covering or masking the odors.
