Our pets stress can become quite aggravated at the drop of a hat, literally.  If you have skittish critters, it does not take much for them to be stressed and get scared, and their poor little hearts can start pumping like crazy. Some are more skittish than others.  Wouldn’t you like to be able to help them out, so that they are calmer?

Young Living has many different therapeutic-grade essential oils that are calming and they are safe to use with pets.  This is because Young Living essential oils are quality oils, they are not perfume grade.  When you use essential oils for your self and your pets, you want to be sure that you know that the essential oil you are using is a quality essential oil. This is extremely important, especially when you use them for therapeutic purposes on your pets that you love so much.

Read more on essential oil quality

Three oils that are particularly great calming oils are:

  1. Lavender is a great aid for relaxing.
  2. Peace and Calming blend helps calm tensions, promoting relaxation and a deep sense of peace.
  3. RutaVala blend promotes relaxation of the body and mind. It helps ease tension and relieve stress.

It’s quite simple to use Young Living essential oils on our pets.  You know that first off, you have your quality oil with Young Living.   Young Living essential oils are very concentrated and powerful, so it is important to understand that less is better!

The easiest way to use Young Living essential oils with your pets is by diffusing them.  By diffusing the essential oil your pets, and you, are getting the aromatherapy by breathing in the essential oil that is being diffused.  The diffuser literally puts the essential oil into the air in micro-fine particles that stay suspended in the air for several hours.

Start by diffusing your Young Living essential oils for 15-30 minutes, one to four times a day for normal situations. Place the nebulizer diffuser higher in the room (a shelf, bar, or fireplace mantle are good choices) so that the essential oil mist has a longer distance to fall through the air.

Read more on diffusing

Essential oils can also be applied topically.  Remember less is better.  The amount of essential oil that is used would be determined by the size of your pet.

  • Small to medium sized pets, like cats or small/medium dogs:
  1. Take 1 drop of any of the above mentioned essential oils.
  2. Place it in the palm of your hand and rub your hands together until the essential oil is dry.
  3. Rub your pets paws and give them a nice loving petting.
  • Larger sized dogs
  1. Take 2 drop of any of the above mentioned essential oils.
  2. Place it in the palm of your hand and rub your hands together until the essential oil is dry.
  3. Rub your pets paws and give them a nice loving petting.

With either one of these therapies, diffusing or topical application you should see your pets becoming calmer.  They may begin to love it when you bring out the essential oils.  I know my pets love them and they have their favorites, just like I do.

We love our pets, and they love us, so why not help them to feel less stress by having Young Living essential oils on hand for them.  You can get your products delivered right to your door.  Young living has other pet products that are all natural, and if you are interested in learning more, please contact me.

Rose (Rosa damascena) has a beautiful, strong floral and sweet fragrance that is intoxicating and highly romantic and intoxicating and believed to be aphrodisiac. Rose essential oil helps bring balance and harmony with stimulating and uplifting properties that create a sense of well-being and self-confidence. Used for skin care for thousands of years, it is perfect for dry or aging skin.

The benefit of using a pure and true Rose essential oil is that it will provide aroma therapy benefits; whereas a lower quality or fragrance aromatherapy oil will provide nothing more than possibly a placebo affect. Therefore, it is always most advantageous to use the best available, I use and highly recommend Young Living Essential Oils.

Rose oil has the most diverse healing applications of any essential oil used in aromatherapy today. The oil is considered a supreme healer of both the body and soul. The energy of rose essential oil is said to have powerful effects on both the mind [olfactory] and heart [chakras], providing a state of overall well-being.

Each of the chakras has specific glands and organs it affects. It is believed that we can enhance the vitality of a chakra through exposing it to colors, sounds, minerals and essential oils.

The heart chakra is the center of compassion, love, group consciousness, and spiritually; associated with “oneness” with “all that is.”

A healthy heart chakra can allow us to experience love and compassion more fully, and provide a deep sense of peace and centeredness. Healing or stimulating the heart chakra can help to ease heart and chest conditions, such as; emotional issues (give and receive love), stress, anger and depression.

The alternative health applications of Rose essential oil are many. Exceptionally beneficial to the female reproductive organs as it is said to act as a tonic for the whole system. Young Living Rose essential oil can be diluted in an aromatherapy V-6 massage oil and massaged into the pelvic region for this effect; it is said to be both a regulating and purifying to both the body and mind.

The ‘Precious’ Rose Oil: how to buy it without breaking the bank

It takes approximately 60,000 Rosa damascena roses to produce just 1 oz. of rose essential oil. Or,  5000 pounds of roses to make 1 pound of true Rose Oil. Given these figures, it is no surprise that rose oil is the most precious essential oil.

Young Living Rose essential oil is so potent that you can extend it by mixing your own carrier oil (such as V-6) with it; in a separate jar or bottle, combine 1-4 drops of Rose essential oil with 1 tablespoon carrier oil.

The wholesale price of a 5ml bottle of Young Living Rose Oil (which has approximately 84 drops of Rose essential oil), will cost about $2.16 per drop. Therefore, it is highly recommended to become a wholesale customer so that you can save 24% off retail prices on all of your purchases. This is done by selecting the “Distributor” membership type when you place your order, the distributor and wholesale member types are combined for ease, you never have to have a business or sell anything if you simply wish to remain a wholesale customer, learn more about being a wholesale customer.

Gentle Baby Testimonial

“The 3,000 mile long drive across the country when I moved to North Carolina was hard on my body, particularly my legs. My feet, ankles and calves were very swollen from sitting in the car driving for a week. I tried a few different oils and the one that made the biggest difference was, oddly, Gentle Baby! It made the swelling go down and the discomfort ease – go figure!

Moral of the story – if one oil doesn’t work – try another, don’t limit your choices to what you think an oil may or not do… you just never really know.” ~ Evelyn Vincent

Valentines Day for lovers only? Do you feel left out because you are single and don’t have a partner? Are you lonely and yearn for the touch from a loving and caring person or kind thoughtful words to set your heart racing? If you are experiencing any of these emotions and feeling the picture is not going to change, at least perhaps not before Valentines Day, are you going to feel bad because of being without that someone special, or do you want to feel emotionally better and feel your ’self-love’, ’self-worth’, ’self-care’?

There are numerous reasons why many people are alone. From loss due to a death, divorce, or just not having ever met that Miss or Mister Right. It can be a very lonely feeling when one is in that space and especially at times like Valentines Day or other monumental times in our lives. You can complain about the unfairness of it all, remain bitter and unforgiving and not able to let go, that is a choice. Or you can change and overcome and transform those unhappy, unhealthy feelings for better ones. Forgiving someone does not condone what someone else did; it simply releases us from the pain of their actions. It all is a choice and a choice only you can make.

I was married, am now divorced and have been single for many years.  It was difficult a lot of the time, but there were several things that helped me to turn around and to feel better, and that helped to pull me up off the ground out of my darkest hours. I call them my five fixes.

My Five Fixes

  1. My Blessings: One way for me to feel better was to count my many blessings. This in itself got me back on track to feeling better, as I am blessed, and I know that many people are less fortunate.  One can always find good in a circumstance. Sometimes it may be hard to see it, but if you try hard, you can see that your life is better in some way, than someone elses.
  2. Gratitude: Gratitude in itself can improve your life. By simply focusing on what it is we are grateful for we can improve our lives in a big way. I have been starting and ending my day for many years, saying to myself and God, what I am grateful for. I truly believe I am even more blessed because of this.
  3. Make the call:  Call someone. For me this was a tough one, the first time being the toughest. When you are able to talk with someone, it makes  your loneliness more tolerable and you feel the caring from your friend or family member you spoke with.
  4. Journal: Daily writing my thoughts, my blessings, what I am grateful for, who I talked with, or how beautiful a day it was. It is very therapeutic to write. It does not have to be long, it could be just a few words, or you can write a chapter. Just be sure to write.
  5. Essential oils: This is by far a very amazing, rewarding and healing part of my continual life’s journey. I tend to start my day by applying and massaging Young Living essential oil blend of Joy onto the bottoms of my feet.  This keeps my mood uplifted throughout the day.

Alright then, soon it will be Valentines Day and many of us are single, so we need to focus on what will boost our spirits, make us happy, relaxed and loved.  Sometimes it may be hard to think of what will make us happy, so I’ve put together a few suggestions of what I would do.

  • Start my day by applying Rose oil to my pulse points and under my nose, so that I can smell the beautiful scent throughout the day.
  • Get a massage and take your favorite essential oil of choice. (Mine would be Peace and Calming, unless I had aching muscles, then it would be Balsam Fir or PanAway)
  • Go get a pedicure or manicure and once again take your favorite essential oil of choice to soak your feet and hands in. (Mine would be peppermint and lavender)
  • Go out to dinner with a friend or friends and then rent some movies or go to the movies.
  • Diffuse essential oil blend of Harmony to help me to feel emotionally balanced, calm and open to new possibilities and an overall feeling of well-being.

For some this may be too boring, but I am a simple gal leading a pretty calm, simplistic life, so it works for me.  My main focus and passion that keeps my life upbeat and healthy is the fact that Young Living essential oils have been in my life since 1996 and I know that my Valentines Day will be brighter, happier and filled with loving feelings because I surround my self with our quality oils. If you would like to learn more about Young Living essential oils, I would enjoy hearing from you, please contact me so that I can help you to get started with the right choice of essential oils to help you too to have a more fulfilled Valentines Day.

Therapeutic grapefruit essential oil has a lovely scent, great taste, and many benefits. In this article Dr. David Stewart writes about the origins of this amazing fruit and how to use grapefruit essential oil. Young Living grapefruit essential oil is therapeutic-grade, food-grade (for cooking and ingesting as a dietary supplement), and can be used in a diffuser or applied topically. The versatility of a high quality essential oil is priceless and particularly useful for today’s men and women who seek lifestyles that are more natural and bring wellness benefits.

Grapefruit the Great Fruit

by David Stewart, Ph.D., R.A., D.N.M.

The Latin name for grapefruit is Citrus paradisi , which means, Fruit of Paradise. There were no Grapefruit trees in the Garden of Eden, but considering the many virtues of the fruit, maybe they should have been there.

Grapefruit (also known as pomelo) is a hybrid, a fruit-bearing tree created by the union of Citrus sinensis and Citrus maxima (also called Citrus grandis). The first of these (C. sinensis) is the common sweet orange. The second (C. maxima or grandis) is a large some-what sour fruit called the pummelo that is closely related to the lemon.

The odd name for this rather large ungrapelike fruit seems to originate from the fact that grapefruits grow in clusters of 12-24, like huge bunches of grapes. At least, that is the theory held by most botanists. Other authorities say that to them the taste of grapefruit is very much like the taste of grapes and, thus, could be another possible source for the name. Personally I don’t find the taste of a grapefruit to be anything like that of a grape. So I favor the bunch theory for the name.

Where Did Grapefruits Come From?

Historians and botanists are not certain of the origin of this cross between species and do not know exactly why, how, and by whom such a marriage was ever made. It did not exist in ancient times. The best guess is that it originated in Jamaica some time after Columbus landed in the West Indies in 1492, although some argue that it originated in the islands of southeastern Asia where pummelo trees are indigenous and common. One thing is certain: the versatility and benefits of grapefruit truly are amazing.

Grapefruit has long been considered a helpful food for weight loss. It is a refreshing, satisfying snack one can enjoy with no concern over calories. Grapefruit oil can also be used as an appetite suppressant, when mixed with drinking water, put on the tongue, or simply inhaled. Grapefruit oil also dissolves fat and has been used to address cellulite.

It is also said to help with acne, digestion, fluid retention, and disorders of the liver, kidneys, vascular, and lymphatic systems. It has also been used to assist in drug withdrawal.

Its fragrance is mood elevating and has been used as an anti-depressant. It has also been applied for migraine headaches, pre-menstrual tension, fatigue, and jet lag.

Five Drops in an Olympic Pool

One of the amazing facts about the fragrance of grapefruit oil is that the distinctly characteristic aroma that identifies and sets grapefruit oil apart from all other citrus oils is from a trace compound. All citrus oils are composed mostly of the same compound, a monoterpene called d-limonene. It is d-limonene that gives they all the common smell of citrus. Yet it is not difficult to distinguish fragrances between orange, lemon, lime, tangerine, mandarin, and grapefruit oils. The differences are in their minor and trace compounds.

Grapefruit oil is over 90% d-limonene, but it contains something not found in any other citrus oil. It is a sulfur compound, whose strange name is 1-p-menthen-8-thiol, that dominates the smell of grapefruit. Without it, grapefruit would not smell like grapefruit. Yet, this compound comprises only one part per billion of the whole oil. That is equivalent to less than five drops in an olympic swimming pool. It would take highly sophisticated laboratory analysis equipment to detect such a tiny amount of a compound in an oil, yet your nose is sensitive enough to instantly detect this trace ingredient and your body makes use of it in receiving the therapeutic benefits unique to grapefruit.

Importance of Retaining Trace Compounds in an Oil

This is yet another example of why only therapeutic grade oils, which retain all of the trace compounds, should be used for healing purposes. Food and perfume grade oil companies care only about compounds in an oil that provide taste and odor [more on quality]. Therefore, such producers do not exert the extra effort to preserve minor or trace components unless they contribute to taste or smell. The healing properties of an oil almost always involve the minor and trace compounds, which do not always contribute to taste or fragrance, but are essential for therapeutic action.

The fact that a trace compound like 1-p-menthen-8-thiol can be detected in a grapefruit by the human nose, when present in such a minute concentration as 1 ppb, is proof that our bodies do sense, interact, and utilize the trace compounds in an oil that must be there for the healing properties of an oil to remain complete and intact.

The Smell of Feminine Youthfulness

Recent data have discovered yet another attribute of the multifaceted fragrance and properties of grapefruit.

A study of smells shows that the scent of grapefruit on women make them seem younger to men, causing them to underestimate the age of women by an average of six years. However, the fragrance of grapefruit on men does nothing for them.

The study by the Smell and Taste Institute in Chicago explored the question of what makes a woman smell young. The smell of pink bubble gum made women smell young, but too young. The odor of bubble gum caused men to think of women in their childhoods as little girls, not as younger, yet mature in their womanhood.

Institute director, Alan Hirsch, said he smeared several middle-aged woman with broccoli, banana, spearmint leaves, and lavender but none of those scents made a difference to the men, including the floral fragrance of the lavender, which is often used in feminine perfumes.

However, the scent of grapefruit altered men’s perceptions. Hirsch said that when male volunteers were asked to write down the ages of women with a grapefruit odor, the age they perceived was considerably less than reality.

So there you have it, ladies. The fountain of youth may be in the aroma of grapefruit juice, at least for women. Men have been smearing colognes, after shave lotions, aromatic oils, and other manly potions on their bodies for thousands of years, in attempts to make themselves more attractive to the opposite sex. As yet, science has found no fragrance to make men seem younger than they really are.

The following article by David Stewart, PhD is right on target with what I know and feel on a problem that plagues us today, MRSA. When I read, or write aticles on illness, I feel even more grateful that I know about therapeutic-grade essential oils, such as Young Living Essential Oils, and how to use them; using them by the way is easy and extremely cost efficient when you consider the thousands, or hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on healthcare each and every year. The Essential Oils Desk Reference is the book most frequently used and recommended for Young Living Essential Oils. Thus, I am delighted to spend so little on ‘preventing’ illnesses such as MRSA; yikes, just one look at the pictures below is enough to make me be super-mindful. What’s that saying, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of a cure” – only thing is, there is no cure for MRSA and there isn’t likely to be one coming from allopathic medicine. Therefore, I feel… “my 15ml bottle of R.C. or Lemongrass could mean the difference between a life with MRSA, or not.” And, you better believe I used my oils when I was in the emergencyroom!

Here is the link to an article I wrote last September on the study David Stewart is referring to in his article Essential Oils and MRSA a Study, I also discuss in that article what I did last spring when I went into the emergency room – I’m not going to take any chances!

Are Essential Oils a Cure for Monster Bacteria like MRSA?

by David Stewart, PhD

MRSA (pronounced “murr – sa”) is an acronym for “Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus.” While Staphylococcus aureus is a common and relatively harmless inhabitant in the nasal passages of 25-30% of people, the MRSA form of staphylococcus is not so benign and once entrenched it does not go away. MRSA is a monster bacteria created by the medical use of man-made antibiotics and antibacterial agents employed principally in hospitals. It was first detected in the 1960s, only a few years after a new semi-synthetic form of penicillin (Methicillin) was introduced.

Hospitals are where this germ originated and is still where it is principally found. However, since 1982 MRSA has been found outside of hospitals, first detected among drug users in Detroit. Since then it has worked its way into other parts of the community, including playgrounds and gymnasiums. Thus, we not only have HA-MRSA or “Hospital Acquired MRSA” but also CA-MRSA or “Community Acquired MRSA.”

The portion of staphylococcal infections in the U.S. due to MRSA has risen steadily at an ever-increasing rate from 2% in 1974 to 63% in 2004. Once MRSA has been acquired, it is usually remains with the infected individual for life and can be fatal. Medical science has no effective treatment for MRSA infections.

A Relative Contracts MRSA

As a case in point, I have a relative, a retired career military man, who accompanied his wife to a hospital for some routine tests for her (not him). He had a small open scratch on his leg. During his visit, he acquired HA-MRSA through that small scratch. His leg swelled up and became inflamed. To date, no treatment has worked in stopping the spread of the bacteria in his body. It has now infected his entire leg and has worked up into his groin. He has been hospitalized more than once for treatments, all of which have been ineffective. It has been five years since his fateful visit to the hospital with his wife and he still carries the infection, which is slowly spreading.

I mentioned the possibility of essential oils to him, but he is a relative of mine and, as many of you have experienced, we have no credibility with our relatives. (Mark 6:4) He is also a devout believer in allopathic medicine. Having a Cadillac insurance program from being a veteran, he is content to keep receiving free medical treatment, even though it is not working. Unless he eventually resorts to a non-allopathic solution, he will most likely suffer from this infection for the rest of his life and, perhaps, even succumb to it.

Will Medical Science Find a Solution to MRSA?

Since the pharmaceutical approach to resistant strains of bacteria is to develop stronger and stronger antibiotics, there a pharmaceutical solution is not likely to ever be found because any antibiotic stronger than Methicillin would be more likely to kill the patient than the bacteria. Vancomycin is another antibiotic nearly equal in potency to Methicillin, but it, like Methicillin, can also be lethal to the patient and has not been found effective against MRSA.

Since it was the plethora of man-made antibiotics and antibacterial agents employed since the 1950’s that were the creators of MRSA and other resistant strains of bacteria in the first place, it is not likely that any medicine synthesized in a laboratory will ever be a solution. In fact, additional more powerful man-made drugs would most likely result in giving birth to even more virulent microorganisms. MRSA is a Frankenstein of the Medical System’s own creation. The solution to MRSA must come from outside the medical paradigm.

Are Essential Oils Effective Against MRSA?

Since Modern Medicine has no cure for MRSA and is, in fact, the cause of MRSA, the most likely means to combat MRSA is essential oils, which are among the most versatile and effective antimicrobial agents known. Not only do essential oils have powerful antibacterial properties without side effects, they are also incapable of producing resistant strains of bacteria as synthetic pharmaceuticals do.

There are two reasons essential oils do not and cannot create resistant strains of bacteria:

(1) Essential oils are extremely complex, comprised of hundreds of compounds, while laboratory-produced medicines are simple, usually consisting of only one or two active ingredients. Thus, bacteria have less difficulty in breaking the codes of a man-made medicine than in attempting to form a resistance to a natural medicine like an essential oil.

(2) Furthermore, essential oils are never twice the same while every batch of a pharmaceutical drug is always the same, reproduced with laboratory exactness. Hence, with repeated exposure to the same identical drug, bacteria eventually figure out its toxic properties and develope resistance. However, since essential oils are never identical from year to year, even if bacteria did figure out an oil’s effective components in a given year, they would have to start all over with the next crop.

The reason essential oils are not exactly duplicatible is because they are products of the vagaries of nature. The essential oils of a plant vary to adjust to their environment, just as human blood adjusts from morning to evening, from season to season, and from climate to climate. A plant’s oils are actually different from morning to night each day and from week to week throughout the growing season. Furthermore, the growing environment for a plant is never the same year to year. Some years are warmer than others, some cooler, some with more rain, some less, and if you compare the same species grown in different latitudes, altitudes, climates, and soils, you get even greater variations.

A basil plant will always produce a basil oil with the same suite of compounds, but from year to year and place to place, the relative proportions of the hundreds of compounds comprising basil oil will be different. Essential oils are like fine wines. Since no two years are the same, neither are two year’s wines the same even from the same vinyard. That is why vintners put dates on their bottles, since each year’s wine will a little different in taste, color, and fragrance.

Therefore bacteria will never figure out nor become resistant to an essential oil because they are too complex and because they are always changing. Man-made medicines are temporary, but God’s medicines are forever. Hospitals used to use the Oil of Onycha (Styrax benzoin) [Onycha is found in the "Tweleve Oils of the Ancient Scripture" collection through my product website, it is not sold individually] dissolved in alcohol (called Tincture of Benzoin) as their most effective antiseptic and antibacterial agent to cleanse and sanitize their wards.

If hospitals and medical doctors would have continued to use natural agents like Onycha, we would not have resistant strains of bacteria, such as MRSA, to threaten us today.

The Versatility of R.C. [essential oil]

R.C. Essential Oil Blend has been applied successfully for pneumonia, for dissolving calcium deposits in joints, and to stop snoring, lthough its primary purpose was to relieve “Respiratory Congestion.” That is what the initials, “R.C.,” stand for. RC has been effective with many forms of congestion including colds, bronchitis, sore throats, sinusitis, coughs, lung infections, and respiratory allergy symptoms.

However, in a series of laboratory tests at the Young Living Laboratory and Weber State University in Utah (See citation below, see my article on the study here), of 91 single essential oils and 64 essential oil blends, while Lemongrass was found to be the most effective single oil, R.C. was found to be the most effective blend.

Seventy-eight of the 91 single oils tested showed measurable inhibitory activity against MRSA. The top ranking oils, in descending order of effectiveness, were Lemongrass (Cymbopogen flexuosus) [article on lemongrass], Lemon Myrtle (Backhousia citriodora), Mountain Savory (Satureja montana), Cinnamon Bark (Cinnamomum verum), and Melissa (Melissa officinalis). The most effective single oil, Lemongrass, completely inhibited all MRSA growth on the test plate.

Since Tincture of Benzoin (containing Oil of Onycha) used to be the principal antibacterial cleansing agent used in hospitals, as mentioned above, it would be interesting to see how Onycha measures up in killing the MRSA bacteria. Unfortunately, this study of 91 single oils did not include Onycha.

Fifty-two of the 64 blends tested showed measurable inhibitory activity against MRSA. The top three ranking oils, in descending order of effectiveness, were R.C., Motivation, and Longevity. The most effective blend, R.C., also completely inhibited all MRSA growth on the test plate.

R.C. is a blend of 10 species, including three species of Eucalyptus, as follows: E. globulus, E. radiata, E. citriodora [article on the types of Eucalyptus], Myrtle (Myrtus communis, not Lemon myrtle), Pine, Spruce, Marjoram, Lavender [tips and testimonials], Cypress, and Peppermint. The Power of R.C. in combating MRSA is far beyond any of its individual constituents. In fact, two of the constituent oils (E. globulus and Myrtle) both scored zero in their ability to inhibit MRSA growth. Meanwhile, the effectiveness of R.C. as a blend was almost triples the effectiveness of the most powerful ingredient, which was Peppermint oil. This finding dramatically illustrates the power of oil blends over many oil singles. An oil blend usually has capabilities not manifested by any of its components, which is why blends are preferred by most aromatherapists for healing applications.

The same was true of Motivation, the second most effective blend. Motivation contains only four single oils: Roman Chamomile, Spruce, Ylang Ylang, and Lavender. Ylang Ylang, alone, had no inhibitory effect on MRSA whatsoever while the other three ingredients all scored less than half as effective as the combination of all four. Thus, the power of Motivation against MRSA was found to be greater than that of any of the individual species comprising the blend.

It is also interesting to note that the three most effective blends (R.C., Motivation, and Longevity) contained none of the five most effective single oils (Lemongrass, Lemon Myrtle, Mountain Savory, Cinnamon Bark [Cinnamon bark: does yours bark and benefit?], Melissa).

Can the Whole be Deduced from its Parts?

The conclusion is that one cannot deduce the properties of an oil blend from a knowledge of its components. Additional properties will always manifest in a blend that are not demonstrated by any of the singles that comprise it, while many properties of the singles do not manifest in the blend. This is why effective blends must be formulated intuitively and not by logic. All of Young Living’s blends were formulated by Gary Young, all by intuition, some even by way of intuitive dreams.

The same principle is true of single oils in that one cannot deduce the properties of an essential oil by knowing the properties of its individual compounds as isolates. Attempting to do so would be like trying to deduce the taste and texture of a chocolate cake from the taste and textures of the individual ingredients, viz. white flour, shortening, sugar, salt, eggs, baking powder, bitter cocoa, and vanilla extract. This is why scientific studies on the properties of isolated single compounds of an oil do not reveal the nature of the oil and why knowledge of a single oil does not reveal the nature of a blend containing that oil.

This principle is true even to the extent that a compound that is highly toxic alone can be safe, non-toxic, and therapeutic when occurring as an ingredient in an essential oil. Many aromatherapists who fear certain oils have been trained in a school that teaches the fallacy that properties of isolated compounds studied in laboratories apply to the natural oils in which they are found. Thus, many aromatherapists avoid perfectly safe and therapeutically effective oils because a laboratory has found one or more compounds in the oil that, by themselves, are harmful.

It is this fallacy upon which many aromatheray books post lists of “forbidden oils, never to be used in aromatherapy for any purpose.” These taboo lists include perfectly good oils like cinnamon, clove, basil, oregano, mountain savory, birch, wintergreen, cassia, tansy, pine, and even benign oils like vanilla. Of course, adulterated oils improperly distilled and grown with chemicals and insecticides can possess toxic properties. However, if one uses only Young Living oils, which are pure, unadulterated, properly grown, and properly distilled, one need not worry about toxicity.

It is interesting to note that Thieves Blend, which is a favorite antimicrobial blend that has been shown to be effective against a variety of bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi, is not particularly effective against MRSA. In fact, it is less than half as effective as R.C. This is surprising since Thieves contains Cinnamon Bark oil, which is one of the top three effective singles against MRSA. Yet Thieves, as a blend, was only about half as effective as Cinnamon Bark oil alone.

Practical Implications

The data cited here were all done in vitro in a laboratory on cultures of MRSA on test plates. While most of the oils tested are considered by the FDA as “GRAS” (Generally Regarded as Safe) for oral ingestion, no essential oil has been approved by the FDA for human use to treat a disease. The data definitely show promise for the possible treatment or prevention of MRSA infections, more promise than anything medical science has been able to find thus far. Furthermore, applying Lemongrass or R.C. has no negative side effects like antibiotics and no toxicities to humans like synthetic antibacterial agents.

So how can you make practical use of the research cited above? For one thing, if you are going to visit a hospital or spend time in a hospital, cover the soles of your feet with R.C. or Lemongrass. Rub one or both of these oil on your hands as an “antimicrobial oil glove” so that when you touch doorknobs, hospital furniture, elevator buttons, or public telephones, there will be a thin oil barrier between you and any possible MRSA contamination. MRSA is primarily spread by contact and not as an airborne pathogen. You might exercise the same precautions as in a hospital visit when visiting a public gymnasium where you are sharing workout equipment with strangers. Then when you go home, diffuse R.C. or Lemongrass, scrub your hands, and face with soap to minimize any exposure you may have had with invisible MRSA microbes.

Better to avoid going into a hospital altogether, if possible. Hospital personnel and pastors who regularly visit hospitals are at particular risk, not only to themselves, but also to their families since they can potentially carry MRSA into their homes.

If you do acquire a MRSA infection, realize that the medical profession can do little, if anything, to help you. However, you can safely apply R.C. or Lemongrass locally at the site of the infection and in any other way deemed advisable, even internally. Additional research is going to be required to determine the extent to which essential oils can prevent and/or cure MRSA infections in humans. At this time, Lemongrass and R.C. have demonstrated the greatest promise of all possibilities in combating the spread of MRSA and of bringing relief to those who have already contracted it.

Personally, if I were to be diagnosed with a MRSA infection circulating in my body, I would head for Gary Young’s clinic in Ecuador where essential oils can be administered intravenously. This is the only place in the world where essential oils are administered directly into the blood stream. I would request an I.V. containing a suspension of R.C. and/or Lemongrass oil. The clinic routinely administers oils such as Frankincense, Helichrysum, and Thieves intravenously, but to my knowledge an R.C.I.V. has never been administered to date. But if my system was found infected with MRSA, I would be willing to be the first to receive one.

Thanks to the Researchers

The scientific data cited in this article are published in an article entitled, Inhibition of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) by Essential Oils in the Flavour and Fragrance Journal, 23:444-449, (2008). This journal is published by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The research was carried out, compiled, and reported by Sue Chao, Gary Young, Craig Oberg, and Karen Nakaoka as a collaborative project between the Young Living Laboratory, Lehi, Utah, and Weber State University, Ogden, Utah. The publication of this research is the first step toward FDA approval of essential oils in MRSA prevention or therapy.

This type of research is highly hazardous to those who engage in it since you are working closely with a potentially deadly microbe or one that can infect you for life. Great precautions must be taken to minimize any possibility of infection among the researchers and laboratory staff. I want to personally thank the individuals named above who took a risk on behalf of humanity to provide us with this valuable information.

A Carrier Oil is a common term and type of product used in aromatherapy. A carrier oil is quite different than an essential oil. Carrier oils are fatty oils that come from seeds or nuts. Carrier oils are ‘not’ aromatic oils, whereas essential oils are widely known for their scents and health benefits.

Two Processes for Carrier Oils

The first process for obtaining a carrier oil is known as ‘cold pressed.’ Cold pressing is restricted to a relatively small scale production today due to the higher cost. The nuts or seeds are placed in a horizontal press with a rotating screw known as an ‘expeller’ and the oil is literally squeezed out. Despite the processing name, a certain amount of heat is produced during the process due to friction, but this rarely exceeds 70° or 80° C and causes little damage to the oil. The oil is then filtered and sold as a finished product.

The second process uses a method called ‘hot extraction’ and uses a similar process to cold pressing but also involves tremendous heat applied during the process to increase the yield of oil. Temperatures can reach up to 200° C which destroys the important vitamins and fatty acids.

The waste product from both methods of extraction, known as ‘cake’ is often re-processed using solvents to extract even more oil. This oil is re-heated again, refined, deodorised and the color is bleached out. Then, artificial color, preservatives and vitamins are added back.

These highly refined, solvent extracted oils usually end up on supermarket shelves for use in cooking and are therefore totally unsuitable to use in aromatherapy, and in my opinion highly unacceptable for cooking as well. The reason why I also recommend to NEVER allow your cooking oils to get so hot that they smoke is because when your fatty oils smokes, that means the molecular structure has broken down and it simply is NOT healthy to eat in any food. I personally do not buy these lower quality fatty oils for cooking purposes either.

Tip: When I’m cooking, this usually occurs during or before sauteing, if my fatty oil smokes I take the pan off the stove and wipe the pan clean and start all over again. I can’t even stand the smell of an oil smoking or browning, it instinctually turns me off to eating the food or even cooking with the oil it’s so disgusting. When I think of all the vitamins, minerals and fatty acids that have been destroyed during a heat extraction process and that they are considered a ‘dead’ product it makes me feel good that I know the difference and I can make wiser choices, either in cooking or for my choice in a carrier oil.

Cold pressed oils for both aromatherapy purposes (for your skin) and for cooking is the type that should always be used. Your skin and body will feel the benefits of using a better quality cooking and carrier oil.

Additionally, fatty oils (carrier) can and ‘will’ turn rancid within a relatively short period of time (usually six months to a year). Thus, it is always recommended that when you make your own massage oils that it be done in small batches, small enough that you will use up the entire batch within a couple of months. It’s also always write on the bottom of your bottle (or make a label) with a permanent marker when you made your massage or aromatherapy mixture.

Using V-6 as Your Carrier Oil v-6-massage-oil

Young Living has a carrier oil called V-6, it is a nourishing, rich with antioxidant vegetable oils that is colorless and odorless. It’s the ideal carrier oil for essential oils. V-6 is used to dilute certain essential oils, or can be mixed with essential oils to create custom blends, formulas, and massage oils. This carrier oil nourishes the skin, has a long shelf life, doesn’t clog pores, and will not stain clothes.

V-6 Contains the Following Vegetable Oils:

Fractionated Coconut Oil is distilled from pure coconut oil. It is colorless, odorless, never goes rancid, and is easily washed out from fabrics.

Olive Oil is rich in cell-protecting phyto-nutrients and antioxidants like squalene.

Sesame Seed Oil contains powerful phytonutrients and is nourishing to the skin.

Almond Oil is high in vitamin E and phytonutrients. Highly nourishing to the skin, it protects cell membranes from oxidative damage.

Sunflower Seed Oil is compatible with the skin’s natural oils and sebum.

Wheatgerm Oil is rich in lecithin, vitamin E, and B vitamins. Protects skin from free radical damage. Moisturizing and noncomedogenic.

Carrier oils, such as a V-6, can extend your Young Living essential oils and provide more efficient use. When massaging, the V-6 oil also helps lubricate the skin which proves a nice glide.

What Makes an Essential Oil Different than a Carrier Oil

  • Essential oils are ‘volatile oils’, meaning they evaporate or dissipate into the air (fatty oils do not do this).
  • Essential oils are aromatic.
  • Therapeutic-grade essential oils provide healing benefits
  • Aromatherapy oils and perfume grade oils are NOT therapeutic-grade and should never be used for healing or ingestion as they always are adulterated and contain chemicals that you do not want on or in your body.

A Young Living essential oil which is ‘not’ combined with a fatty oil (carrier oil) pretty much has an indefinite shelf-life provided you do not expose your bottle of essential oil to extremes of heat, cold, or sunlight. The Young Living ’sigle’ oils do not contain any carrier oil nor are they adulterated, they are pure and therapeutic. Thus, it is recommended that when you do mix your Young Living essential oil with a carrier oil that if be done in smaller amounts or batches (what you’ll be able to use up within a couple of months or less).
