"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who'll decide where to go." ~ Dr. Seuss

Have you been thinking about exploring the possible healing properties that essential oils have? Maybe you have made a trip to your local natural food store, or other stores that carry small selections of essential oils. Perhaps you have purchased some essential oils from a store, or online from a company that sells essential oils.

What has your experience been? Are you able to use any of the oils internally? Do you know the history of the company that is providing the essential oils? Do they have their own farms? Do they process the essential oils and put them through strict testing to ensure their potency and purity? It is very important to know these answers.

Why?  If you have purchased inferior or adulterated essential oils, you could very possibly have adverse reactions. This could be a “turn off” for you.  And you may decide not to use essential oils to help you towards achieving optimal health.

So what is your option? Finding a reliable, ethical company that DOES provide quality, safe essential oils, that’s what!!

The Young Living Promise: Plants – Preparation – Purity – Potency

Plants

An oil’s potency can be affected not only by selecting the proper plant to cultivate, but also by where the plant is grown, the quality of soil in which the seed is planted, and even the time of day it’s harvested.

Young Living has extensive experience selecting the correct species of plant for desired oil potency, planting under optimal conditions, using ideal soil and natural methods to encourage growth, and knowing the precise time to harvest each crop. Only those plants that produce the most active and widest array of therapeutic compounds are selected.

Preparation

Once the optimal soil, plant, cultivation, and harvesting conditions have been adhered to, the plants must be distilled properly in order to meet YLTG standards. Young Living uses a gentle, proprietary technique for steam-extracting the most potent essential oils, which remains unmatched throughout the essential oils industry.

To meet YLTG distillation standards proper temperature must be maintained throughout the distillation process, and pressure, length of time, equipment, and batch size are strictly monitored.

Purity

YLTG standards prohibit the acceptance of any diluted, cut or adulterated oils. Every product Young Living produces—essential oils, oil blends, nutritional supplements, or personal care—meets strict purity standards.

Every batch of essential oils is subjected to rigorous, state-of-the-art analysis at the Young Living chemistry lab. Using some of the most advanced equipment in the world, our scientists subject every batch of essential oils to Gas Chromatograph and Mass Spectrometer testing, and heavy metals analysis. Oils that exhibit even the slightest hint of possible adulteration or tampering are rejected.

Potency

The culmination of the preceding three stages, Potency means that the naturally occurring compounds contained in each essential oil product are of the highest and most consistent bio-active levels. Without strict adherence to the YLTG standard in the Plant, Preparation, and Purity phases, the final product would not have the necessary potency to create the desired effect.

Farms (Read more on Young Living Farms)

Young Living has four farms equipped with distilleries—located in Mona, Utah, US; St. Maries, Idaho, US; Simiane-la-Rotonde, France; and Guayaquil, Ecuador, and most recently has set up a distillery in Oman, for distilling the highest quality Frankincense essential oil.  Having our own farms and distilleries allows Young Living Essential Oils to maintain its position as the world’s leading grower, distiller, and provider of pure, potent essential oils.

On our  Young Living farms, the cultivation, harvesting, and distillation processes of each batch of essential oils are carefully controlled. Extensive laboratory testing and independent audits are conducted to ensure Young Living’s quality exceeds industry standards. Experimentation performed on Young Living farms helps guarantee the consistent quality of Young Living essential oils, and allows for increased research and development opportunities.

It’s this hands-on experience of growing, distilling, sourcing, and testing essential oils that led to the development of the Seed to Seal™ process. This method, exclusive to Young Living Essential Oils, ensures that each Young Living essential oil product delivers the quality results customers have come to expect.

Young Living has over 150 essential oils, along with personal care products, pet care products, nutritional products, children’s products, household products and an antioxidant whole food energy drink.  All of our products are infused with essential oils, which not only makes are products unique, but even more therapeutic and beneficial for ourselves, family, friends and our pets.

Do you ever feel like you could use a quick pick me up to feel happier? Have you ever thought of how a scent changes how you feel, or brings up memories of someone or something from your past? When you get to feeling low and want to get away from that feeling what do you do?

It is inevitable that we all are going to have bad moments or bad days. From stubbing our toe, breaking a glass, or getting some bad news. Suggestion, try not watching the news for a week.  We here about the news in our every day lives,  and it is most likely going to be sad, bad news, so why not remove oneself from it for a while.  You may realize you don’t need to watch the news. You won’t miss out, because if you don’t watch it on TV, for sure you will hear about it from someone.

So what kind of quick fixes are there that may help you to feel better? Better yet, is this quick fix going to help you to feel better in a natural way rather than using a drug or chemical of some sort.  The answer is YES!!

Being a regular user of therapeutic-grade essential oils I am aware of the joyful, uplifting oils that are available.  I always start my day applying an essential oil and I have available with me at all times, different essential oils that may help me or others for various circumstances.

What are some essential oils that could be used to help one be in a happier mood?

  1. Abundance blend was created to enhance the frequency of the harmonic magnetic energy field that surrounds us. This higher frequency creates what is called “the law of attraction,” which refers to the things we attract to ourselves. Might as well attract happiness! Abundance opens us to a wealth of possibilities.  Apply topically and or diffuse.
  2. Gratitude blend is a soothing blend of therapeutic-grade essential oils designed to elevate the spirit, calm emotions, and bring relief to the body while helping to foster a grateful attitude.  Start your day and end your day thinking of what you are grateful for.  Apply topically and or diffuse.
  3. Harmony blend is an exquisite blend that promotes physical and emotional well-being by bringing harmonic balance to the energy centers of the body. The liberating, balancing, and calming essential oils in this blend open us to new possibilities while contributing to an overall feeling of well-being.  If you have chaos about you, diffuse this essential oil and it may help to balance the energy around you.  Apply topically and or diffuse.
  4. Jasmine has a warm, exotic, floral fragrance that relaxes, soothes, uplifts, and enhances self-confidence. Jasmine is beneficial for the skin. It has been used throughout history for romance and attraction and for balancing the feminine energy of the body. Apply topically and or diffuse.
  5. Joy blend is a luxuriously exotic blend with uplifting overtones that creates magnetic energy and brings joy to the heart. When worn as cologne or perfume, Joy exudes an alluring and irresistible fragrance that inspires romance and togetherness. When diffused, it can be refreshing and uplifting. Apply topically and or diffuse.
  6. Lavender has a fresh, sweet, floral, herbaceous aroma that is soothing and refreshing. Because it is the most versatile of all essential oils, no home should be without it. Lavender is an adaptogen, and therefore can assist the body when adapting to stress or imbalances. Apply topically and or diffuse.
  7. Rose has a beautiful, strong floral and sweet fragrance that is intoxicating and highly romantic. It helps bring balance and harmony with stimulating and uplifting properties that create a sense of well-being and self-confidence.  Dab a little under your nose, to breath in the beautiful scent throughout the day. Apply topically and or diffuse.
  8. White Angelica blend is a calming and soothing blend that encourages feelings of protection and security. It combines oils used during ancient times to enhance the body’s aura, which brings about a sense of strength and endurance. Many people use it as protection against negative energy. White Angelica works great applied to shoulders.  Apply topically and or diffuse.
  9. Ylang Ylang has a sweet, soft, flowery fragrance that has made it a romantic favorite. In Indonesia, the petals are often strewn across a marriage bed. Ylang ylang is extremely effective in calming and bringing about a sense of relaxation, and it may help with releasing feelings of anger, tension, and nervous irritability.  Apply topically and or diffuse.

After you have your essential oil, click here for ways to use essential oils.

The first place to apply the essential oil is to the bottoms of your feet. Before you put your shoes on for the day, take a moment to first drop 1-2 drops of the essential oil and about 1/8 teaspoon of V6 carrier oil onto the palm of your hand, stir three times in a clock wise motion, and then apply to the bottoms of your feet.

With the remainder of the scent that is on your hands, cup your hands over your nose and take several nice long deep inhalations. (Be mindful to not touch your face with your hands, just cup your hands about an inch away from your nose and face.)  Read more on aromatherapy

When essential oils are applied to the bottoms of the feet the essential oil passes easily through our skin and cell membranes within 20 minutes.

Diffusing

You can also put 5-10 drops of the essential oil in a diffuser to diffuse in your environment. The bonus by doing this is not only may it help you to feel more joyful and happy, but anyone else that is around may feel better too.

When diffusing essential oils the essential oil is in the air, and you are breathing in the tiny molecules of essential oil and this effect may help to balance your moods.

In a cold air nebulizer diffuser start by diffusing your Young Living essential oils for 15-30 minutes, one to four times a day for normal situations. Place the nebulizer diffuser higher in the room (a shelf, bar, or fireplace mantle are good choices) so that the essential oil mist has a longer distance to fall through the air. (Read more on diffusing)

The natural properties found in Young Living essential oils produce a soothing, uplifting effect on the mind and emotions. When an essential oil containing the optimum level of therapeutic constituents is diffused, the result fosters a sense of emotional balance and well-being.

When the aroma of essential oils are inhaled, the scent travels to the reticular system of the brain stem where emotions and memories are connected. This enables essential oils to improve emotional wellness in many ways.

Aromatherapy, or essential oils, are helpful in elevating and balancing moods. Nature has many answers for problems and balancing out emotions is one of them. Therapeutic grade essential oils carry the “life force” of the plant and they offer the plant’s vibrancy and normalizing effects.

The fragrance of an essential oil can directly affect everything from your emotional state to your lifespan. Essential oils work differently than any other natural substance.

Another way to use essential oils is to wear them as a perfume.  Apply the essential oil as you would a perfume, on your pulse points and enjoy the fragrance and how you feel.

Essential oils are an excellent way to show your love to others, by giving them a bottle as a gift.  They will appreciate the gesture of love and feel better wearing it and remembering who gave them the gift.

Mothers Day will be here very soon, but you still have time to make a natural, healing gift, made with love and that will be so appreciated by mom.  It doesn’t take much time and only a few supplies are needed.  Plus you can make enough for gifts for others and for you to enjoy as well.

Without further ado, here are a few aromatherapy gift ideas for you:

Sea Scents Bath Salts

For thousands of years, people have traveled to places far away to bathe in natural mineral pools. Bath salts are a simple way to experience some of the same benefits in the comfort of your own bath. And when combined with the aroma of natural essential oils, the experience can be truly amazing!

Ingredients:

  1. Salt. There are many different types of salts that can be used for bath salts. Some common salts used in bath salts include Epsom salts, sea salts, or regular table salts. Also available are some naturally colored salts that can be quite stunning when used for bath salts. How course or fine the salt is depends on your personal preference, just keep in mind that courser salt will take longer to dissolve than fine salt. Some good places to check for different types of salts would be the grocery store, health food stores, pharmacies, craft stores, and the internet. You may want to check the ingredient list on any salt you get to see what (if any) ingredients have been added in case of allergies or other health concerns.
  2. Essential Oils of choice.
  3. Food Coloring (if desired). Food coloring is an easy and inexpensive way to color bath salts. Just be sure that if you use them that any recipients know what colors were used in case they are allergic to a certain colorant. Also don’t try to make your salts very dark colors, or you may end up staining your tub. Some people also use mica powders to color their bath salts, but these can be harder to find.

Instructions:

1.  Pour 1 cup of your desired salt (or a combination of several salts) into a bowl (use either a  stainless steel or a disposable bowl—plastic and glass bowls can sometimes get permanently scented by essential oils)
2.  Add 2-10 drops of your favorite essential oil or blend, to the salt and stir together until no clumps of salt remain and the oil is distributed throughout the salt. Some oils that might work well either individually or as part of a blend are listed below.  Always start with less essential oil, as the aroma can be very strong and you don’t want to be too overpowering.  If you do have too much aroma, just add more salt.

  • For a scent that reminds one of the sea, try different blends of sandalwood, vetiver, lavender, jasmine, chamomile or cedarwood.
  • For a more relaxing bath salt, try lavender, chamomile, geranium, clary sage, or sandalwood or blend of Peace and Calming.
  • For a more invigorating bath salt, try cypress, fir, juniper, lemon, nutmeg, orange, grapefruit or peppermint.
  • For a more romantic bath salt, try rose, jasmine, clary sage, geranium, rosewood, or ylang ylang.

3.  If desired, add one or two drops of coloring to the salt and mix thoroughly until color is evenly dispersed throughout the salt.
4.  If you live in a humid area, you may want to spread your bath salt mixture on a baking sheet or a sheet of foil or parchment and let it dry for 4-8 hours (stirring occasionally). This can help prevent your mixture from clumping together.
5.  Using a funnel, carefully pour your bath salt mixture into small decorative jars.
6.  Create a label or gift-tag that says what kind of bath salt it is, what the ingredients are, and how to use it (typically 1/4 – 1/3 cup of bath salts dissolved in warm bath water is a good amount). For example, your label or gift-tag might read:

Sea Scents Bath Salt: Contains natural sea salt, and pure essential oils of jasmine and cedarwood. Add one-fourth to one-third cup to warm bath water, wait until dissolved, and enjoy!

Extra Ideas

  1. This recipe can be easily adjusted for different amounts, just keep the proportions the same.
  2. If you are using a courser salt that may take longer do dissolve, you may want to make a small bag with a drawstring out of a fine mesh material to place the salt in. This bag can then be filled with the correct amount of bath salts and hung on the spout of the tub with the drawstring so that the bag is underneath the water that is coming from the spout. This will help speed the dissolving process, and will also keep the un-dissolved salt out of the tub.
  3. Try layering different colored salts in clear glass jars to create some neat effects.

Natural solid perfume:

This natural solid perfume is easy to make, contains no alcohol, and uses all natural essential oils!

Ingredients Needed:

  1. Beeswax: This can be found at local health stores, craft stores, or candle-making supply stores. It is available either in its natural golden color, or it is also available in a bleached white color. It can be purchased either in blocks that can be grated with a cheese grater to get smaller pieces that are easier to work with, or it can also be purchased as small pellets. For this recipe you will need one tablespoon.
  2. Jojoba oil: This can be found at many grocery stores and health stores. You will need three tablespoons for this recipe.
  3. Vitamin E (optional): This can be found either as capsules in most health and grocery stores, or it can also be found as a liquid in many drug stores. You will need either two capsules, or 6-8 drops of liquid for this recipe. Besides being an antioxidant, Vitamin E is also a natural preservative.
  4. Essential oils: These not only give your perfume its own unique scent and flavor, they also add the benefits of the essential oil you use to your creation. You will need about 90-120 drops of essential oil for this recipe.

Instructions:

  1. Pack grated beeswax or beeswax pellets into a Tablespoon size measuring spoon until it is packed level with the top, then dump the beeswax into a heat-proof measuring cup (such as a Pyrex™ brand measuring cup).
  2. Add 3 Tablespoons of jojoba oil to the beeswax.
  3. Place the measuring cup in a large frying pan that is filled with 1″ of hot water.
  4. Place the frying pan and measuring cup on the stove and turn the burner on low.
  5. Stir the mixture in the measuring cup with a popsicle stick or bamboo skewer every couple of minutes until the wax is completely melted (about 15-20 minutes).
  6. Turn off stove and carefully remove the measuring cup from the frying pan and place the measuring cup on a towel on a counter-top or table.
  7. If desired, stir in the contents of 1 capsule of vitamin E (or 3-4 drops liquid vitamin E).
  8. Allow the mixture to cool slightly, then stir in 90-120 drops of your desired essential oil or blend. Note: You may find it easier to pre-measure the essential oil in another container and add it all at once.
  9. Quickly pour the mixture into 1/4 oz lip gloss containers, or any other small jar or container. This recipe will fill three or four containers.
  10. Allow mixture to cool for several hours. To use, take a small amount of the solid perfume from the container with your finger, and place on the wrists, the neck, or any other location on the skin that is desired.

Essential oils to use:

Singles:  Geranium, Jasmine, Lavender, Patchouli, Rose, Rosewood, Sandalwood, Ylang Ylang.

Blends: Abundance, Awaken, Envision, Gratitude, Harmony, Hope, Joy, Live with Passion, Peace & Calming, Sacred Mountain, Sensation, White Angelica

Extra Ideas:

Create fun labels for your perfume using 1″ x 4″ labels. Set up your labels so that one label fits on top of the other label on each 1″ x 4″ label, then cut the label in half after printing so you have two labels that each measure 1/2″ x 4″. This size fits perfectly on the bottom half of our 1/4 oz lip gloss containers. You may also want to create a 1″ circular label for the top of the container.

These are some easy, fun ideas for gifts to make for Mothers Day or for anytime to give a gift of thanks, appreciation, and of love throughout the year. Have a party and invite friends over, and create these therapeutic gifts together.  While you are making them you too will enjoy the aromatherapy while you are working with the essential oils and knowing that you along with your friends and family, you will all be blessed with natural treasures, free of toxins or chemicals.

Celebrating May Day is done differently in different areas of the world. I’ll be concentrating on May Day celebration in the good ole United States.

As quoted in Wikipedia:

“May Day was celebrated by some early European settlers of the American continent. In some parts of the United States, May Baskets are made. These baskets are small and usually filled with flowers or treats and left at someones doorstep. The basket giver would ring the bell and run away. The person receiving the basket would try to catch the fleeing giver. If they caught the person, a kiss was to be exchanged.”

From as far back as I can recall, I have always been sure to bring my mother flowers to recognize her on May Day.  Many times as a young girl, I would pick flowers from my grandmothers garden and bring both my mother and my grandmother a bouquet for May Day.

“The first Lei Day was proposed in 1927 in Honolulu. Leonard “Red” and Ruth Hawk composed “May Day is Lei Day in Hawai’i,” the traditional holiday song. Originally it was a contemporary fox trot, later rearranged as the Hawaiian hula song performed today.”

“In Hawaii, May Day is also known as Lei Day, and is normally set aside as a day to celebrate island culture in general and native Hawaiian culture in particular. While it was invented by a poet and a local newspaper columnist in the 1920s, it has since been adopted by state and local government as well as by the residents, and has taken on a sense of general spring celebration there.”

The luscious smells of Hawaiian flowers laying around your neck or draped in your hair, is a wonderful experience to behold. Many of us don’t have the chance to experience this, so what can we do to come close to having a beautiful lei of flowers adorning our neck?  Could and essential oil be a way to try?

Two oils that came to my mind that have tropical scents, either by themselves or combined are:

Jasmine (Jasminum officinale) has a warm, exotic, floral fragrance that relaxes, soothes, uplifts, and enhances self-confidence. Jasmine is beneficial for the skin. It has been used throughout history for romance and attraction and for balancing the feminine energy of the body.*

How to use: For aromatic use.

Possible skin sensitivity. If pregnant or under a doctor’s care, consult your physician.

Cleopatra was said to of had the sails of her ships soaked in Jasmine oil and then the ships were sent out to sea and strategically placed so that the scent from the sails would blow towards other ships.  When the ships smelled the Jasmine they became intoxicated by the scent and would sail into her port. While there they would spend their time partaking and buying from all the wonderful vendors and their wares.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) has a warm, spicy fragrance that is energizing. Supportive of the digestive system, ginger is commonly used to soothe, comfort, and balance digestive discomfort along with motion sickness and even may help with vertigo* It may also be used to enhance the flavor of foods.

How to use: For dietary or topical use. When using as a supplement, dilute one drop in 4 fl. oz. of liquid such as soy or rice milk.

Possible skin sensitivity. If pregnant or under a doctor’s care, consult your physician. Dilution recommended for both topical and internal use. Dilute before using on sensitive areas such as the face, neck, genital area, etc. Keep out of reach of children. Avoid using on infants and very small children.

To have the pleasure of one or both of these tropical scents, put 1-2 drops in the palm of your hand and run your hands through your hair.  Also apply 1-2 drops on your wrists like a perfume.

With the remainder of the scent that is on your hands, cup your hands over your nose and take several nice long deep inhalations. (Be mindful to not touch your face with your hands, just cup your hands about an inch away from your nose and face.) (Read more on “Aromatherapy”)

To add even more “punch” to your May Day celebration, try diffusing either Jasmine or Ginger or combining both. Your house will smell like being in a tropical garden. (Read more on diffusing).

Enjoy and celebrate May Day, whether with the aroma of essential oils, a beautiful lei around your neck or a pretty basket or bouquet of flowers.

Spikenard was highly regarded in India as a perfume, health-supporting herb, and skin tonic. Prized at the time of Christ, it was used by Mary of Bethany to anoint the feet of Jesus before the Last Supper. This is a relaxing and soothing oil for the skin.

Spikenard is an aromatic flowering herb native to the Himalayan Mountains of India and Tibet. In Biblical times it was imported from there to the Holy Land and shipped in boxes carved from alabaster. This fact is yet another clue that the woman’s ointment contained spikenard.

Highly regarded in India as a medicinal herb. It was one of the most precious oils in ancient times, used only by priests, kings, or high initiates. References in the New Testament describe how Mary of Bethany used a salve of spikenard to anoint the feet of Jesus before the Last Supper. According to Dietrich Gumbel, Ph.D. it strengthens heart and improves circulation.

Two days before the Passover in the house of Simon the Leper, was where Jesus was anointed on his head. Six days before the passover the oil was poured over his feet.

Song Of Solomon 4:13—“Thy plants are an orchard of pomegranates, with pleasant fruits; camphire, with spikenard,”

Scriptures: Song of Solomon 1:12; 4:13, 14 Matthew 26:6-7; Luke 7:36-38; Mark 14:3; John 12::1-3

Source: From plant roots

Ancient Use: Perfumes, medicines skin tonic, incense, mood enhancer, reduces anxiety. Heals scar tissue. On of the last oils to be received by Jesus before being arrested and going to the cross, perhaps to help prepare him for his ordeal. Spikenard is applied as a “precious ointment” in combination with Myrrh.

Modern Uses: Allergies, migraine, nausea, cardiovascular support, relaxing, soothing, emotionally calming, mood elevating.*

Application:  Applied to abdomen, on location, inhaled, on feet, on head.

Spikenard is found in: Humility and Exodus II

Spikenard (Nardostachys jatamansi) has also been known as “nard” and “false Indian Valerian root” oil. It was prized in early Egypt and in the Middle East during the time of our Savior. Spikenard is 93% sesquiterpenes, which have the ability to oxygenate the brain. The amount of Spikenard that was poured on our Savior before his death would be worth almost $2,000.00 in today’s currency…or a year’s wages for a common laborer in that time.

Uses of Spikenard:

  • Dilute a few drops with V-6 Mixing Oil and apply to rough or wrinkled skin.*
  • Dilute 50/50 with V-6 Mixing Oil and apply on location, may help with hemorrhoids (this may sting initially).*
  • Apply 2-4 drops at pulse points (wrists, inside elbows, base of throat) 2-3 times daily, may help with cholesterol.*
  • Apply 1-2 drops at forehead, temples and mastoids (the bones just behind the ears), may help to vitalize your brain.
  • In India, one drop is taken near the end of a meal to calm the stomach.* (Note: Spikenard is not considered a Food Additive or a Food Flavoring by the FDA.)
  • Apply a few drops on the stomach to sooth indigestion.*
  • Diffuse or inhale directly from the bottle to help create an atmosphere of forgiveness.*
  • Apply a few drops and wear as a perfume or use for a deodorant.*
  • Apply a few drops to feet and crown of head to help ground and balance the mind and stimulate a feeling of courage and power.*
  • Place a drop on a cut, may help disinfect and speed healing.*

Spikenard may be purchased singularly or in the 12 Ancient Oils of Scripture Kit.  If you have any questions, please contact me, as I would enjoy hearing from you and helping you on your journey towards the healing arts of essential oils.
