I love powdered cinnamon and therapeutic Cinnamon Bark essential oil from Young Living Essential Oils, which is one of my favorites. It’s especially nice in blends, such as the very popular Thieves essential oil blend. In the study below it was found that cinnamon ‘leaf’ oil from the species Cinnamomum osmophloeum has simplar properties as Cinnamomum cassia, which has a Trans-cinnamaldehyde content of 70-88 percent. Cinnamon Bark Cinnamomum verum has a trans-cinnamaldehyde content of 40-50 percent and a Eugenol content of 20-30 percent.

This is all worth noting because all aromatherapy oils labeled ‘Cinnamon’ rarely come from any of the species mentioned above – and – even more rarely are they distilled properly from the ‘bark’ – this makes a huge difference in the results, whether used to kill insect pests, killing micro-organisms, or in healing. See my previous article, Does Your Cinnamon Bark and Benefit?

When I read a study with findings like this there are things I would want the reader to know before making any attempt to kill insect pests, the environment, or using the essential oil with humans. First, Cinnamon Bark essential oil is considered a ‘hot’ essential oil; meaning it’s spicy and could irritate skin when used topically, it could also irritate mucous membranes when inhaled if it’s diffused alone for long periods of time, and should always be diluted. Environmentally speaking, any superior quality essential oil could damage plants, beneficial insects, fish, frogs/toads – so always be  extremely mindful not to use large amounts and make sure to only target the pest and not something we value to get the best results.

Always remember… ‘one’ drop of a superior quality essential oil is many times more powerful than a large bottle of a lesser quality essential oil!

With the exception of the species Cinnamomum osmophloeum you can very safely assume that ALL cinnamon ‘leaf’ essential oils come nowhere close to having the same properties or results as Cinnamomum cassia and Cinnamomum verum.

The study states that the compound cinnamaldehyde showed the strongest activity at an LC50 (LC50 value is the concentration that kills 50 percent of mosquito larvae in 24 hours) of 29 ppm – this is an extremely small amount of essential oil needed to control mosquito larvae!

Testimonial: Using Thieves in My Garden

This may also explain why and how I get excellent results when I use my Thieves Household Cleaner for insect pest control – and – for eliminating Powdery Mildew on my garden plants. I use the heavy degreasing ratio (shown on the label) in my spray bottle filled with water. Almost always two applications works like a charm! The Thieves essential oil blend contains Cinnamon Bark and is the key ingredient in the Thieves Household Cleaner responsible for addressing my garden pest issues. I also make sure there are no beneficial insects nearby when I spray! ~ Evelyn Vincent

Cassia, Cinnamomum cassia, is a very expensive essential oil – if you find it and it’s not extremely expensive you can be certain that it is NOT a superior quality essential oil with all of it’s natural constituents in tact, not to mention, it would probably be loaded with chemicals that were used during distillation and/or processing.

Young Living does not sell Cassia as an individual purchase. It can only be obtained in a kit called “Twelve Oils of the Ancient Scripture.” Cassia is a very precious oil, one that I would not use to control mosquito larvae. Cassia’s Trans-cinnamaldehyde content is 70-88 percent and the Cinnamyl Acetate content is 0-6 percent.

I only use Cinnamon Bark Cinnamomum verum for my insect and fungal control in the form of the Thieves Household Cleaner diluted in water in a spray bottle - which is a very powerful essential oil having a cinnamaldehyde content of 40-50 percent ,which is far more potant than your average cinnamon leaf oil.

Cinnamon Bark (Cinnamomum verum) essential oil from Young Living is very reasonably priced for home use, at $28.62 for a 5ml bottle retail (24% less at wholesale) making this an effective essential oil to make up your own mosquito larvae, pest and insect control concoction.

Additionally, therapeutic-grade Cinnamon Bark (Cinnamamum verum) essential oil has a very impressive ORAC score of 103,448!

Historical Information

Listed in Dioscorides’ De Materia Medica (A.D. 78), Europe’s first authoritative guide to medicines, the standard reference work for herbal treatments for over 1,700 years. Cinnamon was reputed to be part of the “Marseilles Vinegar” or “Four Thieves Vinegar” used by grave-robbing bandits to protect themselves during the 15th century plague. The Thieves essential oil is a blend based on the “Four Thieves Vinegar.”

Medical Properties of Cinnamon Bark

Cinnamon Bark has many known and important medicinal qualities, some are: anti-inflammatory (COX2 inhibitor), powerfully antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, anticoagulant, circulatory stimulant, stomach protectant (ulcers), antiparasitic (worms).

Cinnamon Bark essential oil is found in: All of the Thieves edible toothpastes and KidScents Toothpaste, Egyptian Gold, Exodus II, Gathering, Highest Potential, Magnify Your Purpose and Thieves essential oil blends, Mineral Essence Tincture, Thieves Bar Soap, Thieves, Household Cleaner, Thieves Foaming Hand Soap, Thieves Hard and Soft Lozenges, Thieves Waterless Hand Purifier, Thieves Spray, and Thieves Wipes. Article: Cinnamon Oil Kills Mosquitoes by Michael Bernstein Source EurekAlert!

Cinnamon oil shows promise as a great-smelling, environmentally friendly pesticide, with the ability to kill mosquito larvae, according to a new study published in the July 14, 2004 issue of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Chemical Society, the world’s largest scientific society.

The researchers also expect that cinnamon oil could be a good mosquito repellent, though they have not yet tested it against adult mosquitoes.

Besides being a summer nuisance, mosquitoes pose some major public health problems. While conventional pesticide application is often effective in controlling mosquito larvae before they hatch, repeated use of these agents has raised serious environmental and health concerns.

“These problems have highlighted the need for new strategies for mosquito larval control,” says Peter Shang-Tzen Chang, a professor in the School of Forestry and Resource Conservation at National Taiwan University and lead author of the paper. Scientists are increasingly turning to more benign natural chemicals to ward off mosquitoes and other pests.

Chang and his coworkers tested eleven compounds in cinnamon leaf oil for their ability to kill emerging larvae of the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti. “Four compounds — cinnamaldehyde, cinnamyl acetate, eugenol and anethole — exhibited the strongest activity against A. aegypti in 24 hours of testing,” Chang says.

Larvicidal activity is judged with a measurement called LC50. “The LC50 value is the concentration that kills 50 percent of mosquito larvae in 24 hours,” Chang explains. Lower LC50 translates into higher activity, because it takes a lower concentration to kill larvae in the same amount of time. All four compounds had LC50 values of less than 50 parts per million (ppm), with cinnamaldehyde showing the strongest activity at an LC50 of 29 ppm.

Other common essential oils, such as catnip, have shown similar promise in fighting off mosquitoes, but this is the first time researchers have demonstrated cinnamon’s potential as a safe and effective pesticide, according to Chang.

Cinnamaldehyde is the main constituent in cinnamon leaf oil and is used worldwide as a food additive and flavoring agent. A formulation using the compound could be sprayed just like a pesticide, but without the potential for adverse health effects — plus the added bonus of a pleasant smell.

Bark oil from the Cinnamomum cassia tree is the most common source of cinnamaldehyde, but the tree used in this study — indigenous cinnamon, or Cinnamomum osmophloeum — has been of interest to researchers because the constituents of its leaf oil are similar to those of C. cassia bark oil. The leaves of C. osmophloeum, which grows in Taiwan’s natural hardwood forests, could be a more economical and sustainable source of cinnamon oil than isolating it from bark, Chang says.

Though the team only tested the oil against the yellow fever mosquito, cinnamon oil should prove similarly lethal to the larvae of other mosquito species, the researchers say. In further studies they plan to test cinnamon oil against other types of mosquitoes as well as different commercial pesticides.

“We think that cinnamon oil might also affect adult mosquitoes by acting as a repellent,” Chang says. The researchers haven’t yet tested this theory, but they plan to find out in the near future.

The Council of Agriculture of the Executive Yuan, a government agency in Taiwan, provided support for this research.

"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who'll decide where to go." ~ Dr. Seuss

Bed bugs are escalating because of global travel; the increase of homeless and underground communities; the popularity of “Flea” markets and 2nd-hand store merchandise. The escalation of bed bugs is alarming and people should be aware of the problem, how difficult it is to be rid of them, yet not be too discouraged, because there are natural, safe, chemical free ways to have those bed bugs be gone.

If you’re traveling or you’ve just recently purchased some used furniture, it’s a good idea to do an inspection for any mature bed bugs.  Bed bugs tend to be found in dwellings that are frequently used, like motels, hotels, apartments, dorms, care facilities, and most especially used furniture.

If you think you’re being bitten, it’s best to do a search of your home for these pests.  Bedding, clothes hampers, throw rugs, pillows and furniture are probably the first places you’ll want to search for bed bugs.

Vacuuming the mattress, using the “Bed Bug Spray” mentioned below, and applying a seal-able cover over the mattress should be sufficient.  Meanwhile, all clothes, linens, and bedding should be washed in HOT water, and the surrounding area vacuumed thoroughly.

Make sure that you dry the sheets and clothes in the dryer and not on a clothes line, as it is the long time in the dryer, not the washing machine, that will really ensure the bed bugs are dead.

Essential oil lovers prefer the Eco-friendly approach, and research shows that tree oils work best against parasites and menacing insects. Gary Young touts the praises of Palo Santo oil as the first choice for insect repellent. Palo Santo comes from an Ecuadoran tree which develops a resin to protect against infestation and it is from that resin that Young Living distills the Palo Santo oil.

Eucalyptus has been used historically for bed bugs, and Eucalyptus Blue is the first anti-viral Eucalyptus Oil . Native American Indians relied on pine needles and Cedarwood chips in their mattresses to ward off ticks and fleas.

Young Living essential oils are the essential oils that are being recommended for the following suggestions, as these essential oils are high quality therapeutic-grade essential oils.  Read more on quality of oils.

Spray on Bed Between Linen Changes: Thieves Spray

Palo Santo Oil: Palo Santo (Bursera graveolens) comes from the same botanical family (Burseraceae) as frankincense, although it is found in South America rather than the Middle East. Like frankincense, Palo Santo is known as a spiritual oil, traditionally used by the Incas to purify and cleanse the spirit from negative energies. Even its Spanish name reflects how highly this oil is regarded: Palo Santo means “holy wood” or “sacred wood.” The resin forms only after the tree is down for 5 years, and this resin from which the oil is extracted, protects the tree from various parasites.*

Eucalyptus Blue Oil: Eucalyptus Blue has a fresh, invigorating aroma that supports normal breathing and soothes tense muscles. This essential oil is grown and harvested in Ecuador. This is the first form of Eucalyptus that is also anti-viral. This essential oil contains high levels of the powerful constituents eucalyptol and alpha-pinene, and follows in the same tradition as a repellent to insects.*

Cedarwood Oil: Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica) has a warm, balsamic, woody aroma. It is relaxing and soothing when used for massage, and has long been used as a beneficial ingredient in cosmetic preparations for oily skin.*

Purification® Oil Blend: Purification® is a powerful blend of Therapeutic Grade A Melaleuca (Tea Tree oil); Citronella, Lemongrass, Rosemary, Lavandin and Myrtle essential oils. Purification® can be used directly on the skin to cleanse and soothe insect bites, cuts, and scrapes. When diffused, it helps to purify and cleanse the air from environmental impurities including cigarette smoke and other disagreeable odors.*

Thieves Household Cleaner: Experience the wonder of Thieves® Household Cleaner, as tough stains and problem areas in your home become simple and easy to clean without using harsh or abrasive chemicals. Thieves Essential Oil is legendary as was proven at Weber State University to exhibit a kill rate of 99.96% against all airborne bacteria including MRSA, Staph, Strep, e-Coli and Toxic Black Mold. While bacteria can be dangerous, some industrial cleaners on the market pose an even larger threat to your health. Thieves Household Cleaner is a safe all-purpose “green” concentrate that can be used in every room in your home, without the harsh chemicals. Dilution ratios are listed on the label for your convenience.

people-happy-freeI am always amazed after I am done with a detoxing fast and feel so good, because it is then when I realize exactly how badly I was feeling before! I suspect many people don’t know how bad they are feeling and how much better they can feel. Things like clarity of mind and skin improve, sometimes little health problems vanish, and the thing I find interesting is the eyes. During a detox and especially a detox fast, your eyes may change colors! Blue eyes will often times become more clear and blue, some brown eyes will become hazel, and hazel eyes often start looking very dark blue! The eyes are a window into the body, and if you have ever been to an iridologist you know they can tell you things that are going on throughout your body before you even tell them. Iridologist’s know that murky browns in many eyes is a sign of toxins in the body, and interestingly enough people who are constipated usually have very brown centers close to the pupil of the eye, and after correcting the problem with cleansing this often clears up showing the true eye color.

The purpose of fasting is so that the body can rest from digesting food, and focus it’s energy on eliminating toxins and healing the body. In the book Essential Oils Desk Reference “An extremely important benefit of fasting is the elimination of toxins. By minimizing the work our digestive system must do, we allow it to repair itself and clean up stored toxins.” They go on to say “Exercise makes fasting work better, particularly if one is trying to lose weight.” According to M.D. Elson M. Haas, “Fasting clearly improves motivation and creative energy; it also enhances health and vitality and lets many of the body systems rest.”

Fasting can be a wonderful way to facilitate cleansing, and health authorities teach that it can be beneficial if done in combination with herbal cleansing; however, as health authorities put it plain water fasting is like fire. Although it can eliminate toxins quickly, it can do thus too quickly and make a person feel very ill. Water fasting is not highly recommended by those in the know unless it is done starting out slow (i.e, one day the first week, two days the next, and so on and so forth). I still would not do water fasting without some ionic or trace minerals, such as Young Living’s Mineral Essence and some NingXia Red. The reason being is we don’t want the body to become depleted of important nutrients, however health practitioners have advocated plain lemon water fasting for centuries. The Master Cleanse by Stanley Burroughs is one I as well as many have done numerous times and done well on. A wonderful book on fasting is The Seasonal Detox by Iridologist Carrie L’Esperance. According to her, things such as headaches, cold or flu symptoms, constipation, depression, skin eruptions or fatigue are not abnormal during a fast, and they are a good sign that you are allowing your body to heal itself. Many health practitioners find that by keeping the colon open and moving, many of these problems can be avoided, however.

Although fasting in general is safe one should check with their health care professional before proceeding with one. Naturopathic doctors would be a the best choice since they are well educated in the area of fasting, more so then M.D.’s, but some doctors are becoming aware of the healing benefits of fasting. If your doctor does not know very much about fasting, he will most likely not advocate it just because he is being cautious (i.e. he is afraid you will try it, and not knowing anything about it he fears something may go wrong and you will blame him). For this reason it is suggested to find an Naturopathic doctor, or and M.D. who has studied into alternative medicine as well. Inquire at your local health food store or coop for local doctors that are more naturally minded. It is not recommended that women do cleanses when pregnant or nursing, and the very weak are not recommended to fast either. Because of pregnancy/nursing, and through two children I myself at one point was not able to do a cleanse for over 5 years. When I did one again, I did experience nausea and a mild headache-or what Dr. Christopher referred to as a mild “cleansing crisis”. Health authorities such as him say these are normal “cleansing crisis’s” and evidence the body needed detoxification. If I am feeling too sick, I simply break the fast and eat the heathiest food I can and attempt the cleanse again later.

My personal favorite cleansing fast is one put together by Dr. Christopher, founder of the School of Natural Healing. The more modern science discovers, and the more I learn, the more I am impressed with this cleanse and how everything in it meets and exceeds all the “new” data that is always flooding in. My husband and I have found, however, even greater and faster cleansing benefit for ourselves by adding a couple more things, such as therapeutic grade essential oils! The difference is actually astounding. For example, Dr. Gary Young spoke of how a couple drops of  Thieves essential oil blend mixed together with a couple ounces vinegar on an empty stomach can work to eliminate inflammation, and balance and acidic body (which is what he and many, many other health authorities teach is the root cause of many diseases). The three day cleanse includes vinegar, and I simply add my Thieves to it. Another benefit of the Thieves is that according to the Essential Oils Desk Reference, it contains oils that are anti-septic, antiviral, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial. Below is the original Dr. Christopher’s Three Day Cleanse. He used to teach that this fast can be done once a month.

  • Sixteen oz prune juice (unsweetened)
  • One half hour later, eight oz apple, carrot, or grape juice (pick one for all three days)
  • Every half hour drink another eight oz. juice and all the pure water you can. One gallon of juice should be drank each day. Swish each mouthful of juice thoroughly.

Also, three times a day take the following:

  • One teaspoon cayenne pepper in water or juice
  • One tablespoon wheat germ oil
  • One tablespoon black strap molasses
  • One tablespoon honey and apple cider vinegar in a cup of warm water
  • One or two tablespoons olive oil, to aid in cleansing the liver and gall bladder
  • Castor oil fomentation, three times a day-soak a piece of flannel in castor oil and place over liver area. Massage in circular motion toward the heart. Place a hot water bottle over the cloth. Leave on for ½ hour.
  • Olive oil fomentation-same as castor oil. (I must admit, I don’t know that I have ever taken the time to do the Castor oil and the olive oil fomentation, yet I have still reaped benefit from doing the other parts of the cleanse. )
  • When I do this cleanse, I personally like to add more supplements as I have found even greater benefit from doing thus. The products I add to mine are as follows;

  • Enzymes such as Young Livings Essentialzyme, 3 times a day.
  • Young Living JuvaTone and Juva Flex Essential oil with my olive oil 2-3 times a day
  • Young Living Comfortone in place of or in addition to prune juice, 2 times a day or as needed to assure the bowels keep moving (very important, constipation during a cleanse is very bad and can make you sick).
  • 1 drop Young Living Thieves essential oil blend with my vinegar/cayenne/ water.
  • Young Living Mineral Essence to avoid mineral depletion.
  • 1 teaspoon Bentonite Clay and 1 teaspoon charcoal (found at health food stores) in 1 cup water- According to Dr. Richard Schultz the two have been said to draw over 600 different toxins from the body, including heavy metals Purchase Essential Oil Supplements Here.

    After I have done the above cleanse a time or two, I might add to the above supplements that facilitate nourishing other area’s. I wait until I have done the above a time or two just to make sure things don’t break loose too soon. I usually rotate the following;
  • Herbs 3 times a day such as K&B (Young Living) for kidney supplementation
  • Herbs 3 times a day such as Rehemogen (Young Living) for supporting the circulatory system
  • A parasite cleanse such as Young Living’s Parafree
  • Herbs such as cilantro, bugleweed, and yellow dock have been used for centuries to eliminate heavy metals

Some good things to do while on a cleansing fast are to try to minimize stress, if possible. Try to do things you enjoy doing, which will make the fast more enjoyable. If you can find a Raindrop practitoner, or talk a family member into doing one on you this would be a great time to have a Raindrop Therapy done. Massage using Young Living therapeutic grade oils can help work toxins out of the muscles. And of course, it is going to be important to stay close to a bathroom!!!

To summerize, I have found hunger to be minimized on the above fast (which is one of the reasons I love it), and after doing one I actually look forward to doing it again! Many find that after cleansing, symptoms such as fatigue and sluggishness go away, allergies become minimized, food tastes better, and since going on a cleanse shrinks an overstretched stomach problems such as overeating can away too. In her book, Carrie L’Esperance writes that on a fast “Everything gets better, including the memory, circulation, and digestion. These benefits are only the beginning. Health and happiness can become as contagious as disease. If we work on our health only when we are ill, we will usually return to the place where we started.” She goes on to say “Fasting reduces fat in the body. Women enjoy a firm waistline and men are delighted when the ‘love handles’ or the ‘spare tire’ around their waists disappear as a benefit of fasting. The body becomes less congested and is able to reshape, restore, and retexturize itself once the purification process begins. Of course this does not always happen instantaneously; for most of us it occurs gently and consistently through correct diet over time.”

Unless otherwise stated, these statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This article is not intended to diagnose, prescribe, claim to cure, or treat disease. Seek the advice of a professional in the case of disease or medical emergency.

In learning about alternative medicine, we are taught that the main concepts to facilitate greater health are quite simple; they are to create a lifestyle of cleansing and nourishing the body. The first step in this process is to cleanse or “detox”, and essential oils (only therapeutic grade) are proving themselves to be an invaluable asset to this process. Detoxing (also known as internal cleansing) is not a new concept. The Biblical account of Queen Esther teaches of how she went through a year of detoxification “purification” using herbs such as myrrh before she wedded King Ahasuerus! Those who are grandparents vividly remember the “Spring Tonics” and other home remedies they had to choke down when they were children, and those of us who are not grandparents remember our grandparents talking about them! These old fashioned “Spring Tonics” unfortunately have all but been forgotten now! One of the reasons people don’t detox anymore is because it has practically become a forgotten art and those who know about it do not realize the need for it.

Alas, when you consider the following, it becomes clear that there may be more need for detoxes then ever before! Did you know that health authorities teach that cleansing should not be just a once or twice a year event, but that it should be continuous? Dr. Richard Schulze taught that little things such as minor constipation for just one day can begin tostart-living-5-day-cleanse-kit contaminate the body and create a breeding ground for parasites, not to mention that the contents begin to rot and contaminate the entire body and also create a yeast/fungus overgrowth. The School of Natural Healing out of Utah teaches that when toxins begin to build up in the body, they can then find their way to the weakest areas of the body. For example, if somebody has weak kidneys or liver due to unhealthy lifestyle choices, or because of a genetic predisposition this is where the toxins will store up and they will further weaken these area’s. According to the Merck Manual of Medical Information, the blood has the capability’s of cleansing virus’s, bacteria, fungi, and other poisons. We must then ask ourselves, why hasn’t it been doing what they say it is capable of?

The problem is that so many peoples bodies are on overload already and the immune system cannot keep up. Today we are faced with more petrochemicals and toxins then our great grandparents ever were. Toxic/dangerous petrochemicals are found in the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, the household cleaning agents used in our work environment’s that further degrade the air, the body/skin care products used that are absorbed by the skin (I maintain that since the skin absorbs everything into the body that you really shouldn’t put anything on it you wouldn’t eat) and the list goes on of where we pick up toxins, not to mention that our bodies themselves create some just by normal cell turnover. When you consider all the above it is scary to think of how many of us have never detoxified our bodies! According to health practitioner’s some signs that a body may need cleansing include, loss of appetite, feeling sluggish or fatigued, constipation (of course!), the presence of disease, allergies, and skin problems to name a few.
