Using therapeutic grade essential oils can be a very rewarding experience. If you haven’t given them a try yet and are the type of person who is looking to have a ‘Green’ / eco-friendly home and lifestyle this can truely be the answer to what you’ve been looking for.

I began using essential oils about 25 years ago, I was tired of paying expensive prices for organic and all-natural household cleaning products and took the leap into essential oils upon hearing that you could use them for anything cleaning, to healing wounds and headaches, to staying alert, and staying well.

The necessary ingredient was to locate superior quality essential oils, and I’ll tell you, that was no easy feat 25 years ago! I searched high and low and ended up buying the best essential oils I could find. But it wouldn’t be until 1997 when I found precisely the superior quality I was looking for, Young Living Essential Oils (YLEO). Since that day, I have used only YLEO and I only recommend YLEO, regardless if I had a YLEO business or not. As a matter of fact, I only used and recommended them for several years before I even decided to have a YLEO business, which was about 5 years ago.

These essential oils are by far the best in the world. Only 2 percent of all essential oils in the world are of this superior quality. Young Living makes up most of that 2 percent. Unfortunately, that means 98 percent of the essential oils you come across are far lower quality, so don’t be fooled by the terms: 100% pure or organic, there are a million ways to ruin an essential oil and only one way to make them right. You can learn more about that here if you’re interested.

But, what I want to cover in this article is one particular collection of essential oils, the Essenttial 7 collection. This is a terrific assortment of 7 of the most popular essential oils. So, if you’re new to aromatherapy and essential oils, take a look at some of what can be achieved… when you step into the world of therapeutic grade essential oils… you are stepping into a brand world, a new way of seeing things and a new lifestyle.  Besides being the most eco–friendly way to go, the other thing I enjoy most is the sheer simplicity and ease in using essential oils for everything, making the switch is not only fun but it’s empowering! Try it and see for yourself!

Applications and Use of the 7 Essential Oils

  • Dietary Supplements: All of the single essential oils in this collection may be used as dietary supplements. Remember, all essential oils from YL are potent and superior quality, rarely will an adult use more than 2-6 drops of essential oil per “00″ capsule with a little olive oil added, or more than 1-2 drops added to a glass of water or milk. More on Immune System Tips.
  • Diffuse: All of the essential oils in this collection may by diffused – with the exception of PanAway. It’s not that PanAway would be harmful if diffused it’s more that it’s benefits would be wasted because this blend is designed to use topically for aches and pains of the body. Young Living has 5 diffusers to choose from. Using these diffusers will freshen the air eliminating the need for synthetic harmful air fresheners, provides the healthful benefits of aromatherapy (the simple act of inhaling therapeutic-grade essential oils, and helps to rid indoor air of germs and unpleasant. Never use a diffuser that diffuses by means of heat as heat or flame (as in candle diffusers) fractures the tiny molecules where all of the benefits are contained (more on heat and diffusing). For the curious, read…Viscosity of Essential Oils and How Quickly They’re Diffused and Smelly House to Aromatic Home
  • Topical Application: All of the oils can be applied to the Vita Flex points on the feet, added to bath water mixed with Young Living Bath & Shower Gel Base, applied topically or used with body and foot massage. More on Creating Your Home Spa and Massage and Bodywork.

"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who'll decide where to go." ~ Dr. Seuss

Flavored drinking water has been being sold on the market for many years, and people purchase it.  This may help one to get the water intake that is so lacking in many peoples daily lives. I wonder do they read the ingredients and are they OK with what they are consuming?

A much better way and is healthier and more economical along with being “green”, by not buying bottled water,  is by flavoring/ infusing your own water with food grade essential oils.  You get the benefit of good taste along with medicinal value all rolled into one refreshing and rewarding glass of water.

Here is a list of wonderful essential oils to add to your water:

  1. Cinnamon Bark – Dab a toothpick in the bottle of essential oil, then stir the toothpick into the glass of water.
  2. Cistus – 1 drop in a glass of water
  3. Citrus Fresh – 1 drop in a glass of water. Citrus Fresh is a blend of: orange, grapefruit, mandarin, tangerine, lemon and spearmint.
  4. Ginger – Dab a toothpick in the bottle of essential oil, then stir the toothpick into the glass of water.
  5. Grapefruit – 1 drop in a glass of water
  6. Lavender – 1 drop in a glass of water
  7. Lemon – 1 drop in a glass of water
  8. Ocotea – Dab a toothpick in the bottle of essential oil, then stir the toothpick into the glass of water.
  9. Orange – 1 drop in a glass of water
  10. Peppermint-1 drop in a gallon glass container. Very nice to put in the refrigerator on hot days, to help keep you cooled down.  1 drop of peppermint oil is enough for 28 cups of tea!!
  11. Spearmint - 1 drop in a glass of water
  12. Tangerine – 1 drop in a glass of water
  13. Wintergreen – Dab a toothpick in the bottle of essential oil, then stir the toothpick into the glass of water.

You can literally infuse all kinds of drinks with essential oils or add the essential oil to “hot” water for a cup of tea. Some of my favorites besides water are herbal teas, fresh extracted juices and smoothies.  Oh, and adding a drop of orange oil to your whip cream is very tasty.

By ingesting therapeutic grade essential oils you are helping yourself in many healthful ways.  Here is a condensed explanation of how each of the above mentioned essential oils may help you by taking them internally, applying topically or diffusing into the air. Our own homes to be a real source of stress. Our homes are suppose to be seen as a place of safety – a sanctuary and retreat. Our homes continue to be important places of retreat from the greater pressures of our work environment and a place to relax and enjoy friends and family, away from the stresses of the outside world. Now more than ever, our homes need to be healthy centers of calm to support and regenerate us, so the idea that they may cause us stress may be a good place to start making some changes. Bedroom a place in the home for relaxation and rejuvenation.

The modern lifestyle of luxury, excess, technological reliance and/or dependency that we have created and adapted to is beginning to be more widely linked to health issues. Many of today’s health issues are directly related to the toxins in cleaning products and personal care products we use daily. These are not only a source of ill health for us but for our kids, pets and the environment too. Now more than ever it’s important to consider what we can do daily to restore, preserve, and maintain good health and wellness.

Good health is not just the absence of disease, it’s about having vitality and feeling joyful. This can become a very real possibility when we rethink what we use, what we bring into our homes, and our diet, and make changes to home our environment.

Our ability to cope with everyday events is a reliable indicator of our physical, mental, and emotional health. Each of the 7 stressors below has a major impact on our health health and well-being. Although a single stressor may be handled individually without unbalancing the body too much, the cumulative effect of a few can be extremely harmful to our physical and mental well-being.

7 Stressors in Our Homes

With the exception of “clutter and disorder” Young Living essential oils and Thieves Household Cleaner can play a beneficial role in helping each of us to have happier, healthier lives. See, 11 Ways to Improve Health, Happiness and Longevity

I know I personally can see how switching changed and enhanced the quality of my life. There is just no way I would ever even think of going back to using the same kinds of products I used many years ago.

When we consider the positive effect essential oils and other Young Living products could have on our well-being we just might find the quality of our life changing.

Five Easy Steps to De-Stress Your Home

1. Diffusing Young Living Essential Oils

This is perhaps one of the easiest ways to change the vibe happening in a home. If there are kids running around screaming and tense adults on the verge of biting off someone’s head the simple act of smelling therapeutic-grade essential oils from a nebulizer diffuser can make a huge difference. More on Diffusers and Diffusing

Essential Oils I Recommend for Diffusing to Create a Relaxing Home

Tip: it is healthier to buy bees wax candles unscented and get your ‘scent’ from a cold-air nebulizer diffuser as you will get the healthy benefits of both this way. Candle makers NEVER use high quality essential oils because it would make their candles extremely expensive. Thus, always assume – all candles contain either the lowest quality essential oils that have been adulterated, or they are using perfume oils that are entirely from chemicals.

2. Rubbing Young Living Essential Oils on the Soles of the Feet

Yup, it’s true… simply rubbing a couple of drops of Young Living oils on the soles of your feet or shoulders is another excellent way to help de-stress and calm things down. It’s also a good way to help protect yourself from colds and flu, and get a restful nights sleep. Don’t under estimate the power of rubbing a couple drops of therapeutic-grade essential oils on the soles of your feet!

Young Living Essential Oils I Recommend for Calming the Body, Mind and Soul

3. Shifting the Negative Energy in Your Home

As a Traditional Feng Shui practitioner and trained in Space Clearing, I love knowing that we each have the power to clean up any negative energy in our homes that are lingering from a tense debate or rotten luck.

Essential Oils I Recommend for Shifting Negative Energy

  • Sacred Mountain
  • Joy
  • Peace & Calming
  • Citrus Fresh
  • Idaho Balsam Firmore on this lovely essential oil

For more details, see how to use armatherapy to shift the energy of your home

4. Clear the Toxic Products Out of Your Cabinets

This includes getting rid of common products that are poisonous – PLEASE remember to NOT throw them in the trash, bring them to the hazardous materials outlet in your area because you do NOT want these products to end up in a landfill or duped down your drain!!!

Make the Switch – Learn which products I use daily around the home and in place of toxic personal care products.

Young Living Oils I Recommend for Cleaning the Home

  • Thieves (both the essential oil and Household Cleaner)
  • Citrus Fresh
  • Purification

See Thieves Household Cleaner Testimonials

5. Addressing Diet Essential Oil flavored tea

There are many things that can be done to create a much better diet and I’ll just cover a few basics which include avoiding all processed foods and sugar substitutes. Replace those with locally grown fresh produce and grass-fed meats. Bringing the body into an alkaline state can be very helpful in alleviating many undesirable health conditions.

Add a drop of Young Living Lemon, Grapefruit or Peppermint essential oil to your cup of tea, flavorful and soothing (see guidelines for using essential oils internally).

"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who'll decide where to go." ~ Dr. Seuss

A popular way to use therapeutic essential oils to stay well during plane and vacation travel is to apply a couple drops of Thieves essential oils to the soles of your feet before leaving home – and – put several drops of Thieves essential oil or the blend R.C. on a cotton ball, place the cotton ball in a small baggie and every hour open the baggie and take several deep inhalations. The benefits of this are likely to help you not catch a cold or virus while traveling.

For air sickness, many rub a drop of either Peppermint or Ginger behind their ears. You will want to use a little carrier oil with either o these essential oils as they may be slightly irritating to delicate skin.

Prevent Motion Sickness Recipe

  • 2 drops Peppermint
  • 2 drops Ginger
  • 5 drops V-6 Massage Oil (a carrier oil)

Rub 6-10 drops of the above mixture on chest and stomach 1 hour before traveling.

Stomach Upsets, Stomach Cramping, Dysentery

Nothing can ruin a vacation than having to be near a toilet all of the time. There are a few therapeutic essential oil choices for bad bugs in the tummy. The most important thing to start doing a couple of weeks or month before leaving home is to get plenty of good bacteria in your gut – Life 5 is an excellent probiotic, 1-2 capsules daily are usually enough to get you in good shape. Young Living’s Life 5 is superior to all other acidolphilis supplements I’ve seen – I highly recommend it. Please check with authorities before leaving on your trip and see how many capsules you are allowed to bring (a full bottle may not be allowed, check first).

Essential Oils Known for Helping Stomach Upsets

The antibacterial, antiparasitic and antifungal properies of therapeutic essential oils can bring tremendous relief quickly. Those which would be the best for a travel First Aid kit are:

  • Thieves and Peppermint essential oils for dysentery. Mix 5 drops each with a little olive oil in a “00″ capsule (do not make these ahead of time as they could leak and make a mess). Please do NOT take other brands of essential oils internally, they are not superior quality and are not for internal use.
  • Di-Gize is a good choice for nausea and your average upset stomach. This essential oil blend can be applied topically to the abdomen with a little V-6 Massage Oil.

Essential Oil Travel First Aid Kit

Because I use essential oils for absolutely everything I would certainly be packing a smaller essential oil First Aid kit. Here is a list of the essential oils and products I would want and what I would use each for:

  1. Thieves essential oil - cleansing wounds, preventing skin infections, insect stings, for inhaling (especially good when around people who are sick/coughing, sneezing)
  2. Peppermint essential oil - achy, sore muscles, and headache pain, a drop in a glass of water for flavoring and enhanced digestion, inhale for alertness and congestion, several drops applied to soles of the feet to reduce fever, freshening stinky indoor/hotel air
  3. Lavender essential oil – skin issues and irritations, burns, scrapes, bites, deodorant, calming, can’t sleep
  4. Di-Gize essential oil - stomach upsets and food poisoning
  5. Lemon, Mountain Savory, Oregano essential oils - I combine 4 drops of  each essential oil in a “00″ capsule and add a little olive oil or V-6 and take twice a day when I find myself in a position of being prescribed an antibiotic – this is what I use in place of antibiotics when necessary. This for me is a lifesaver since I cannot take antibiotic drugs. I would make sure to bring some empty “00″ capsules so I can make this blend if necessary. Do NOT use other brands of essential oils in this way, internally, as they are adulterated and not for internal use. Because these 3 essential oils are highly antibacterial and antiviral, I wouldn’t hesitate to take 2 capsules a day if I felt a cold or flu bug coming on!
  6. LavaDerm Cooling Mist Spray – skin irritations, sunburn, cuts, scrapes
  7. Thieves Ultra Toothpaste – this is the best toothpaste ever, and it’s edible! It can also be used as an underarm deodorant.
  8. Life 5 supplement - maintaining good stomach/gut bacteria, great if you’ve eatten bad food

All of the above are the absolute minimum I would want to have on hand when doing any kind of traveling, hiking or camping.

If I had the space and could take more, I would also include…

  • Thieves Waterless Hand Purifier - this is great for keeping cold and flu-free, no chemicals so it’s great for kids too! I would also use it as an antibacterial if I got a cut, scrape, mild skin infection.
  • Palo Santo essential oil – to repel insects, and topically for sore achy muscles
  • Melrose essential oil - topically for skin fungus, wound cleaning/healing
  • Stress Away essential oil Roll-On – alleviate stress, and as a perfume (scent is lovely)
  • R.C. essential oil - inhale or topically on chest for congestion/respiratory, terrific for MRSA infection situations

Each person and family are different, please see this list to get ideas of which essential oils and products would be right for you and your family when traveling.

And remember… place your order 1-2 weeks before you plan to go away!

This Lemon Herb Vinaigrette is absolutely amazing! So easy to make and will delight your holiday company any time of year. My friend Debra Lane created this recipe for a cooking with Essential Oils class we held a few years ago. Debra is a chef who totally appreciates natural foods and the value of using food grade essential oils in her dishes. Serve this vinaigrette to your guests and ‘you’ will get raves!

Cooking with essential oils does require knowing the basics as essential oils are extremely potent in flavor. Young Living has the best essential oils for cooking (food grade) – it is very IMPORTANT to note that you CANNOT use other brands of essential oils in cooking or internally – ONLY USE SUPERIOR QUALITY!

Learn more about how to cook with essential oils.

Young Living has two cookbooks with delicious recipes to help you create natural and healthy dishes using essential oils, see the cookbooks here (type cookbook into the search field).

The effects therapeutic* essential oils have on the mind and body are well documented. In one University study researchers in Japan found that diffusing certain aromas in an office environment dramatically improved mental accuracy and concentration.

  • Lemon resulted in 54 percent fewer errors
  • Jasmine 33 percent fewer errors
  • Lavender 20 percent fewer errors

When aromas were diffused during test taking, scores increased by as much as 50 percent! Aromatic essential oils have further been documented to improve concentration and mental acuity. In a University of Miami study researchers found that inhalation of Lavender essential oil increased beta waves in the brain, suggesting heightened relaxation. It also reduced depression and improved cognitive performance (Diego et al., 1998).

A 2001 Osaka Kyoiku University study found that therapeutic* Lavender reduced mental stress and increased alertness (Motomura et al., 2001).

Two studies showed that a diffused blend of lavender and orange essential oils reduced stress and anxiety in dentist waiting rooms, read the article.

Ambient odors of orange and lavender reduce anxiety and improve mood in a dental office 1: Physiol Behav. 2005 Sep 15;86(1-2):92-5. Lehrner J, Marwinski G, Lehr S, Johren P, Deecke L. University Clinic of Neurology, Medical University of Vienna, Austria.

How Much Does it Cost to Use Therapeutic-grade Essential Oils?

Lemon essential oil – 5 cents a drop

Jasmine essential oil – $1.15 a drop

Lavender essential oil – 11 cents a drop

Therapeutic-grade essential oils are used by the drop because they are are potent plant substances, rarely would you ever use more than 4 drops at any given time.

* Therapeutic essential oils are vastly different than those sold in health food stores. Therapeutic essential oils are distilled under intense scrutiny to maintain all of the healing herbs beneficial properties. Only 2% of all essential oils distilled in the world are therapeutic quality, Young Living Essential Oils makes up most of that 2 percent.

Note: When using a therapeutic quality essential oil keep in mind you will use much less, usually 1-4 drops is plenty in a topical application. When you consider that there are about 250 drops in a 15ml bottle, the savings is enormous!
