"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who'll decide where to go." ~ Dr. Seuss

It’s a lovely late summer evening, I have the windows open to enjoy the beautiful night air while working, and… Ugh! About 10 minutes ago I started getting a headache from the smell of a neighbor using a dryer sheet. My throat and eyes are feeling irritated and are burning too. Dryer sheets have got to be the nastiest things on the market… well, that’s not entirely true, there are far more toxic things sitting on store shelves for unsuspecting consumers to buy. But dryer sheets rank right up there with all those other toxic products for unsuspectinghopper’s. Laundry and dryer sheets

It is so easy to get scented clothing in the dryer and not expose everyone and the enviorment included, to those disgusting toxic chemicals.

Here’s what is required to make GREAT smelling non-toxic dryer sheets…

One bottle of your favorite superior quality essential oil, such as Young Living (you don’t want to buy anything less than superior because they contain toxic chemicals too) and a damp cloth (like an old wash cloth).

You add 2-4 drops of your chosen essential oil to the dampened washcloth and toss it in the dryer with your clothes.

That’s it! It literally takes 2 seconds to make your own non-toxic dryer sheets!

The environment will love you for it, your neighbors with open windows will love the scent – they’ll even get the benefits of aromatherapy, you’ll be eliminating the toxic chemicals that get absorbed through your skin while you’re wearing your clothing, the factory making the toxic dryer sheets will be putting fewer chemicals into the air and environment (hopefully they’ll even stop creating them because people will stop buying them!), and your clothes won’t have that nasty synthetic artificial scent that smells disgusting when you’re out and about in the world.

If it sound like I hate dryer sheets… you’re right, I do. With a passion. I cannot wait for the day when those disgusting things are no longer a consumer choice! Apologies to those of you who are not aware that there are better options… I’m just feeling sick to my stomach from the smell.

Good essential oil choices for making your own dryer sheets:

Lavender Essential Oil Thieves, Citrus Fresh, Peppermint, Lavender, Joy, Peace & Calming, Sacred Mountain, Sensation, Inner Child, Into the Future, Harmony, Gentle Baby, Believe, and Clarity.

For pennies, you could be using something that smells good and is good for all living things. I highly recommend using essential oils instead. And provided you use Young Living essential oils to make your own dryer sheets, you’re not going to stain your clothing – other brands put all kinds of extender oils in them which can stain clothing.

Additional Recommendation for Those Who are Going ‘Green’ / Eco-friendly

Try using 1-2 teaspoons of Thieves Household Cleaner in place of all laundry detergents and all laundry products – you’ll save money, won’t be polluting the environment, your clothes will smell better, and again you will not be absorbing toxic chemicals in laundry detergents. The Thieves Household Cleaner can also be used to replace every single cleaner currently in your home. Check it out and try some, you’ll be glad you did!

"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who'll decide where to go." ~ Dr. Seuss

The flu and cold season is coming upon us and it is time to get prepared for the sudden change in ones health.  Suggestion, don’t go to the store and buy the “goods” off the shelves, instead, sit comfortably at your computer and order your healthy protection products online.

Try these Thieves product tips around the house for protection from dust, mold, and unwanted microorganisms.

Kitchen
Wipe down counter tops, appliances, and cutting boards with diluted or full strength Thieves Household Cleaner. Add Thieves Household Cleaner to the bottom of the dishwasher as a degreaser or dish soap, or add it to a bucket of water for mopping floors.

Bathroom
Spray diluted Thieves Household Cleaner on shower walls, curtain, tub, sink, toilet, counter top, glass mirrors, and floor. Wipe off doorknobs and handles with Thieves Wipes. Mix Thieves Household Cleaner with Young Living’s Bath & Shower Gel Base for a cleansing, lathering liquid hand soap.

Laundry
Add Thieves Household Cleaner to the washing machine or use it as a spot treatment for clean, fragrant clothes. Spritz a washcloth with Thieves Household Cleaner or take a Thieves Wipe and add it to the dryer for fresh-smelling, anti-static laundry.

Bedroom

Spray diluted Thieves Household Cleaner or Thieves Spray on your mattress, sheets, and pillows for freshness and to eliminate dust mites.

Living Room
Spray diluted Thieves Household Cleaner on silk and live plants, spray or spot treat carpets, and spritz the air with Thieves Spray for a room deodorizer.

Office

Use Thieves Wipes to clean off your desk and other surfaces that are touched often, such as keyboard, mouse, phone, drawer handles, and doorknobs.

For the final touch, diffuse Thieves essential oil blend periodically throughout the day to purify and freshen the air, and to help prevent mold in your home and office.

Thieves Foaming Hand Soap is a balanced mix of ingredients that reduces the disruption of the skin’s natural moisture complex and leaves important lipids in place to maintain a proper moisture balance in the skin.

The essential oils in Thieves penetrate deep into the skin to act as a protective barrier long after you wash your hands.

Thieves Foaming Hand soap can be used by children and adults, including those with sensitive skin, for natural and effective cleansing.

Stay well for less and choose the 3-pack of Thieves Foaming Hand Soap, or purchase the 32 oz. Thieves Foaming Hand Soap Refill.

Don’t send your kids back-to-school with hand sanitizers that contain harmful chemicals -try Thieves Waterless Hand Purifier!

The Thieves Hand Purifier is an all-natural hand cleanser designed to clean and refresh the hands, promoting good hygiene without the use of water. Kids love the scent and easy to use take-along size.

Additional Tip: Thieves Waterless Hand Purifier also makes a terrific underarm deodorant – try a small dab and see for yourself!

The entire Thieves product line offers an array of safe household and personal care products that you can feel confident about using in your home. Because of the purifying ability of the essential oils contained in the Thieves essential oil blend, these products are effective without using harsh or synthetic chemicals like many other products on the market.

Curious about the other Thieves products? Ask me, I love to help others learn how they can live a truly natural lifestyle!

Common Sense Precautions When Using Essential Oils

• Young Living essential oils are highly concentrated. When applying topically, dilute one or two drops of essential oil in one tablespoon of pure vegetable oil. If any skin irritation results, add more carrier oil or discontinue use.

• Black Pepper, Clove, Cinnamon Bark, Marjoram, Thyme, Oregano, and Thieves oil are considered ‘hot’ spice oils, so test skin sensitivity first by applying a small amount on the inside of the arm with a little V-6 Massage Oil.

• Hot essential oils should always be used with a carrier oil, such as V-6.
Dilution with V-6: 2 drops essential oil to 1 TBSP V-6. Yes, you can always dilute your essential more if you like.

• Never dilute essential oils with water when being used topically. Always use V-6 or another pure vegetable oil.

• If essential oil gets into the eyes, use a drop of your carrier oil to dilute, do NOT use water.

• Never put essential oils into eyes, ear canal, or nose.

Studies are showing puberty is beginning as early as age 7!! How scary and sad.  Why is this so? Researchers are coming up with ideas of: the types of foods that are being consumed AND household products and personal care products. Da……….

It is a grossly unfortunate situation. It has happened, I believe, yes because of the bad, processed and fast foods that come from animals pumped up with hormones and fed grains that have been grown in chemically fertilized grounds. Plus the large percentage of household cleaning products, personal care products and supplements, that are laden with ingredients that are bodies understand are not beneficial for consumption, because of the chemicals and toxins that are in them.

A little girl age 12 told me (this is now summer of 2010) that girls in her school are having sex at age 8!! My mouth dropped to the floor. Our conversation went on for sometime after that.

Who is to blame? Does it matter? What matters is RIGHT NOW we all need to make the appropriate changes in our lives and to teach our children how to take a turn on the road they are currently being led down, and show them what to do to correct what has been wronged of them.  This way the change begins and they will be able to lead the future in a much healthier way.

Start today by:

  1. Buying or grow “real” organic vegetables and fruits.
  2. Purchase Grass Fed Meats
  3. Drink pure water and add food grade essential oils to it, such as lemon, orange, tangerine or grapefruit.
  4. Purchase personal care products free of toxins and chemicals.
  5. Purchase quality supplements.
  6. Purchase a “green” household cleaner that is safe to use, no need to wear gloves or a mask, and can replace ALL cleaners in your home.

All of this can be introduced into your home slowly.  You don’t need to “break the piggy bank” to purchase all at once.  (Read how to save money) The important decision is to begin to make these important changes and as you are, teach our children so they are aware of what you are doing for them and for future generations.

Our children have been dealt a stinky deck of cards, witho,t knowing or understanding and it is up to us to fix it.  I pray that whomever reads this article will make the right choices to make such an important difference for our children and the children of the future.

Please contact me with any comments and if you are in need of help in making these positive choices.

Stepping off the soap box now.

Good health, love and respect to you all.

There are many things we can do daily that conserve energy, reduce monthly expenses, and improve the quality of our lives. Some are:

1. Use ceiling fans! They use 1/10 of the electricity as A/C. My results: my electric bills have dropped $150 to $200 a month! This does keep the place comfortable most of the time, when I feel too hot I take a shower and use my Young Living essential oils. So for the couple of really hot days we have per month I am sure happy to make this trade-off and be saving hundreds of dollars every month!

2. Dry laundry on a clothesline – they will smell better too!

In 1998 The Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History mounted an exhibition titled “American Clothespins,” which consisted in part of displays of patent models of clothespins from as long ago as the 1850s. People came in droves. Those old wooden pegs inspired a huge outpouring of nostalgia. Then one day Barbara Janssen, the curator behind the exhibition, was walking through the museum and saw a boy turn to his father and ask, “What’s a clothespin, Dad?” It’s no wonder the child had never seen one before.

Nearly 60 percent of American homes are now equipped with automatic clothes dryers. It’s in the shadow of the dryer that quaint old clothespins and clothespin doll kits turn up on auction at eBay. The device has become so superfluous that Janssen herself, the leading expert on its evolution, has no use for it beyond its appeal as a collector’s item. She once purchased a pack with playful flower-shaped heads at Target, but not to hang garments with. When asked if she has a clothesline, she replies, “Of course not. I use a dryer.” And, let’s not forget about the clothesline to hold the laundry and clothespins!

3. Use the “Air Dry” setting on the dishwasher – better yet, hand-wash dishes and use a dish drain.

4. Use a pressure cooker rather than the stove. They’re fast and keep the food moist and more nutritious. I don’t recommend microwaves as they are not beneficial for our food or our health.

5. Use an outdoor grill. Cook meats, poultry, and veggies on a low and slow temp – they will taste better and they’ll be more juicy and tender. I do not recommend charcoal grills though as the chemicals from lighter fluid and from the charcoal get into food. For instance, get the least expensive cut of beef that’s 2 1/2 – 3 inches thick, braise it, add some chopped onions, 1/2 – 3/4 cup red wine, a bunch of carrots (chopped to about 1 inch in length), 6 cloves of fresh garlic chopped fine, fill the braising pan with water to cover the meat & carrots, put the pan in a 325 degree F oven for 4-5 hours (remove the lid for the last hour). Guaranteed to be the most tender, juicy, flavor-filled easiest meal you’ve had in decades! Serve with green salad and a baked potato (put the potatoes in the same oven, at 325 they will take 2 hours to bake). Drizzle the sauce over potatoes, and enjoy!

6. Wear light-weight and light colored clothing. A wet bandanna around the head or neck is also cooling to the body.

7. Let your hair “air-dry.” Hair dryers make our hair horribly dry and brittle, causing drying and split ends. I haven’t used a hair dryer in over 40 years and the texture of my hair is “silky” – I also only use Young Living’s shampoo & conditioners, no sodium lauryl sulfate or other poisons! They are extremely concentrated too, so a small amount goes a long way! For instance, two bottles of conditioner last me a year – NOW THAT’S Savings!!!

8. Keep your car cool while parked. Use one of the many window shades. Of course, having a light colored car will help significantly too.

9. Indoor lighting – I have BIG concerns over these compact fluorescent light bulbs. Sure they may save the home user some money but I think the serious risks far out-weigh the savings – by the way – do NOT throw them in the trash, they contain mercury! I don’t find them to be ‘Green’ at all – read my article to learn what they’re not telling us about them. It’s probably better that we get to bed early anyway, rather than stay up late with artificial lighting – our ancestors used to get about 18 hours of darkness during the winter in temperate climates and had better levels of melatonin than we have.

10. Become a “wholesale” member with Young Living! You will save 24% off retail pricing, you can buy what you want when you want, the only thing you have to do to maintain your wholesale pricing is have a total of 50PV (about $50 wholesale) worth of purchases a year – that’s almost nothing! You can save 10% to 20% more by joining the Essential Rewards program – buy whatever you want every month. A very cost-efficient way to get ‘Green’ and save a lot – it ends up being cheaper than buying generic brands in the store! Check it out, and let me know if you have any questions. Or, buy at wholesale pricing – and – make some money sharing Young Living!

11. Learn more about how to use essential oils! Being well saves hundreds or thousands in health care expenses! Get the Essential Oils Desk Reference, read the articles we post here at the Young Living Circle Blog, tune in to my monthly webinars, attend a Young Living class or event. Read 4 Ways to Stay Cool with Peppermint Essential Oil

12. Take advantage of the Young Living monthly specials! The freebies are fantastic! See them featured here at the beginning of each month to plan your shopping list.

13. Use Vinegar to kill weeds! Read my article to do it right: A Safe Weed Killer: do we kill ‘em or eat ‘em?

14. Start a garden! If you have horrible soil and are lazy or too busy to build sup your soil consider having a Straw Bale Garden or Container Garden! If you’re doing a container garden do NOT buy pots and things, get creative and re-use things such as old wood or plastic crates, metal or plastic dish pans, old colanders, etc.

15. Use cloth napkins instead of paper napkins or paper towels! They feel luxurious and are washed and reused!

16. Use a smaller trash can in the kitchen! This helps to eliminate stinky-rotten odors and keeps the insects down too. The garbage gets taken out more often creating a much more sanitary space to live in. How we ever became convinced that tall trash cans in the kitchen was a good idea I will never understand, it’s disgusting!

17. Compost! Here’s an article I wrote on my cheap compost bin to make: No Turning, No Fuss Compost Bin This is the best designed compost bin I’ve ever had.

18. Walk or ride a bike! Whenever we don’t use vehicle transportation it benefits us far more than we realize. My thoughts and a tip on How to Beat Summertime Heat – it’s been hot and I’m getting tired of enough not being done.

Lavender therapeutic-grade essential oil to “oilers” is considered the Swiss Army Knife or duct tape of essential oils because of its many helpful ways that may aide healing of our pets and ourselves.

LAVENDER: (Lavandula angustifolia) Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) has a fresh, sweet, floral, herbaceous aroma that is soothing and refreshing. Because it is the most versatile of all essential oils, no home should be without it. Lavender is an adaptogen, and therefore can assist the body when adapting to stress or imbalances. It is a great aid for relaxing and winding down before bedtime, yet has balancing properties that can also boost stamina and energy. Therapeutic-grade lavender is highly regarded for skin and beauty. It may be used to soothe and cleanse common cuts, bruises, and skin irritations. The French scientist René Gattefossé was among the first to discover these properties when he was severely burned in a laboratory explosion.

How to use: For dietary, aromatic or topical use. When using as a supplement, put one drop in a capsule or in 4 fl. oz. of rice or goat’s milk.

Possible skin sensitivity. If pregnant or under a doctor’s care, consult your physician. Dilution not required; suitable for all but the most sensitive skin. Generally safe for children over 2 years of age.

When you go to the store to buy cleaning products, do you take the time to read the labels? The majority of people don’t, and are unaware of all the very “nasty” ingredients that are in the products.  A really sad thing is that our “wonderful” “government” does not care enough about us to be sure that we have quality, healthy, safe products to buy.  What’s up with that mentality? Power, control, financial greed?

Conventional cleaners contain a variety of toxic chemicals that can harm your family’s health, and that is why you should choose a green cleaner.  However not all green cleaners are free of chemicals.  It is important to choose a cleaning product that has the “Green Seal”.

The next time you intend to replace your cleaners PLEASE take the time to read the labels.  If the label is showing no ingredients, that is very scary, put it back on the shelf!!  You may discover that many cleaning products may state a minute percentage of the ingredients, and then the other 90 some % may be listed as “other ingredients”.

Many products can contain ingredients that cause health risks linked to asthma, cancer, reproductive toxicity, hormone disruption, and other health effects.  Many of us use these products in our homes and where we work and have not thought about the consequences that may be arising from being exposed to the many toxins and chemicals “hidden” in cleaning products.

Our children and even our pets, have no control over what they are exposed to.  Inhaling the fumes can cause lung damage. Even walking on, crawling on or laying on a freshly mopped floor or shampooed carpets or furniture, could cause serious health conditions, such as skin problems, cancer or reproductive problems.

Cleaning might be a chore, but it doesn’t have to be a danger to ourselves, family, friends or our pets.  Why not go green when you clean? Your family’s health is worth it.

Don’t be fooled by labels — buy certified green products. Label claims aren’t always true, so if you are serious about making this important change, buy cleaning supplies certified by Green Seal or EcoLogo, which meet green standards.

Try natural alternatives: Experiment with non-toxic options, such as Young Livings Thieves Household Cleaner, which is certified by Green Seal.

Young Living’s Thieves Household Cleaner, is quite amazing. Not only is it non-toxic, but it contains the powerful germ fighting properties of the Young Living Thieves essential oil blend, ingredients from renewable plant and mineral sources, vegetable-based surfactants and is compliant with the Green Seal and EPA Design for Environment (DfE) standards, and transforms cleaning into a healing activity!

Thieves Household Cleaner will tackle most anything that needs to be cleaned. This product is very concentrated. The dilution ratios are on the label. I use Thieves Household Cleaner for cleaning: floors, windows, counter-tops, toilet bowls, sinks, tubs, tile, as an oven cleaner (you’ll need to use the heavy dilution for this), in place of carpet shampoo, in place of all laundry detergents and products (one capful per load, that’s it! I haven’t bought any laundry detergent or products in several years), and my car (upholstery and exterior).

Thieves Household Cleaner can be used throughout your house for:

  • One capful of Thieves® Cleaner = 1 tsp. Best if used with purified water (do not use water that contains chlorine). The GOAL is a Chemically Free Environment ~~
  • All purpose Thieves® Cleaner in a spray bottle:
  • 1 capful Thieves® Cleaner to 1 qt water
  • Light De-greasing: 1 capful Thieves® Cleaner to 3 3⁄4 cups of water
  • Medium De-greasing: 1 capful Thieves® Cleaner to 2 cups water D. Heavy De-greasing: 1 capful Thieves® Cleaner to 1 cup water
  • Window and glass cleaner: 1 capful Thieves® Cleaner to 5 quarts water or 1⁄4 teaspoon to a quart of water for spray bottles
  • Hand cleaner: 1⁄2 cup Thieves® Cleaner to 1/2 cup water
  • Dishwasher: 1 capful Thieves® Cleaner Pot and Pans: 1⁄2 capful of Thieves® Cleaner to 3 cups water
  • Floors: 1 capful Thieves® Cleaner to 6 1⁄4 cups water
  • Walls: 1 capful Thieves® Cleaner to a little less than 2 cups water
  • Fabrics: 1 capful Thieves® Cleaner to 2 cups water
  • Laundry: Depending on size of washer, use 1 to 2 capfuls of Thieves® Cleaner
  • Carpet: 1 capful Thieves® Cleaner to 6 1⁄4+ cups water

For a natural “green” alternative to the harsh scrubbing cleansers, try this Natural Thieves Soft Scrub in your kitchen and in your bathrooms:

Thieves Soft Scrub Recipe

1 cup Baking Soda

1 tablespoon Thieves Household Cleaner

In a small container add baking soda and Thieves cleaner, stir well. You can make larger batches by doubling the recipe.

Here is a interesting short video by Congressman Israel about cleaning up naturally.   What’s in your tile cleaner?

If you have any comments or questions, please feel free to contact me. I hope that you see the importance of making this change in your life to have “green” household products and how much better the change will be for your health.

Bed bugs are escalating because of global travel; the increase of homeless and underground communities; the popularity of “Flea” markets and 2nd-hand store merchandise. The escalation of bed bugs is alarming and people should be aware of the problem, how difficult it is to be rid of them, yet not be too discouraged, because there are natural, safe, chemical free ways to have those bed bugs be gone.

If you’re traveling or you’ve just recently purchased some used furniture, it’s a good idea to do an inspection for any mature bed bugs.  Bed bugs tend to be found in dwellings that are frequently used, like motels, hotels, apartments, dorms, care facilities, and most especially used furniture.

If you think you’re being bitten, it’s best to do a search of your home for these pests.  Bedding, clothes hampers, throw rugs, pillows and furniture are probably the first places you’ll want to search for bed bugs.

Vacuuming the mattress, using the “Bed Bug Spray” mentioned below, and applying a seal-able cover over the mattress should be sufficient.  Meanwhile, all clothes, linens, and bedding should be washed in HOT water, and the surrounding area vacuumed thoroughly.

Make sure that you dry the sheets and clothes in the dryer and not on a clothes line, as it is the long time in the dryer, not the washing machine, that will really ensure the bed bugs are dead.

Essential oil lovers prefer the Eco-friendly approach, and research shows that tree oils work best against parasites and menacing insects. Gary Young touts the praises of Palo Santo oil as the first choice for insect repellent. Palo Santo comes from an Ecuadoran tree which develops a resin to protect against infestation and it is from that resin that Young Living distills the Palo Santo oil.

Eucalyptus has been used historically for bed bugs, and Eucalyptus Blue is the first anti-viral Eucalyptus Oil . Native American Indians relied on pine needles and Cedarwood chips in their mattresses to ward off ticks and fleas.

Spray on Bed Between Linen Changes: Thieves Spray

Palo Santo Oil: Palo Santo (Bursera graveolens) comes from the same botanical family (Burseraceae) as frankincense, although it is found in South America rather than the Middle East. Like frankincense, Palo Santo is known as a spiritual oil, traditionally used by the Incas to purify and cleanse the spirit from negative energies. Even its Spanish name reflects how highly this oil is regarded: Palo Santo means “holy wood” or “sacred wood.” The resin forms only after the tree is down for 5 years, and this resin from which the oil is extracted, protects the tree from various parasites.*

Eucalyptus Blue Oil: Eucalyptus Blue has a fresh, invigorating aroma that supports normal breathing and soothes tense muscles. This essential oil is grown and harvested in Ecuador. This is the first form of Eucalyptus that is also anti-viral. This essential oil contains high levels of the powerful constituents eucalyptol and alpha-pinene, and follows in the same tradition as a repellent to insects.*

Cedarwood Oil: Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica) has a warm, balsamic, woody aroma. It is relaxing and soothing when used for massage, and has long been used as a beneficial ingredient in cosmetic preparations for oily skin.*

Purification® Oil Blend: Purification® is a powerful blend of Therapeutic Grade A Melaleuca (Tea Tree oil); Citronella, Lemongrass, Rosemary, Lavandin and Myrtle essential oils. Purification® can be used directly on the skin to cleanse and soothe insect bites, cuts, and scrapes. When diffused, it helps to purify and cleanse the air from environmental impurities including cigarette smoke and other disagreeable odors.*

Thieves Household Cleaner: Experience the wonder of Thieves® Household Cleaner, as tough stains and problem areas in your home become simple and easy to clean without using harsh or abrasive chemicals. Thieves Essential Oil is legendary as was proven at Weber State University to exhibit a kill rate of 99.96% against all airborne bacteria including MRSA, Staph, Strep, e-Coli and Toxic Black Mold. While bacteria can be dangerous, some industrial cleaners on the market pose an even larger threat to your health. Thieves Household Cleaner is a safe all-purpose “green” concentrate that can be used in every room in your home, without the harsh chemicals. Dilution ratios are listed on the label for your convenience.
