Using therapeutic grade essential oils can be a very rewarding experience. If you haven’t given them a try yet and are the type of person who is looking to have a ‘Green’ / eco-friendly home and lifestyle this can truely be the answer to what you’ve been looking for.

I began using essential oils about 25 years ago, I was tired of paying expensive prices for organic and all-natural household cleaning products and took the leap into essential oils upon hearing that you could use them for anything cleaning, to healing wounds and headaches, to staying alert, and staying well.

The necessary ingredient was to locate superior quality essential oils, and I’ll tell you, that was no easy feat 25 years ago! I searched high and low and ended up buying the best essential oils I could find. But it wouldn’t be until 1997 when I found precisely the superior quality I was looking for, Young Living Essential Oils (YLEO). Since that day, I have used only YLEO and I only recommend YLEO, regardless if I had a YLEO business or not. As a matter of fact, I only used and recommended them for several years before I even decided to have a YLEO business, which was about 5 years ago.

These essential oils are by far the best in the world. Only 2 percent of all essential oils in the world are of this superior quality. Young Living makes up most of that 2 percent. Unfortunately, that means 98 percent of the essential oils you come across are far lower quality, so don’t be fooled by the terms: 100% pure or organic, there are a million ways to ruin an essential oil and only one way to make them right. You can learn more about that here if you’re interested.

But, what I want to cover in this article is one particular collection of essential oils, the Essenttial 7 collection. This is a terrific assortment of 7 of the most popular essential oils. So, if you’re new to aromatherapy and essential oils, take a look at some of what can be achieved… when you step into the world of therapeutic grade essential oils… you are stepping into a brand world, a new way of seeing things and a new lifestyle.  Besides being the most eco–friendly way to go, the other thing I enjoy most is the sheer simplicity and ease in using essential oils for everything, making the switch is not only fun but it’s empowering! Try it and see for yourself!

Applications and Use of the 7 Essential Oils

  • Dietary Supplements: All of the single essential oils in this collection may be used as dietary supplements. Remember, all essential oils from YL are potent and superior quality, rarely will an adult use more than 2-6 drops of essential oil per “00″ capsule with a little olive oil added, or more than 1-2 drops added to a glass of water or milk. More on Immune System Tips.
  • Diffuse: All of the essential oils in this collection may by diffused – with the exception of PanAway. It’s not that PanAway would be harmful if diffused it’s more that it’s benefits would be wasted because this blend is designed to use topically for aches and pains of the body. Young Living has 5 diffusers to choose from. Using these diffusers will freshen the air eliminating the need for synthetic harmful air fresheners, provides the healthful benefits of aromatherapy (the simple act of inhaling therapeutic-grade essential oils, and helps to rid indoor air of germs and unpleasant. Never use a diffuser that diffuses by means of heat as heat or flame (as in candle diffusers) fractures the tiny molecules where all of the benefits are contained (more on heat and diffusing). For the curious, read…Viscosity of Essential Oils and How Quickly They’re Diffused and Smelly House to Aromatic Home
  • Topical Application: All of the oils can be applied to the Vita Flex points on the feet, added to bath water mixed with Young Living Bath & Shower Gel Base, applied topically or used with body and foot massage. More on Creating Your Home Spa and Massage and Bodywork.

There are three Young Living supplements that have been quite useful in addressing pain – BLM, Sulfurzyme and Coral Sea. When taken together, these supplements work synergistically to nourish and build the health of our muscoskeletal systems. BLM supplement

BLM

Formulated from the most potent, natural ingredients known, BLM protects mobility and the health of your Bones Ligaments and Muscles.

Key ingredients include: Collagen Type II, MSM, glucosamine sulfate, manganese citrate and the essential oils of Clove, Idaho Balsam Fir and Wintergreen.

Idaho Balsam Fir is one of the richest sources of limonene, a powerful antioxidant that may help ease stress and tension in joints and in the muscoskeletal system. More on BLM.

Sulfurzyme Sulfurzyme supplement

Sulfurzyme is a terrific supplement and it’s easy to see why it’s so popular – MSM, a key ingredient in Sulfurzyme, which has been proven to be extremely effective in relieving pain, especially tissue and joint pain. MSM is also a source of organic sulfur (not to be confused with sulfa), shown to reduce the inflammation of arthritis, relieve muscle spasms, improve blood flow and deliver biologically active sulfur to the joints.

Because MSM is not absorbed well unless it is taken with high levels of Vitamin C, amino acids and protein, Sulfurzyme includes Chinese wolfberries which contain all three!

How MSM works to control pain: When fluid pressure inside the cell is higher than the outside pressure, pain is experienced. The MSM found in Sulfurzyme equalizes fluid pressure by affecting the protein envelope of the cell so that water transfers freely in and out. More on Sulfurzyme.

Essential Oils Known for Helping Reduce Pain

To find the essential oils and supplements that can help relieve your pain, you may need to try a few different oils and combinations because every body is different. See 5 Tips for Getting the Most From Your Essential Oils (different methods of application).

  • Peppermint is one of the most effective essential oils for blocking pain. In one study that compared the effectiveness of Peppermint oil to acetaminophen for headache pain, Peppermint “efficiently alleviated tension-type headaches and… was a well tolerated and cost effective alternative to conventional therapies.” (Gobel et al., 1996). Peppermint inhibits smooth muscle contractions by blocking calcium influx into the muscle cells, thus blocking the transmission of pain signals. (Forster et al., 1980; Giachetti et al.,1988)
  • PanAway is well known by users for its pain-relieving properties. PanAway a blend of Wintergreen, Clove, Helichrysum and Peppermint. The eugenol in Clove has a long history of use for pain relief in dentistry and for rheumatism, arthritis and headaches.
  • Relieve It is a blend of Spruce, Black Pepper, Hyssop and Peppermint. Conifer oils such as Spruce have traditionally been used for topical relief of rheumatism and arthritis. Black Pepper relieves muscle aches, pain and stiffness by dilating blood vessels and bringing additional circulation to the area.

Other Essential Oils and Massage Oils Useful for Pain Discomforts

  • Copaiba (strong anti-inflammatory properties)
  • Motivation or Gentle Baby (I like these for muscle spasm/cramping)
  • Idaho Balsam Fir (anti-inflammatory properties)
  • Nutmeg (anti-inflammatory)
  • Palo Santo (this has worked well for my stiff neck)
  • Frankincense (helps muscles to relax, may not directly help feelings of pain though)
  • Ortho Ease and Ortho Sport are two wonderful massage oils to use before and after sports or exercise. Ortho Sport is the stronger of the two.
  • Cel-Lite Magic is also a massage oil that can be useful when lymph is sluggish.

Common Sense Precautions

  • Young Living essential oils are highly concentrated. When applying topically, dilute one or two drops of essential oil in one tablespoon of pure vegetable oil. If any skin irritation results, add more carrier oil or discontinue use.
  • Black Pepper, Clove, Cinnamon Bark, Marjoram, Thyme, Oregano, and Thieves oil are considered ‘hot’ spice oils, so test skin sensitivity first by applying a small amount on the inside of the arm with a little V-6 Massage Oil.
  • Hot essential oils should always be used with a carrier oil, such as V-6.
  • Dilution with V-6: 2 drops essential oil to 1 TBSP V-6. Yes, you can always dilute your essential more if you like.
  • Never dilute essential oils with water when being used topically. Always use V-6 or another pure vegetable oil.
  • If essential oil gets into the eyes, use a drop of your carrier oil to dilute, do NOT use water.

"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who'll decide where to go." ~ Dr. Seuss

Barbecues and camping is part of summertime fun. Sometimes our fun can result in discomfort from burns, scrapes, cuts, rashes or bug bites. It can turn into an ordeal if you are not prepared for the unknown. But fear not, you can get prepared easily,  without “breaking the bank” AND with natural products.

Here are ideas of what to do for first aide.

  • Lavender essential oil. Lavender  may be used for many first aide circumstances.  If you get a burn from the fire, or a sunburn from the too much sun, Lavender is the answer.  All you need to do is apply Lavender topically on the area of concern.
  • LavaDerm Cooling Mist. Most excellent to spray on sunburns, rashes and burns.  If you do get a burn, throughout the day, spray LavaDerm Cooling Mist and apply Lavender essential oil. It is best to first start doing this every half hour and as the day goes on, spread the time of application out.  You will be happy with the results.
  • Put a drop of Lavender oil on a bee sting or insect bite, this may help to stop itching and reduce swelling.
  • Lavender may help to stop a nosebleed. Put a drop of Lavender oil on a tissue and wrap it around a small chip of ice. Push the tissue covered ice chip up under the middle of the top lip to the base of the nose and hold as long as comfortable or until the bleeding stops (do not freeze the lip or gum).
  • Rub a drop of Lavender oil on chapped or sunburned lips.
  • Rub 2 to 4 drops of Lavender oil over the armpit area to act as a deodorant.
  • Put a drop of Lavender oil on a cold sore.
  • Drop Lavender oil on a cut to clean the wound, and may help to kill bacteria.
  • Purification essential oil blend may help to keep the mosquitoes from “sucking” your blood.  Drop a few drops in the palm of your hand and rub over any exposed skin and through your hair.  When I do this, the mosquitoes come buzzing to me, but take off before even “landing” on my skin.
  • PanAway is a fantastic essential oil blend for aches and pains.  If you have played too hard, you may feel relief by applying to the area, a few drops of PanAway with a few drops of pure olive oil.
  • Peppermint essential oil is a great oil to deter ants.  If you have an ant situation, put a drop or two of peppermint on a tissue or cloth and rub it on the area where the ants are coming. When they get to where they were going to cross and invade your territory, they will turn around and go the other way.
  • Put a drop of Peppermint oil in a gallon of water (a glass container).  This is very refreshing.
  • Should you get an upset stomach, perhaps from too many “smores”, you can either put 1 drop of peppermint in about a half cup of water and drink it down and then drink one to two more glasses of water.  Or take a drop of peppermint and rub it over your belly.  It will at first feel warm on your skin, but in a few seconds it will cool down.
  • If you are hot, take a drop of peppermint and put it on the back of your neck. Once again it will feel warm at first, but in a few seconds you should feel cooler.
  • PanAway, Peppermint or Lavender may help to relieve a head ache by applying a drop or two to the temples, forehead and back of neck.
  • Thieves is another important essential oil blend to have on hand.  Should one come down with a sore throat, take a drop or two of Thieves and a few drops of a carrier oil such as pure olive oil and apply it to the throat.  You can even put a drop or two of Thieves in a quarter cup of water, gargle, gargle, gargle and then swallow it all down.
  • If one gets a tooth ache, put a drop or two of Thieves in a quarter cup of water, gargle, gargle, gargle and then swallow it all down.
  • If someone age 10 or older has a fever apply about 5 drops of peppermint to the bottoms of each foot.  Wait 20 minutes and if the fever still needs to be reduced, apply the peppermint again.

If by accident one touches near their eye after using essential oils, they may feel discomfort.  Easy fix is to put a little bit of pure olive oil on the finger and rub it under the eye or in the tear duct area.  The discomfort should go away quickly. DO NOT apply water, as this will intensify the discomfort.

Pretty simple to be prepared, and all the above essential oils and LavaDerm Mist are totally natural.  Read more on First Aide Kits

  • Frankincense (helps muscles to relax)

I very rarely use one single essential oil for my aches and pains, I prefer using 2 or 3 at a time with 1 TBSP Cle-Lite Magic Massage Oil. I like the synergistic effect that occurs when they work together.

Ortho Ease and Ortho Sport are two wonderful massage oils to use before and after sports or exercise. Ortho Sport is the stronger of the two.

Cel-Lite Magic is also a massage oil that can be useful when lymph is sluggish.

"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who'll decide where to go." ~ Dr. Seuss

A popular way to use therapeutic essential oils to stay well during plane and vacation travel is to apply a couple drops of Thieves essential oils to the soles of your feet before leaving home – and – put several drops of Thieves essential oil or the blend R.C. on a cotton ball, place the cotton ball in a small baggie and every hour open the baggie and take several deep inhalations. The benefits of this are likely to help you not catch a cold or virus while traveling.

For air sickness, many rub a drop of either Peppermint or Ginger behind their ears. You will want to use a little carrier oil with either o these essential oils as they may be slightly irritating to delicate skin.

Prevent Motion Sickness Recipe

  • 2 drops Peppermint
  • 2 drops Ginger
  • 5 drops V-6 Massage Oil (a carrier oil)

Rub 6-10 drops of the above mixture on chest and stomach 1 hour before traveling.

Stomach Upsets, Stomach Cramping, Dysentery

Nothing can ruin a vacation than having to be near a toilet all of the time. There are a few therapeutic essential oil choices for bad bugs in the tummy. The most important thing to start doing a couple of weeks or month before leaving home is to get plenty of good bacteria in your gut – Life 5 is an excellent probiotic, 1-2 capsules daily are usually enough to get you in good shape. Young Living’s Life 5 is superior to all other acidolphilis supplements I’ve seen – I highly recommend it. Please check with authorities before leaving on your trip and see how many capsules you are allowed to bring (a full bottle may not be allowed, check first).

Essential Oils Known for Helping Stomach Upsets

The antibacterial, antiparasitic and antifungal properies of therapeutic essential oils can bring tremendous relief quickly. Those which would be the best for a travel First Aid kit are:

  • Thieves and Peppermint essential oils for dysentery. Mix 5 drops each with a little olive oil in a “00″ capsule (do not make these ahead of time as they could leak and make a mess). Please do NOT take other brands of essential oils internally, they are not superior quality and are not for internal use.
  • Di-Gize is a good choice for nausea and your average upset stomach. This essential oil blend can be applied topically to the abdomen with a little V-6 Massage Oil.

Essential Oil Travel First Aid Kit

Because I use essential oils for absolutely everything I would certainly be packing a smaller essential oil First Aid kit. Here is a list of the essential oils and products I would want and what I would use each for:

  1. Thieves essential oil - cleansing wounds, preventing skin infections, insect stings, for inhaling (especially good when around people who are sick/coughing, sneezing)
  2. Peppermint essential oil - achy, sore muscles, and headache pain, a drop in a glass of water for flavoring and enhanced digestion, inhale for alertness and congestion, several drops applied to soles of the feet to reduce fever, freshening stinky indoor/hotel air
  3. Lavender essential oil – skin issues and irritations, burns, scrapes, bites, deodorant, calming, can’t sleep
  4. Di-Gize essential oil - stomach upsets and food poisoning
  5. Lemon, Mountain Savory, Oregano essential oils - I combine 4 drops of  each essential oil in a “00″ capsule and add a little olive oil or V-6 and take twice a day when I find myself in a position of being prescribed an antibiotic – this is what I use in place of antibiotics when necessary. This for me is a lifesaver since I cannot take antibiotic drugs. I would make sure to bring some empty “00″ capsules so I can make this blend if necessary. Do NOT use other brands of essential oils in this way, internally, as they are adulterated and not for internal use. Because these 3 essential oils are highly antibacterial and antiviral, I wouldn’t hesitate to take 2 capsules a day if I felt a cold or flu bug coming on!
  6. LavaDerm Cooling Mist Spray – skin irritations, sunburn, cuts, scrapes
  7. Thieves Ultra Toothpaste – this is the best toothpaste ever, and it’s edible! It can also be used as an underarm deodorant.
  8. Life 5 supplement - maintaining good stomach/gut bacteria, great if you’ve eatten bad food

All of the above are the absolute minimum I would want to have on hand when doing any kind of traveling, hiking or camping.

If I had the space and could take more, I would also include…

  • Thieves Waterless Hand Purifier - this is great for keeping cold and flu-free, no chemicals so it’s great for kids too! I would also use it as an antibacterial if I got a cut, scrape, mild skin infection.
  • Palo Santo essential oil – to repel insects, and topically for sore achy muscles
  • Melrose essential oil - topically for skin fungus, wound cleaning/healing
  • Stress Away essential oil Roll-On – alleviate stress, and as a perfume (scent is lovely)
  • R.C. essential oil - inhale or topically on chest for congestion/respiratory, terrific for MRSA infection situations

Each person and family are different, please see this list to get ideas of which essential oils and products would be right for you and your family when traveling.

And remember… place your order 1-2 weeks before you plan to go away!

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) Essential Oil

This is the most versatile essential oil and is often used to cleanse and soothe minor burns, cuts, and other skin irritations. In addition, Lavender essential oil has a relaxing scent and balancing properties that help calm the mind and body. Therapeutic-grade Lavender is an excellent addition to an all-natural First Aid kit!

Lavender’s Supporting Qualities:

The French scientist René Gattefossé was the first to discover lavender’s ability to promote tissue regeneration and speed wound healing when he severely burned his arm in a laboratory accident. Today, lavender is one of the few essential oils to still be listed in the British Pharmacopoeia.

Medical Properties of Therapeutic-grade Lavender: Antiseptic, antifungal, analgesic, antitumoral, anticonvulsant, vasodilating, relaxant, anti-inflammatory, helps reduce blood fat/cholesterol, combats excess sebum on skin.

Practical Uses for Lavender Essential Oil: Respiratory infections, high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, menstrual problems/PMS, skin conditions (perinial repair, acne, eczema, psoriasis, scarring stretch marks), burns, sunburn, hair loss, insomnia, nervous tension.

Lavender Essential Oil in Aromatherapy

Because the limbic system is directly connected to the parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone balance, therapeutic-grade essential oils such as Lavender can have profound physiological and psychological effects. Our sense of smell is the only one of our five senses directly linked to the limbic lobe of the brain, our emotional control center.

The fragrance if calming, relaxing, balancing physically and emotionally – read Orange and Lavender for stress and anxiety – two studies.

Therapeutic Lavender Essential Oil is Emotionally Balancing:

The uplifting effects of Lavender were confirmed by a British study that showed that lavender added to bathwater reduced negative thoughts about the future. [1]

A drop of Lavender on your pillow may lead to a relaxing night’s sleep. Japanese researchers have noted that many brands of lavender essential oil are adulterated [2] as such you will not obtain the same results and you can unknowingly cause yourself harm by not choosing a therapeutic essential oil.

Lavender Essential Oil for Physical Wellness

  • Cleanses and soothes cuts, bruises and skin irritations (see Lavender and Sunburn)
  • Especially soothing to heat-stressed skin

Ways to Use YL Lavender Essential Oil:

Since Young Living Lavender essential oil is of superior quality it can be used in a number of ways: diffused, as a dietary supplement, aromatic or topical.

Lavender Used Topically in a Massage: Use 4-6 drops of YL Lavender with 1 tablespoon V-6 Massage Oil Base as your carrier oil.

Lavender in the Bath: In a small dish mix 4 drops Lavender essential oil with 1 cu Epsom Salts or Sea Salt, stir well, add to running bath water. To make a Lavender Milk Bath, simply replace the salt with full fat milk.

Diffusing Lavender: Simply follow instructions for the type of diffuser you’re using. Note: I recommend that you NEVER use a lamp diffuser or any type of diffuser that uses heat as a means to disperse essential oil as the heat breaks the delicate molecules which is where the benefits of an essential oil are located. More on Diffusers and Diffusing. YL has 5 very nice diffusers, none of which use heat to disperse your essential oil.

Lavender as a Dietary Supplement: When used as a supplement (please do not use other brands the same way we use YL oils as it is not safe to do so), put one drop in a “00″ capsule or in 4 fl. oz. of rice or goat’s milk.

Cooking with Lavender: Yes, YL Lavender essential oil is food-grade and can be added to recipes where you would enjoy having a lavender flavor. In most recipes a single drop of Lavender is plenty – remember these essential oils are not diluted – so use them sparingly. Read How to Use Essential Oils in Cooking for more details and tips.

"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who'll decide where to go." ~ Dr. Seuss

Our horse had a huge abscess in his foot, which blew out a chunk of hoof; leaving a section missing, a huge crack, and deep infected internal pocket.  He was completely lame, unable to go clockwise at all in any gait. I treated this by first flushing it with peroxide and it literally smoked!  His ankle and hoof were hot to the touch and the ankle was swollen and hot.

I went back the next day with my essential oils.  I scrubbed the frog with Thieves Hand Soap, rinsed, irrigated with peroxide which still smoked, then injected my Clove, Oregano and Thieves mixture into the crack then wrapped it with gauze to hold in any oil that leaked out.

When I went back the next day, the ankle was perfect; he was no longer favoring his injured foot. It was no longer hot, or even remotely warm.  Again I injected peroxide… no smoke.  I injected my essential oil combo and let it be.

What an awesome, no antibiotic, fast, healthy, alternative treatment to an infection!  My lame horse of 36 hours previous was now cantering away, and happy to do it!

The farrier was out 3 days later… his frog was completely healed with no signs of any internal abscess, not foot tender at all.  The barn owner calls it “the voodoo that I do”!

Our horse also had thrush on his hooves in the early spring, as I’m sure did most horses.  I scrubbed his feet one time with the Thieves foaming hand soap, the next day and ever since there has been no signs of Thrush.

So far I’ve had unbelievable success treating and curing his two wounds.

Finally, an alternative, chemical free way to treat him successfully using only Young Living Essential Oils.

I never expected these oils to work nearly as impressively as they did, and I myself am almost dumbfounded by their success.  I wanted to let you know about my personal and unbelievable success stories.  I am using many varieties of oils for many varieties of issues.  If you should ever come across someone who is looking for an organic, chemical free, antibiotic free  approach to treatment of an issue, especially an infection or wound of any type where you might be sitting on the fence as to whether or not it needs an antibiotic, please feel free to contact me or point them to my article.  I’m always looking for people to share my knowledge & personal success stories with.  So far I’ve had huge success with his 2 wounds. I’ve also used some calming oils on him when he was a little hot under the collar in the spring.  These products support healing & wellness more effectively than anything else I’ve ever used!”
