According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, more then one third of America’s adults are obese, which totals out to around 72 million people. A 2003-2004 test done by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), indicated that an estimated 17 percent of children and adolescents ages (2-19) years are overweight. What’s worse, is that children who are overweight are more likely to struggle with weight problems for the rest of their lives. When one considers all of the fat free, dieting fads, and weight loss supplements out there, the reason so many suffer from this is truly a mystery. Or is it? A thought to ponder is that the weight loss industry is a very big industry, and unfortunately if you lose weight permanently, the industry looses a customer! The flash diets are for the most part dangerous, and fat free foods are not only dangerous and bad for your body and brain, but they are a hoax.
It is important to realize that any truly good health program is not quick. The process in reprogramming the body takes time, and is like peeling an onion. Health authorities teach that no matter what is ailing you, there are 3 basic levels to getting well, cleansing, nourishing, and maintaining. And, there are steps to the levels which differ slightly depending on what your individual problem is!
The reason some people (not all) have trouble loosing weight and keeping it off, is they see their health problem as more of an emotionally devastating problem, rather then a serious health problem that should be dealt with. Therefore, the incentive to change their lifestyle is based on emotions that come and go. A true weight loss program is not a diet, it is a lifestyle change, an ongoing process of in with the good and out with the bad. A permanent change as this takes time, patience and determination. Whether a persons weight is from hormonal imbalance, or just plain overeating, a truly healthy lifestyle change can in time correct this according to leading health experts.
One of the problems we are faced with today that add to difficulty loosing weight and becoming healthy is that of petrochemicals. Petrochemicals are toxic chemicals we are encounter on a daily basis. They are in cleaning agents, bath and body products, the air, even our food and water. Xenoextrogens are a by product of these dangerous chemicals, and they throw our bodies own hormones out of balance and can cause so many health problems, including weight gain. By doing periodic body detoxes (cleansing), and by taking certain supplements such as antioxidants (NingXia Red and Longevity are two Young Living products that contain high amounts of antioxidants) we may assist the body in eliminating these dangerous substances. Of course it is imperative to replace the toxic petrochemical sources we use everyday with natural alternatives, which Young Living does provide (see bath and body care links at the bottom of the page). For more on petrochemicals you can read my article on Petrochemicals, Free Radicals, and Essential oils, (link at the bottom of the page).
Did you know that it is becoming a largely recognized fact that emotions play a role in weight problems? I have a book entitled Feelings Buried Alive Never Die by Karol K. Truman, it is a great book, you can find it at www.abundanthealth4u.com. In it is a chart that gives possible emotional reasons that may be linked to specific ailments. It lists the following as emotional reasons for weight gain;
Feelings of insecurity
Feelings of self-rejection
Wanting to protect the body
Seeking love and fulfillment
Attempting to fulfill the self
Feelings are being stuffed inside
Unexpressed, mis-perceived & inappropriate feelings
Resistance to forgiving
Hidden anger
With that said, these are pretty common feelings which may explain why so many people have a problem with weight gain! When dealing with health issues holistically, the point is to take things from a whole body perspective, which includes the mind. Interestingly enough, when we are being formed in the womb, there is a point when our brains and our colon are connected, then they separate, one becomes the mind and the other the brain (1). Anyways, this is a brief example of why these are the two areas we begin with when we start out on our path to healing. In essence, our minds make us who we are!
At the School of Natural Healing, we were also taught that negative emotions often times get stored in the liver. I have personally seen where people going on a liver cleanse for the first time become very emotional about things that happened years prior. Interestingly enough, there are books written on how a toxic liver can be linked to many health issues, including obesity. (Note-it is not advised to attempt cleaning the liver until one has thoroughly cleaned their colon via a colon cleanse).
In dealing with feelings, and cleansing the mind/body/soul; I have done a lot of research into essential oils/aromatherapy over the past years. Presently I am reading an 800 plus page book by Dr. David Stewart about the chemistry of essential oils. According to his findings, they truly have the ability to help reprogram DNA (2). If you had a weight problem as a child E.O.’s may come even more in handy for this reason. He also speaks of their ability to cleanse emotions from the body. Integrating essential oils into your program for spiritual and physical cleans
ing and support will make the whole process more pleasant in so many ways. The Feelings Collection may be extremely beneficial for this purpose of emotional clearing. The Oils in this collection include; Harmony, Forgiveness, Inner Child, Present Time, Release, and Valor. In addition to this, positive affirmations, such as telling yourself you are beautiful and healthy, may help you tremendously in the healing process.
More essential oil blends that may help in cleansing the mind/body/and soul of negative emotions above include; Sacred Mountain, Grounding, SARA (especially these ones in cases where the individual was abused), Trauma Life, Hope, Joy, Surrender, Believe, Peace and Calming, Stress Away, Magnify Your Purpose, Envision, and Into the Future. There is a link at the bottom of the page for more information on how essential oils impact the mind.

Below is a basic overview of the steps many holistic practitioners use in cleansing and nourishing the body. Keep in mind the outline is only suggestions, most come from sources such as The Essential Oils Desk Reference, some come from Seasonal Detox by Carrie L’Esperance, and quite a few come from literature provided by the School of Natural Healing. I have made the outline with Young Living products as I believe from research and experience that their incorporation of essential oils and enzymes in their supplements make their products cutting edge. Enzymes help digest food, and taken between meals enzymes and essential oils may help to digest the undigested fat, proteins and carbohydrates in the body/blood. Essential oils have even been found to dissolve the protective coating around cellulite fat cells (the coating of which has been responsible for the impossibility to get rid of cellulite in the past) (2).
According to the Essential Oils Desk Reference, some Therapeutic grade essential oils that may be helpful in assisting weight loss include Peppermint, jasmine absolute, ylang ylang, and vanilla absolute (found in the new roll-on Stress Away), and some more essential oil blends are Joy, Citrus Fresh, and Juva Cleanse. Another Young Living Product listed in the EODR as a key in weight loss for women is hormone treatments using natural progesterone ( Y.L.’s Progessence Cream is a natural progesterone source). Hormone imbalances in women have been linked to weight gain particularly around the hips and thighs.
It may be highly beneficial to go on some cleansing juice fasts during these cleanses; in fact it is recommended by some health professionals to start cleanses out with one. Dr. Christopher’s 3 day cleanse is one of the most pleasant to start out with in my opinion because it is more gentle, and one doesn’t usually get too hungry on it. To view the 3 Day Cleanse see my article on the Importance of a Body Detox Part II (Link will also be provided at the bottom of this article as well). I like to start a juice fast after having been on a colon cleanse for a few days so that the process is more gradual!
A colon cleanse is considered by the best holistic practitioners to be the first step in any and all programs and detoxes, even it you don’t think you need it. Some people who have struggled with constipation for years have taken a colon support formula for years before they could go regularly with out one. There are few colon cleanses I recommend; Young Livings is a good one because it contains Casgara Segrada, an herb that helps to strengthen the colon rather then do all the work for it; in addition to this it also contains essential oils which may help digest fat, carbs, and proteins that your body is not digesting.
The Cleansing overview with suggested products is as follows;
I. The Mind
A. Essential oils to cleanse the mind on an emotional and physical (cellular) level
B. Essential Fatty Acids (Omega Blue from Young Living for example)
II. Colon support suggestions-for two weeks before attempting additional cleansing is suggested (Young Livings Comfortone, ICP)
A. Bentonite Clay 1 tsp in cup of water (draws toxins from entire body)
C. Young Living’s Digest & Cleanse for additional colon support
After this, one may move on to cleansing the liver. Authorities suggest detoxing the liver for a week- it is important that the colon is still kept clean though because the liver empties out into the colon! Any backing up can make a person very sick!
III. Liver Support suggestions
A. Morning Liver Flushes (Some just use a glass of carrot or grape juice with 2 tablespoons cold pressed, extra virgin olive oil added)
B. Digestion support such as Y.L.’s Digest and Cleanse, or other digestion support such as tummy teas
C. Liver support, 3x a day, (such as Y.L.’s Juva Power)
D. Y.L.’s essential oil Juva Cleanse may be beneficial for normal liver support
E. Enzymes, (Young Living provides Detoxyzyme which is an enzyme supplement). Between meals may be of best benefit for cleansing purposes.
After a week of this, one may move on to the kidneys.
IV. Kidney Support Suggestions (continue 1 week)
A. Morning Kidney Support Drink(Authorities and even doctors now are talking about the power of citrus-lemons and limes- to assist the kidneys. A recipe handed down to my class from Dr. Schultze consisted of a glass of water with 1 lemon and 1 lime squeezed into it, a pinch of Cayenne Pepper, and a tincture such as Young Livings K&B.
B. Kidney assistance herbs; Young Livings K&B contains herbs that have been used for centuries in kidney support, and can be made into a tea with Parsley, Uva-ursi, and/or Dandelion herbs and used 3 x a day.
Only after the colon, kidneys, and liver have been cleaned should one go on to tackle the blood. This is because the blood filter’s through the kidneys and liver, and if they are not clean a backing up can occur and make a person feel very sick.
V. Blood Support Suggestions (authorities suggest to continue 1 week)
A. Young Livings Rehemogen contains herbs that support this system. You can take it as recommended.
B. Enzymes (Young Living enzymes include Detoxyzyme or Essentialzyme) between meals
Now, if one wishes, there are other cleanses that exist which may be of benefit. These include;
VI. Heavy Metal’s Detox
A. herbs such as cilantro, bugleweed, and yellow dock have been taught to assist the body in removing heavy metals such as aluminum, copper, etc…
B. A Cilantro Salad dressing can be made by blending 1 bunch of cilantro with 1 cup pecans, and enough olive oil to make it blend. You may salt it if you wish!
C. Flax seed oil
D. Bentonite clay, 1 teaspoon in 1 cup water. Dr Schultz taught that this pulls hundreds of toxins, including heavy metals from the body.
VII. Parasite cleanse (may be more effective if done on a juice fast)
A. I love Young Livings Parafree! Use as directed
B. For increased results, a tea of wormwood, black walnut, and clove can be consumed upon waking in the morning (but it tastes terrible)
VII. Skin cleansing (The skin is the body’s largest organ!)
A. Cleanse regularly from day one with
1. Dry skin brushing
2. Hydrotherapy (done in the shower)
3. Use only natural bath and body products such as provided by Young Living, do not use commercial ones as they are loaded with petrochemicals that will only add to health problems.
B. Massage with essential oils
1. Cellite Magic
2. Citrus Fresh and Ledum may be beneficial for fatty areas
(Legally I am required to state that the overview above is simply an outline put together from research, it is not meant to diagnose, treat, prevent, or cure disease, seek the advice of your M.D. or N.D. in the case of serious illness).
Now we come to the subject of nourishing the body. Without the right nutrients, the body goes into starvation mode. Many people who are overweight are actually malnourished, believe it or not. This has been discovered as one reason why some people are overweight!
I. First and foremost, nourish the Mind
A. Eating well will do wonders for the mind
1. For example, Things like Multi Greens and Omega Blue feeds the body and brain, as does taking things like glyconutrients (NingXia Red) and enzymes (Essentialzyme).
B. Essential oils of Highest Potential, Peace and Calming, Motivation, Believe, Hope, and Transformation may help one to cope as they transition their lifestyle
II. Nourish the Colon
A. ICP and Comfortone support regular bowel function
1. One day of constipation can begin a downward spiral again
B. Probiotics (Young Livings Life 5)
C. Young Livings Digest and Cleanse or Inner Defense may keep bad bugs associated with weight gain and immune disorders from taking over
II. Targeted Areas
A. This could include the adrenals, thyroid, pancreas, etc… contact me for product assistance with this-
III. Whole Body Supplementation
A. Whole Food Supplements such as Young Livings True source are more readily used by the body.
B. MultiGreens
IV. Omega Blue (essential fatty acids help process fat and improve brain function among other things)
V. Enzymes (Essentialzyme)
A. Help digest fats, proteins and carbohydrates- can take with meals and in-between) enzymes are imperative to maintaining
VI. Glyconutrients (essential sugars such as from NingXia Red) are also important
For a more detailed description of why these nutrients are key, see my articles on Core Nutrition, Parts I, II, and II
What To Eat;
A note on the best foods for weight loss or any health building program; a good rule of thumb is try to make everything from scratch! Read labels, if you cannot pronounce a bunch of stuff in the product, you probably should stay away from it. Don’t each products with a bunch of chemicals in them. Stay away from fat free and diet stuff and margarine!!!! For a good PDF on why margarine is bad for you Click Here. Limiting sugar is always a good idea, and if you have to have it try to get unprocessed sugar, like the raw cane sugars and more natural kinds. Organic half and half or cream is waaaaaay better for you then coffee mate’s and that kind of stuff, and if you really want to make sure the half and half and cream is not going to stick to your body don’t be afraid to find raw (if you are afraid of raw check out the Weston A Price foundations fascinating documents on this subject).
Instead of putting yourself on a diet, consider it as though you are replacing bad foods with more pure ones. If you use a replacement theory it will be a lot easier. Rather then the fad diet shakes (which many have sugar, that’s a dead give away that the manufacture is insuring a way that you will keep needing their products) go for more natural, nourishing meal replacements such as Young Livings delicious Balance Complete, and Pure Protein Complete. A wonderful cookbook to get you started on the right path is Nourishing Traditions, by Sally Fallon. It won’t take long to see that eating healthy doesn’t mean eating foods that don’t taste good!
