Don’t Wait Until Your House Has Mold To Do Something About It! How to Prevent Toxic Mold!

As with anything, it is a lot cheaper and easier to prevent toxic mold than it is to do mold remediation and costly home repairs. Being proactive against toxic mold = a lot more money in your bank account!

3 Tips and What I do to ‘Prevent’ Toxic Mold n My House

1. If the roof, door or window begins to leak – repair it as soon as possible!

It is cheaper to repair a small problem than it is to repair a large one. Perform regular home maintenance and repair things before thy become expensive repairs.

I am always amazed by how many homes I drive past that are in disrepair. This is a toxic mold problem just waiting to happen!

Additional Tip: A house also happens to be our greatest asset in terms of our net worth… don’t let the most valuable thing you own waste away, this ‘your’ money!

2. Diffuse Thieves or Purification essential oils once a week! Thieves essential oil and cold-air nebulizer diffuser

You will need:

A cold-air nebulizer type diffuser (see image) – no other type of diffuser will address the prevention of mold, period.

And a couple bottles of either Thieves or Purification essential oil. Depending upon the size of your house, one bottle should last 1-3 months!

Run your diffuser for 15-30 minutes a day – or – for 6 hours a week.

You will also find: that your house smells better and that you and your family members will have fewer colds and flu = fewer missed days of work and school = more money in your bank account.

3. Clean your home with Thieves Household Cleaner!

This environmentally friendly all-purpose household cleaner contains Thieves essential oil. Use it in place of any and all other cleaners. The dilution ratio’s are on the label and simply mix up the dilution for the type of cleaning you will be doing.

Thieves Household Cleaner cleans: floors, windows, walls, carpets, laundry, sinks, tubs, toilets, cars, fabric, upholstery, dishes, and more! It IS the ONLY cleaner you will need in your home!

Thieves Household Cleaner is the only cleaner and detergent replacement I’ve used for the past 10 years! This stuff works!

That’s it. That’s all that needs to be done to prevent toxic mold from ruining your home, your health, and your finances!

Additional Tip: do NOT clean with bleach. The EPA does not recommend using bleach for cleaning mold any longer because it has been found that mold will start growing back after 24 hours of using bleach.

The cost of preventing mold is maybe $5-$10 a month depending on the size of your home and if you buy at wholesale prices. Which is far cheaper than the tens of thousands it costs to remove toxic mold once it occurs. And of course, no price can be put on the disruption it makes on your life.

Preventing toxic mold can save you in health care costs, should your body contact the toxic mold (which does happen)… well, the savings over a life time would be somewhere in the hundreds of thousands! Last summer I spoke to a mother of 2 children who almost died because of toxic mold in her house (the entire family ended up in the hospital); she now has brain damage, is in a wheel chair, and is on $700 worth of meds a month for the rest of her life! That did NOT have to happen!

Be PROACTIVE against mold in the home – it’s much cheaper to prevent it than it is to pay the consequences later!

By the way, I would recommend those three tips to you even if I weren’t a Young Living distributor. As a matter of fact, I was recommending them long before I became a distributor. I’ve been preventing mold for nearly 25 years, I’ve only been a distributor for 5 of those years. Ts works and it’s cheap compared to the alternative.

Cold-air Nebulizer Diffusing and Viscosity of Essential Oils

Different essential oils have different viscosity, or thickness, and therefore diffuse at different speeds. A good reason for diffusing therapeutic-grade essential oils is that research indicates when superior quality essential oils are diffused they can increase atmospheric oxygen and provide negative ions, which inhibits bacterial growth in the air. This suggests that essential oils could play a very important role in air purification and neutralizing odors (not masking odors). Because of their ionizing action, essential oils have the ability to break down some potentially harmful chemicals and render them nontoxic. For instance, Lemon essential oil is terrific at breaking down products that are derived from petro-chemicals; simply putting several drops on a cotton ball can remove the gummy stuff left behind after you peel off a price tag, or motor grease from hands. Therapeutic-grade Lemon essential oil will also dissolve a Styrofoam cup.

For the purposes of this article, we’ll just stick with the rate at which an essential oil will diffuse in a cold-air nebulizer essential oil diffuser (shown in the image). This type of diffuser is the most versatile, easy to use, lightweight, easy to set up. Because it only uses only air as a means of dispersing the essential oil there is no worry about heat or flame, which can ruin the healthful benefits of your therapeutic essential oil. This type of diffuser puts a micro-fine mist of essential oil into the air where it can come into direct contact with unwanted odors and germs – it’s a terrific way to disinfect the air in the home or office.

Thicker Viscosity Essential Oils

Essential Oil Blends: Valor, Joy, Harmony, Endo Flex, Awaken, 3 Wise Men

Single Essential Oils: Sandalwood, Myrrh, Patchouli

These essential oils have a much thicker viscosity and therefore diffuse more slowly and create a bit more noise in the diffuser.

For example, to diffuse one 15ml bottle of Valor could take up to 48 hours or longer with the pump running continuously on high volume, which is unnecessary and wastes a lot of essential oil.

Thinner Viscosity Essential Oils

Essential Oil Blends: Citrus Fresh, Peace and Calming, R.C., Purification, Abundance, ImmuPower

Single Essential Oils: Lavender, Orange and Lemon

Are thinner oils and diffuse very quickly.

For example, a 15ml bottle of Citrus Fresh will diffuse within eight hours. Again, running your diffuser non-stop would be wasteful.

On the other hand, an essential oil blend such as Thieves, one 15 ml bottle of Thieves will last about 24 hours of non-stop running if the air pump on your diffuser is a more powerful 6 watt diffuser. In this case, using a 6 watt pump on your nebulizer diffuser  and running it non-stop is actually desireable when there is a mold issue and you’re creating a shock treatment to eliminate mold from your home. Diffusing Essential Oils to Prevent and Eliminate Mold

Timers

Yes, your cold-air diffuser can be put on a light timer. This is a terrific option to use so that when you walk in the door from work your house will be all fresh, and ready for you. These timers are the same type you would find at a hardware store, the kind you would use for your lamps.

Additionally, let’s say you have some congestion from a cold, the diffuser can also be set to run for 15 minutes once or twice a night while you’re sleeping to help you feel more comfortable.

What NOT to do With Your Diffuser

Never add water  or a carrier oil to your essential oils or thin them with another substance as this will clog the jets and perhaps nullify the desired results. Vegetable or petroleum based oils will clog your diffuser so avoid using those too.

Many people want to feel better, we may have high cholesterol, diabetes, depression, hormonal imbalance, joint discomfort, breathing problems. Most of these issues may be helped by loosing weight. By loosing excess weight our stress levels will decrease, we will be happier and our emotional imbalances will be in better control.  What better gift to our selves and our families. Helping ourselves to have better health will also help our families health to be better, because what we eat, they too will hopefully eat too.

Our weight loss can be accomplished by making smart choices and changes, by exercising and drinking plenty of water.  I have learned many different “techniques” for weight loss and one that I have learned fairly recently is that our body truly only recognizes whole foods.  What does that mean? What are whole foods? Simply put, whole food is “real” food. Not man made, processed, non fat, sugar free.  Try this out for just a week and see if you see a significant weight loss.

  1. Eat protein within 30 minutes after getting up.
  2. Eat something (whole food) every 2 hours, even if it is just a bite of an apple.
  3. Drink water throughout the day, up to 8 – 8 ounce glasses. It is refreshing to add a few drops of Lemon, Grapefruit, Tangerine or many other different essential oils to your water.
  4. Exercise at least 3 times a week.
  5. Only eat whole foods. Real butter, whole milk, whole wheat bread, etc. (Not white flour products, as this is processed.)
  6. In other words, nothing processed, like; “I Can’t Believe It’s Butter” (how true, because its not!!). Our bodies do not recognize non fat. Non fat does not come naturally, sugar free, is only loaded with toxins and chemicals, like aspartame–very BAD nasty chemicals!! All detrimental to us. Our bodies reject them.
  7. When we eat whole food our body accepts this, because it is a naturally recognizable substance and our muscle cells then understand to accept the food that has been broken down and the muscle cells will then help to fight fat cells.  When you put unreal food in your body, then the fat cells are just multiplying.  So try it for a week and let me know what you find.

About 75 percent of U.S. households use air fresheners, according to NRDC. The air freshener industry is now worth over $1.72 billion in the United States, a 50-percent increase over 2003.

It is estimated that 95% of chemicals used in fragrances are synthetic compounds derived from petroleum (petroleum is a liquid mixture of hydrocarbons that is present in certain rock strata, extracted and refined to produce fuels including gasoline, kerosene, and diesel oil).

It is estimated that more than 3000 different chemicals are used in fragrance production.

Even most essential oils are not entirely natural; the aromatherapy oils sold in stores, even those sold in health food stores. Harsh chemicals are used by most companies in their extraction process. Chemical solvents such as hexane and heptanes are used to extract the maximum amount of essential oil from the plant, so it is important to buy superior quality oils from a source you can trust – such as Young Living Essential Oils.

Why do air fresheners make us sick?

Air fresheners coat nasal passages (more about the olfactory system) with an oil film and/or reduce your ability to smell odors. These products often contain Formaldehyde – a highly toxic material that can irritate eyes, nose, throat, and skin. High exposure can cause nausea, headaches, nosebleeds, dizziness, memory loss and shortness of breath.

The main toxin in room fresheners, urinal cakes, moth balls, paints, household cleaning products, and vehicle exhaust fumes is 1,4 dichlorobenzene (1,4 DCB).

A recent National Institute of Environmental Health Services (NIEHS) study published in Environmental Health Perspectives showed that among 953 adults 1,4 DCB was linked to a reduction in lung function.

Check your household products, read the labels to see if they contain 1,4 DCB. If they do, refuse to use and buy them!

Even air fresheners marketed as “all-natural” or “unscented” contain hazardous chemicals. The term “all-natural” has come to mean absolutely nothing, the only thing that is required to label a product as “All-Natural” is that at one point in time, the ingredient came from nature. Even products labeled as “Organic” do not have to be completely organic.

The thing that disgusts me most is the manipulation in advertising promoting their product as being better because it contains essential oils, this is so misleading to consumers. home-diffuser-box

What consumers really need to know is this…

Only 2% of ALL essential oils distilled in the entire world are completely pure of toxic chemicals and considered high quality. This means that the chances of a company using a truly pure essential oil is absolutely zero! No company is going to use a higher quality essential oil in their product because of the expense. Their market targets people who don’t know the difference. At the end of the day, all they’re concerned with is how much money ends up in ‘their’ pocket – they’re not at all concerned with your health or the health of your kids and pets. And believe me, the health problems these products cause is costing us all a fortune in health care. It’s unbelievable the chemicals they’re ‘allowed’ to use, and they are NEVER tested, nor are they required to reveal their full list of ingredients.

What many consumers do not know is how simple and inexpensive it is to make their own products; whether it’s making their own air fresheners, their own cleaning products, or their own personal care products.

The most valuable piece of information I can share with you is this…

I can guarantee you that I spend less money every month on air fresheners, household cleaning products, and personal care products than someone who buys off-brand (cheap) products. Plus, I save tons of money over time than those folks do because I’m not getting sick from using the products they have in their homes, health care costs are FAR more expensive than making smart choices that prevent you from being exposed daily to products that are making you sick over time.

From Ask Dr. Weil: Air Fresheners – are they bad for my health?

Q: I use air fresheners in my home, but have been told I shouldn’t. Are they bad for my health?

A: It certainly looks like they are. Recent research strongly suggests that they raise your risk of a number of pulmonary diseases. Last year researchers found that being exposed to chemicals from air fresheners as little as once a week may increase your odds of developing asthma symptoms by 71 percent. And a 2006 study showed that people with high blood levels of the chemical 1,4 dichlorobenzene commonly found in air fresheners – were more likely to experience a decline in lung function.

Other studies point to a cancer link. University of California, Berkeley, researchers determined that, when used in small, poorly ventilated rooms, some air fresheners emit pollutants that create high levels of formaldehyde, a carcinogen shown to cause cancer in animals and respiratory irritation in humans.

Last year, the Natural Resources Defense Council evaluated 14 air fresheners, 12 of which had varying amounts of phthalates, chemicals that may affect fertility, cause cancer, and trigger developmental abnormalities in infants. The NRDC and other environmental groups filed a petition calling for all air freshener-related products to be tested for consumer safety and regulated by the government.

I recommend freshening the air by opening windows and eliminating the sources of unpleasant odors. If you enjoy aromas indoors, opt for natural items such as a lavender plant, potted herbs, or a bouquet of fresh flowers.

History of Diffusing

The term “aromatherapy” was coined by the French chemist Ren-Maurice Gattefoss in the early 1920s. Gattefoss spent his life devoted to essential oils and their healing properties. However, for more than 6,000 years prior to Gattefoss, aromatherapy had been used by the Egyptians, Romans, and the Greeks. Imhotep, an Egyptian physician, suggested that oils be used for massage, bathing, and embalming the dead. Hippocrates, known as the father of modern medicine, used aromatic smoke and vapors to purge Athens of the plague.

Today, much has been theorized regarding the effects of diffusing essential oils, which can be considered similar to the aromatic smoke used by Hippocrates. It has been hypothesized that when essential oils are diffused, they can increase atmospheric oxygen by releasing oxygenating molecules into the air. Not only can essential oils increase oxygen in the atmosphere, they also increase the body’s ability to transport oxygen into the cells. The lipid-soluble structure of essential oils allows them to easily penetrate the cell membranes of the nose and enter into the bloodstream. Once in the bloodstream, the oils can help transport oxygen and nutrients into the cells.

How to Make Your Own Spray Air Freshener

What you will need:

  • 14 oz. spray bottle (get the ones that are slightly more expensive, they last a lot longer than the cheap spray bottles)
  • Essential Oils (I only use and recommend Young Living Essential Oils)
  • Water

Fill spray bottle 7/8 of the way full with water, add 20-30 drops of your chosen essential oil blend or combination of singles). Give the spray bottle a little shake and spray into the air; I like to hold the bottle high, towards the ceiling, when I spritz. I also like to give surfaces (door knobs, wall light switches, bathroom and kitchen surfaces) a little spray too as this will help kill the germs that can spread cold and flu.

Good Essential Oil choices for homemade air freshener spray or Home Diffuser:

  • Thieves (well known for it’s germ and mold killing abilities, this is an extremely popular choice, smells clean!)
  • Citrus Fresh (a blend of citrus oils, nice fresh scent)
  • Christmas Spirit (this blend is very nice during winter, a warm pine scent)

Ten Ways to Create a Natural, Green Clean Home and Life

green-thieves-cleanerAccording to the Environmental Working Group, adults have up to 455 chemicals polluting their bodies. What is even worse, babies are being born with up to 300 chemicals in their little bodies. Sadly, these chemicals have been linked to ADHD, to autism, childhood cancer, infertility, learning deficits, and birth defects. Believe it or not, these chemicals are coming from the most obvious of all places. Drinking water, in-organic food, cleaning products, bath and body products just to name a few. In my article, Petrochemicals, Free Radicals, and Essential Oils, I wrote of how chemical products can cause disease by contaminating the body and throwing the endocrine system out of balance. Once upon a time, words like “green” “eco-friendly” and “natural lifestyle” were only important to hippies and health nuts. Times are changing though, and as people become more educated the “green” and “all-natural” wave continues to grow.

Until the laws are changed and chemicals that have not been assessed for safety are removed from products, it only makes sense to quit using, and promoting these products. Below are 10 easy steps we can all take in creating a safer, natural, and green clean home!

  1. Don’t use chemical air fresheners, such as sprays, plug-in’s and so on. They contain toxic chemicals that can wreak havoc on the brain, aggravate allergies, as well as other things (see links below). Aromatherapy with therapeutic grade oils is a much wiser, and actually a beneficial choice!   2. You can effectively clean your whole home with Vinegar, Baking Soda, and a little Thieves Household Cleaner and essential oils. I have gotten my floors sparkling clean before with just water and one drop of Purification essential oil from Young Living. Thieves household cleaner can be used from everything to sanitizing your bathroom and kitchen to dusting your furniture.
  3. Make your own chemical free homemade laundry detergent and fabric softener!
  4. Do you have a regular mattress? Did you know that normal mattresses are soaked in chemicals that emit fumes, especially when you sleep on them and that these chemicals are found in newborn babies umbilical cords and mothers milk? Read more here.
  5. Get rid of chemical bath and body products!!!! The skin is the largest organ, and absorbs everything you put on it. Would you eat your shampoo, body lotion, and hair products?   6. Get rid of plastics. Don’t drink out of them, and especially don’t put hot food in them! Putting hot food in plastic containers causes them to leak petrochemicals into your food. Glass jars are a safe alternative, and they provide a clear view of what’s inside!
  7. Go organic! It is best to find food from a local grower, if possible. This way you will insure freshness of the food, and have a better idea of what you are getting in addition to supporting your local community. Don’t get food from other countries as other countries still use products like DDT and pesticides that are illegal in the U.S.A. Foods grown in other countries are also subjected to sprays as they cross the border into America.
  8. When it comes time to repaint, or purchase new furniture,  get non toxic paint, and furniture that is painted with non-toxic paint. Even though paints do not contain lead anymore, they still contain chemicals which can emit fumes for years after they are applied. If all else fails, and you must use regular paint, the fumes can be drastically improved upon and even possibly neutralized by adding a bottle of Purification essential oil (or other therapeutic grade oil) per gallon of paint. We have found that Purification works the best, and can help eliminate headache symptoms that are sometimes acquired while applying paints.   9. Use Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) in place of bleach to whiten and brighten! It can be used in small amounts in laundry, and for sinks. It is not toxic, but be careful, it irritates the skin temporarily. It can also be used to disinfect cutting boards and other kitchen items without leaving a residue that would get onto food and alter taste.
  10. To de-mineralize hard water build up, try vinegar! I like to put some vinegar in a spray bottle along with a few drops of essential oils to help with the smell. It make take a few treatments of spraying the vinegar on and letting it sit for a few minutes, and it might take a little scrubbing with a brush, but it works and it is not harmful for you to breathe and touch like the harsh chemical cleaners.
