If you are a reader of the Bible, you know that essential oils are mentioned many times throughout.  The Bible has more than 500 references to at least 33 species of essential oils and/or the herbs from which they are distilled.  All of the oils used by the people of Bible times are still used today, although not always for the same purposes.

FRANKINCENSE

Is mentioned in the Bible 22 times, the most familiar of which is regarding the gifts to the baby Jesus from the wise men. Mary and Joseph would have known, without any explanation from the wise men that it was customary to anoint newborn sons of kings and priests with the oil of frankincense, which they no doubt did for their newborn child.

Also known as “olibanum,” or “Oil from Lebanon” the name frankincense is derived from the Medieval French word for “real incense.” Frankincense is considered the “holy anointing oil” in the Middle East and has been used in religious ceremonies for thousands of years. It was well known during the time of Christ for its anointing and healing powers and was one of the gifts given to Christ at His birth.

“Used to treat every conceivable ill known to man,” frankincense was valued more than gold during ancient times, and only those with great wealth and abundance possessed it. It is mentioned in one of the oldest known medical records, Ebers Papyrus (dating from sixteenth century BC) an ancient Egyptian list of 877 prescriptions and recipes.

Matthew 2:11—“And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshiped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.”

Frankincense was considered a cure-all by the people of Biblical times and for those who could afford it, it was applied to cuts, bruises, and wounds of all kinds, as well as a inhaled and taken internally. Frankincense comes from a tree requiring a very unique desert climate. It grows only in North Africa and the Southern Arabian peninsula. The oil received by Jesus as a baby came from the same areas where Young Living gets it’s Frankincense today.

Not only was frankincense used as a holy anointing oil, it was also one of the ingredients in the holy incense of the Hebrews (Exodus 30:34-37) burned perpetually in their tabernacles for more than a thousand years, through the time of Christ. Today one can still experience the fragrance of Frankincense in Catholic Churches where it has been customarily diffused for more than 2000 years.

While it has been used to treat every conceivable ill known to man for thousands of years, modern experience has shown that the fragrance of frankincense is an antidepressant and helps in overcoming stress and despair, as well as supporting the immune system. It has also been found helpful with allergies, insect and snake bites, bronchitis, cancer, pneumonia, diphtheria, headaches, hemorrhaging, high blood pressure, typhoid, and warts.

Frankincense has always been a popular fragrance for perfumes and lotions, from ancient times to the present. In fact, it is found in several modern products, including Youth Dew® (Estee Lauder) and the all-time best-selling after-shave lotion, Old Spice® (Shulton).

Egyptian tradition says that “Frankincense is good for everything from gout to a broken head” or in other words “good from head to toe”.  If in doubt, use Frankincense.

Uses of Frankincense:

  1. Put a drop on an insect bite to help reduce swelling and speed healing.*
  2. Apply 1-2 drops on temples and/or back of neck to help improve concentration.*
  3. Apply 1-3 drops on each foot to help strengthen the immune system.*
  4. Dilute 1 drop in 1tsp. honey or 4 oz. rice milk and ingest daily for health maintenance.*
  5. Dilute 50/50 with V-6 Mixing Oil and apply to a blistered area 3-5 times daily as needed.*
  6. Diffuse or inhale from the bottle to help with mood elevation.*
  7. Dilute 50/50 with V-6 Mixing Oil and massage 6-9 drops onto each foot at night to help with sore feet.*
  8. Apply 1-3 drops to shoulders stomach and bottoms of feet to help with low mood induced insomnia.*
  9. Apply 1-3 drops on nails and at base of nails, 3 times per week to help strengthen brittle or weak nails.*
  10. Rub a few drops on stretch marks 2 times a day.*

Grief and sorrow come to all of us at sometime in our lives.  They are not times we care to experience or to wish upon others, but it is inevitable that we will experience awful times of sorrow and grief. To be able to get through these powerful feelings and emotions can be very difficult and even more difficult for others.

5 Ways to deal with grief or sorrow:

  1. Talk to family or friends. Reach out to them, by calling them. It can be difficult to pick up the phone, but it is important for you to be able to have someone to talk to.  If you don’t have someone, call a church or a hospital to find out about support groups.  Yes, it is easier to be alone, and that is OK, but not all of the time.  We do need someone to talk with, or to listen to.
  2. Read self help books or inspirational books that relate to what you are going through. Or listen to them on tape, if you are having a hard time focusing. Listening to the words can be a great help too.  Sometimes this can be a much easier way to take in the helpful words.  We may be able to comprehend better than when we read, because when we are in a deep place of grief it can be difficult to focus on words.
  3. Getting out in nature, going for walks, or even for drives to pretty places, can help us to reflect on the beauty around us and remind us of other blessings in our lives. Remember if you are able to go for walks to breath in the fresh air.  Fresh air is invigorating, intoxicating and down right good for our body and well being.
  4. Aromatherapy is natural way of achieving optimal emotional and physical health. The fragrance of an essential oil can directly affect everything from your emotional state to your lifespan. Thus, a therapeutic essential oil can affect our feelings and thoughts because smell is our most emotional sense. Scent stimulates nerves to fire in the emotional center of the brain, but it also stimulates the master gland to release hormones. Hormones affect the fight/flight response, as well as digestion and heart rate. In this way, essential oils can affect us in many ways all at once, just through their fragrance.  Aromatherapy is a very positive way that may help to heal from emotional pain.*
  5. Raindrop Technique utilizing emotional Young Living therapeutic-grade essential oils, could also be an excellent way to move to healing from grief and sorrow.  Raindrop Technique is a simple practice that can be learned and may be very beneficial for emotional healing and physical healing. (Read my article on Raindrop Technique for Mind, Body and Soul)*

To achieve optimal emotional well being does not come without work. A few years ago I purchased a copy of Dr. Russell Blaylock’s video, “Behavior and Nutrition.” What I found most helpful is the way he explains ‘how’ our food choices make very profound differences in our health and our behavior. Nutrition in general is an area that I’ve been interested in since I was 10 years old, it wasn’t until I was 16 that I became aware just how much a difference it makes. Since then, it has been a hobby of mine to stay up to speed on the ‘good’ science available (yes, there is a lot of bad science out there) and perhaps even more importantly… what’s happening in the food industry.

Over the years I have noticed that my health was quite different than most, in particular compared to my peers. I wasn’t getting the same illnesses as they were and I still don’t. I know this is due to the choices I’ve made… even if those around me thought I was kooky or extreme. I am the only one I’ve personally known who has never had a disease, a condition, and have never been on any type of drug either over-the-counter or pharmaceutical.

Here are some of the things I have completely stood by:

  • If it’s low-cal, low fat, no-cal: I avoid it like the plague
  • I want most of my food to be ‘whole’: not processed, not pasteurized, not reduced calorie, or enriched
  • Buy local and in season and/or grow my own either in a garden or container garden
  • NO Fluoride!!! No fluoride in my drinking water, my toothpaste, or in my mouthwash. I use and recommend Thieves Ultra Toothpaste and Thieves Mouthwash; they are the ONLY ones I have ever found to be edible and extremely effective, I’ve never found anything that even comes remotely close to these.
  • No store bought meats… even if they are organic! All of the meat I buy MUST be from animals that are completely pasture and grass raised. and I get my fish from Vital Choice Seafood (they too are the best).

I don’t even want eggs from chickens that have been fed ‘organic’ feed for the fact that a chickens diet is suppose to contain insects, seeds, grasses, and weeds that are found in nature outdoors, not an organic vegetarian diet (whoever thought that was a good idea has got to be nuts). A chicken whose diet consists of little more than organic feed is a nutritionally deficient chicken which produces nutritionally deficient eggs.

Twenty years ago I suspected that the organic label was hogwash, turns out I suspected correctly. The organic industry has changed so significantly that the word ‘organic’ has come to mean virtually nothing these days (since the USDA took over and literally changed the criteria and standards in the industry).

My 6 Easy Tips for Eliminating Horrible Stuff

  • Shop mindfully: this means not making a selection simply because it appears convenient
  • Get rid of toxic household and personal care products: I make my own with essential oils, it’s super easy, convenient, smells wonderful and completely eliminates my exposure to products used daily. Here are some of the super easy recipes you too can make with essential oils – it’s amazing how easy it is and how good it is for us and the environment. Note: do NOT use any ol’ brand of essential oil though as they are loaded with chemicals and solvents – you do not want to defeat the purpose!
  • Avoid so-called convenience foods, particularly those you toss in the microwave
  • When you do cook, cook extra so you can have leftovers or save them in the freezer (this is the homemade equivalent of fast food) – My Real Veggie Burger Recipe and more of my favorite recipes
  • Give up something you currently do that really doesn’t serve you well, the time spent doing such things gives you time to do something that’s better for you
  • Read the label: it’s appalling what’s in products and foods today and turning a blind-eye to the ingredients list is like playing with fire, it’s only a matter of time before the house burns down, our bodies.

I personally have found that applying the above has saved me an enormous amount in health care costs and I’m well almost all of the time.

Here is the video by Russell Blaylock, MD on “Nutrition and Health”

A summary of the effects of nutrition on behavior:

Brain Allergies

  • Food allergies associated with neurological effects
  • Immune factors interact with the brain
  • Lethargy, stupor, disorientation, paranoia, delusions, hallucinations, agitation, rage, panic attacks, criminal behavior and seizures

Allergies found in all people with Schizophrenia

  • 88% were allergic to wheat
  • 60% were allergic to cow’s milk
  • 50% allergic to corn
  • 100% were allergic to gliadin or gluten

In one study, when 50% of the group of Schizophrenic’s were taken off of gliadin and gluten almost all of them returned to normal. It was also observed that when they got back on gliadin or gluten, even a very small amount of it, they were fully Schizophrenic again and had to be hospitalized.

Food Cravings

  • Food allergies, very often, make you crave the food you are allergic to
  • Food allergies and hypoglycemia are linked (adrenal effect)

Leading Foods for Allergies

  • Milk (juvenile offenders drink the most milk)
  • Wheat
  • Corn
  • Coffee
  • Eggs
  • Potato
  • Peanuts
  • Soy (is the leader in food allergies and is in most foods) Myth: soy prevents breast or prostrate cancer. Fact: there is evidence that shows soy WILL make breast cancer grow faster.

Research Showing a Connection Between Nutritional Status and Brain Function

  • Animals fed lard (animal fat) had impaired spatial learning and temporal memory
  • Newer studies found impaired ability to learn and remember with saturated animal fats
  • Omega 3 fats improved depression, memory retention and thinking, and have even been shown to improve Schizophrenia (that’s because the brain uses a lot of Omega 3s for its membrane). DHA makes up about 50% of all the membranes in the nervous system. Thousands of studies have shown a connection between DHA and intake of Omega 3s in the eyes.
  • Animals eating foods grown with pesticides, industrial chemicals and herbicides – these become stored in ‘their’ body fat.
  • The brain is more than 60% fat, having the highest fat content of any organ, and retains chemicals for a lifetime. Chemicals in the brain can have tremendous effects n neurological function.

Research

  • When Omega 3s are low, level of DHA, in neurons it correlated with violent behavior. Alcoholism causes a fall of DHA level in the brain.
  • When body DHA is low and MSG levels are high it dramatically increases violent activity
  • Lead  is known to significantly increase violent behavior, suicide and juvenile delinquency. A study done in 380,000 school children found that even a slight increase in lead levels produced horrendous rates of violent crime and arrests. Lead, in very small amounts can have profound implications in terms of brain function.

Factors Affecting Brain Function

All of these play a role in brain toxicity and your behavior. In the list below, these are not minor things; they are ‘key’

Regular Diet

  • Fats: your ratio of Omega 6s to Omega 3s (they should be about equal). Omega 6s are corn, peanut oils (your cooking type oils). Omega 3s are from wild cold water fish and Omega Blue supplement and from livestock raised entirely free-range (note: organic is NOT the same as grass range). When these are not in balance we are terribly altering brain function.
  • Carbohydrates
  • Proteins
  • Fruits and vegetables

Antioxidant Intake

  • Vitamins
  • Minerals
  • Flavonoids
  • Thiols

Protection for the brain and every cell in the body.

Balance of Hormones

  • Testosterone
  • Estrogen
  • Thiroid

Artificial estrogen is brain toxic, natural estrogen is brain protective. When you see studies saying there was increased stroke, dementia with estrogen replacement, they were using artificial estrogen’s which produce about half a dozen different brain neurotoxin’s. So, when you get Premorin from the doctor, you’re getting a brain toxin.

Thyroid function makes a big difference, particularly in pregnant women. Every woman who is thinking of becoming pregnant should get a thyroid test done because it is shown that even marginal deficiencies in thyroid in the mother can result in permanent deficiencies in the babies brain that are un-repairable.

Environmental Toxins

  • Aluminum
  • Mercury
  • Lead
  • Cadmium
  • Fluoride
  • MSG
  • Aspartame
  • Pesticides
  • Herbicides
  • Industrial Solvents
  • Food Dyes
  • Excessive Vaccination

Over immunization causes the brain to over function, this is why we are seeing a rise in ADD and ADHD, the immune reaction from the vaccine goes on for years, nonstop. The brain becomes inflamed and this is what causes the brain dis-function, this is shown repeatedly in every kind of study you can imagine.

In this list, there are synergistic effects. Every one of us are exposed to these things daily, and some in very high levels. Reducing these can have very significant effects on the body and on our health. Taking even small steps and reducing exposure, will over time, produce beneficial results.

Happiness can be a feeling that is in the shadows of many peoples emotions.  At times when we feel depressed, angry or uncertain about life, sadness takes over. When this feeling has overtaken us it is hard to even want to think about changing our feeling, as we are so consumed with our negative thoughts, and that is all we think about.  This can be very hard to turn around and when these feelings are upon us, we don’t even care much about making them go away.

What’s important for anyone who may be feeling this way is to realize that it is possible to feel better and what it takes is change of thought and also the remarkable therapeutic power of plants and nature’s healing powers through therapeutic grade essential oils.

Here are steps toward feeling happy:

  1. Take a moment to recognize your feelings.
  2. Believe you can change your feelings to happiness and positive energy.
  3. Choose a Young Living Essential oil for what ever emotion you are feeling at the moment.

What do I mean by “Choose a Young Living Essential oil for what ever emotion you are feeling at the moment.”?

  1. If you are feeling sad, you may want to choose Joy oil blend.
  2. If you are feeling anger, you may want to choose Forgiveness or Release oil blend.
  3. If you are feeling stress, you may want to choose Peace & Calming blend.
  4. If you are feeling lousy but can’t seem to pin point your emotion, you may want to choose Lavender or Harmony oil blend.
  5. If you are feeling unmotivated, you may want to choose Motivation oil blend.

These are some choices of oils that may help in times when you are feeling despair for whatever reason. They could be enhanced with topping off with the essential oil blend of Believe.

The next step after determining your choice of essential oil is what to do with it, how to use it so that you are able to begin to feel better.

All of the Young Living essential oils I have mentioned above, may be applied topically, by inhalation or by diffusing them.

Foot application:

The first place I would suggest applying the essential oil is to the bottoms of your feet. For instance, if you wake up in the morning feeling sad or not in a very good mood, before you put your shoes on for the day, take a moment to apply 1-2 drops of Joy oil to the bottoms of your feet.  With the remainder of the scent that is on your hands, cup your hands over your nose and take several nice long deep inhalations. (Keep hands away from touching the skin on your face.)

When essential oils are applied to the bottoms of the feet the essential oil passes easily through our skin and cell membranes within 20 minutes.

According to researcher Jean Valnet, M.D., an essential oil that is directly applied to the skin can pass into the bloodstream and diffuse throughout the tissues in 20 minutes or less [all the more reason why you want to know your essential oil is the purest, as are Young Living essential oils.  Read more on quality]

Diffusing

You can also put 10-15 drops of Joy oil in a diffuser to diffuse in your environment.  The bonus by doing this is not only may it help you to feel more joyful, but anyone else that is around may feel better too.

When diffusing essential oils the essential oil is in the air, and you are breathing in the tiny molecules of essential oil.  This effect may help to balance your moods.

In a cold air nebulizer diffuser start by diffusing your Young Living essential oils for 15-30 minutes, one to four times a day for normal situations. Place the nebulizer diffuser higher in the room (a shelf, bar, or fireplace mantle are good choices) so that the essential oil mist has a longer distance to fall through the air. (Read more on diffusing)

The natural properties found in Young Living essential oils produce a soothing, uplifting effect on the mind and emotions. When an essential oil containing the optimum level of therapeutic constituents is diffused, the result fosters a sense of emotional balance and well being.

When the aroma of essential oils is inhaled, the scent travels to the reticular system of the brain stem where emotions and memories are connected. This enables essential oils to improve emotional wellness in many ways.

Aromatherapy, or essential oils, are helpful in elevating and balancing moods. Nature has many answers for problems and balancing out emotions is one of them. Therapeutic grade essential oils carry the “life force” of the plant and they offer the plant’s vibrancy and normalizing effects.

The fragrance of an essential oil can directly affect everything from your emotional state to your lifespan. Essential oils work differently than any other natural substance.

Recap

  1. Recognize your feelings.
  2. Believe you can change your feelings.
  3. Choose a Young Living Essential oil.
  4. Apply essential oil to the bottoms of your feet.
  5. Inhale essential oil scent from hands.
  6. Diffuse essential oils.
  7. Feel the difference.

If you need any help in deciding which oils to order PLEASE feel free to contact me as I would be very happy to help you towards understanding how it is possible to feel happier and to be blessed with greater well being.

Our emotions need improvements, and often times it may be difficult understanding how  to go about changing how negative emotions are effecting our overall mood. We are all familiar with making home improvements when they are needed.  What about emotional improvements? Emotional home improvement, this is another way of looking at, and understanding our emotions.

Emotions are triggered by many situations, from someones actions towards us, the media, loss, stress, the weather, disappointment, trauma and the list goes on. We can feel hurt, sad, angry, lonely, fearful, ungrateful, worried, confused, or unloved. So what are some easy ways to turn our emotions around?

Here are a few steps that may help in getting started recognizing a negative, unhealthy emotion. Once we begin to recognize them, the next step is understanding the type of emotion, so that we can determine how to help begin to feel better and more positive.

  1. Recognizing a negative emotion.
  2. Realizing our emotions are indeed in need of improvement.
  3. Taking time to turn negative emotions into positive emotions.
  4. Understanding that each emotion may need a different approach in correcting it.

The next step towards this new positive change, is with Young Living therapeutic grade essential oils. Young Living essential oils give you the results and true therapy your body needs. Essential oils are the only substance on earth to support the entire body, and once a therapeutic-grade essential oil is applied to the body, whether by inhalation, ingestion, or topical application to the skin, the essential oil enters the bloodstream. The essential oil is then metabolized and chemically changed quite rapidly, but during this period a multitude of therapeutic effects are possible. The effect we are looking for here is to correct our emotions.

There are many emotions to deal with, but I am going to write about what to do for sadness.  Young Living has several different essential oils that may help to alleviate the feeling of sadness and the one that I most often use and find lifts my spirits is Joy.

This is what I do with Joy:

  • Apply 2-3 drops to the bottoms of each of my feet.
  • Inhale the scent from my hands, by cupping my hands over my nose. Taking several long inhalations.
  • Diffuse Joy essential oil blend in my diffuser throughout the day for 15 minuets at a time. Not only are my spirits lifted, but the aroma in the room is a beautiful floral scent.

I find that the effects of Joy oil lifting my spirits is within seconds and I am always thankful that I am feeling better and thrilled with the amazing quickness that essential oils help.

Diffusing or directly inhaling essential oils can have an immediate positive impact on mood.  Olfaction is the only sense that can have direct effects on the limbic region of the brain.

Essential oils operate by interacting with the cells of the ‘olfactory‘ system, where upon reaching a membrane inside and at the very top of the nose after inhalation. The interaction of natural fragrant molecules on the olfactory membrane initiates a nerve signal that can quickly trigger various parts of the brain to respond – invoking a memory, a feeling, calming, alertness, reduced anxiety, or simply the perception of a scent.

Here are other essential oils which may be beneficial in help alleviating sadness:

  1. Cedarwood
  2. Lemon
  3. Jasmine
  4. Frankincense
  5. Peppermint
  6. Valor blend
  7. Hope blend

Clinical studies at the Department of Psychiatry at the Mie University of Medicine showed that lemon not only reduced depression but reduced stress when inhales.(1)

Young Living essential oils are a much better alternative therapy for many situations. Isn’t it better knowing that you are being helped with a natural substance, a quality essential oil from Young Living, rather then taking medications that can also cause adverse effects and more problems.

Are you ready to now make your emotional “home” improvements? This is the right place for you to accomplish a healthier, happier feeling from the inside out.  I look forward to hearing from you, please do not hesitate to contact me, so that I can help you to choose the essential oil that may help you to feel better emotionally.

Therapeutic grapefruit essential oil has a lovely scent, great taste, and many benefits. In this article Dr. David Stewart writes about the origins of this amazing fruit and how to use grapefruit essential oil. Young Living grapefruit essential oil is therapeutic-grade, food-grade (for cooking and ingesting as a dietary supplement), and can be used in a diffuser or applied topically. The versatility of a high quality essential oil is priceless and particularly useful for today’s men and women who seek lifestyles that are more natural and bring wellness benefits.

Grapefruit the Great Fruit

by David Stewart, Ph.D., R.A., D.N.M.

The Latin name for grapefruit is Citrus paradisi , which means, Fruit of Paradise. There were no Grapefruit trees in the Garden of Eden, but considering the many virtues of the fruit, maybe they should have been there.

Grapefruit (also known as pomelo) is a hybrid, a fruit-bearing tree created by the union of Citrus sinensis and Citrus maxima (also called Citrus grandis). The first of these (C. sinensis) is the common sweet orange. The second (C. maxima or grandis) is a large some-what sour fruit called the pummelo that is closely related to the lemon.

The odd name for this rather large ungrapelike fruit seems to originate from the fact that grapefruits grow in clusters of 12-24, like huge bunches of grapes. At least, that is the theory held by most botanists. Other authorities say that to them the taste of grapefruit is very much like the taste of grapes and, thus, could be another possible source for the name. Personally I don’t find the taste of a grapefruit to be anything like that of a grape. So I favor the bunch theory for the name.

Where Did Grapefruits Come From?

Historians and botanists are not certain of the origin of this cross between species and do not know exactly why, how, and by whom such a marriage was ever made. It did not exist in ancient times. The best guess is that it originated in Jamaica some time after Columbus landed in the West Indies in 1492, although some argue that it originated in the islands of southeastern Asia where pummelo trees are indigenous and common. One thing is certain: the versatility and benefits of grapefruit truly are amazing.

Grapefruit has long been considered a helpful food for weight loss. It is a refreshing, satisfying snack one can enjoy with no concern over calories. Grapefruit oil can also be used as an appetite suppressant, when mixed with drinking water, put on the tongue, or simply inhaled. Grapefruit oil also dissolves fat and has been used to address cellulite.

It is also said to help with acne, digestion, fluid retention, and disorders of the liver, kidneys, vascular, and lymphatic systems. It has also been used to assist in drug withdrawal.

Its fragrance is mood elevating and has been used as an anti-depressant. It has also been applied for migraine headaches, pre-menstrual tension, fatigue, and jet lag.

Five Drops in an Olympic Pool

One of the amazing facts about the fragrance of grapefruit oil is that the distinctly characteristic aroma that identifies and sets grapefruit oil apart from all other citrus oils is from a trace compound. All citrus oils are composed mostly of the same compound, a monoterpene called d-limonene. It is d-limonene that gives they all the common smell of citrus. Yet it is not difficult to distinguish fragrances between orange, lemon, lime, tangerine, mandarin, and grapefruit oils. The differences are in their minor and trace compounds.

Grapefruit oil is over 90% d-limonene, but it contains something not found in any other citrus oil. It is a sulfur compound, whose strange name is 1-p-menthen-8-thiol, that dominates the smell of grapefruit. Without it, grapefruit would not smell like grapefruit. Yet, this compound comprises only one part per billion of the whole oil. That is equivalent to less than five drops in an olympic swimming pool. It would take highly sophisticated laboratory analysis equipment to detect such a tiny amount of a compound in an oil, yet your nose is sensitive enough to instantly detect this trace ingredient and your body makes use of it in receiving the therapeutic benefits unique to grapefruit.

Importance of Retaining Trace Compounds in an Oil

This is yet another example of why only therapeutic grade oils, which retain all of the trace compounds, should be used for healing purposes. Food and perfume grade oil companies care only about compounds in an oil that provide taste and odor [more on quality]. Therefore, such producers do not exert the extra effort to preserve minor or trace components unless they contribute to taste or smell. The healing properties of an oil almost always involve the minor and trace compounds, which do not always contribute to taste or fragrance, but are essential for therapeutic action.

The fact that a trace compound like 1-p-menthen-8-thiol can be detected in a grapefruit by the human nose, when present in such a minute concentration as 1 ppb, is proof that our bodies do sense, interact, and utilize the trace compounds in an oil that must be there for the healing properties of an oil to remain complete and intact.

The Smell of Feminine Youthfulness

Recent data have discovered yet another attribute of the multifaceted fragrance and properties of grapefruit.

A study of smells shows that the scent of grapefruit on women make them seem younger to men, causing them to underestimate the age of women by an average of six years. However, the fragrance of grapefruit on men does nothing for them.

The study by the Smell and Taste Institute in Chicago explored the question of what makes a woman smell young. The smell of pink bubble gum made women smell young, but too young. The odor of bubble gum caused men to think of women in their childhoods as little girls, not as younger, yet mature in their womanhood.

Institute director, Alan Hirsch, said he smeared several middle-aged woman with broccoli, banana, spearmint leaves, and lavender but none of those scents made a difference to the men, including the floral fragrance of the lavender, which is often used in feminine perfumes.

However, the scent of grapefruit altered men’s perceptions. Hirsch said that when male volunteers were asked to write down the ages of women with a grapefruit odor, the age they perceived was considerably less than reality.

So there you have it, ladies. The fountain of youth may be in the aroma of grapefruit juice, at least for women. Men have been smearing colognes, after shave lotions, aromatic oils, and other manly potions on their bodies for thousands of years, in attempts to make themselves more attractive to the opposite sex. As yet, science has found no fragrance to make men seem younger than they really are.

Have you ever thought how the mind and stress work together, and how stress can affect our overall well being? When our stress level is elevated, this may lead to many health issues, one in particular being inflammation, which in itself is the cause of a multitude of illnesses.  If we pay attention to the ‘warning signs’, we may be able to solve a health problem before it happens.

The cause of stress is something that is not easy to control and the outcome due to the stress can be very unpleasant to deal with. Sometimes when we are stressed, it is difficult to get away from the feelings it can cause.  For many they take a prescription drug and we all know that drugs have many side effects.  So why not take a minute to try to access the situation, figure out why you are feeling the way you are, and fix it with a natural substance from the earth, rather then a man made synthetic drug.

A few warning signs:

  • Anxious–Feeling of mental distress, worry about daily life, uneasiness, or fear
  • Anger–Feel displeasure, belligerence or impatience towards others
  • Unable to cope–Difficulty dealing with problems or responsibilities
  • Overwhelmed–A frantic feeling, running in circles trying to accomplish too many things at once and hardly getting anything done, a feeling of great burden.

These are all feelings that can be harmful not only to ourselves, but also to those around us.  Our stress, can stress them out too.

So what can we do?  First and foremost is to recognize when we are feeling stressed, in whatever form it is affecting us.  This is where a healthier mind comes in.  To deal with stress we must help our mind to combat the stressful state we are in.

Mood swings for many come suddenly and can be very upsetting. When you take a breath, by the time you breath out all of a sudden your mood has changed.  You could have been in a perfectly fine mood, then out of the blue something triggers a change to sadness, anger, worry, disappointment anxiety, or some deep seeded pain.

prozac-people-mood-depressionSo many emotions can be very debilitating, and many may have pills that their doctor may have prescribed because their mood swings are so intense. For many when they are feeling such despair, they may want to be left alone and just ride it out.  It can be difficult when one is feeling this way to even care about anything, anyone and especially not caring about themselves. Trying to figure out why the feeling is there is not easy to understand and at the time, you don’t really care, you just feel like “cr.. “.

Could it be diet that has triggered the mood swing? Like sugar. Or perhaps the environment you are in, or the people you were with.  Sometimes people can bring us down and they can zap us or drain us of our energy.  I think if we are able to take a few seconds or moments and think about what just happened that this may help. The next step is to reach for something natural to help take the edge off of the “blahs, anger, sadness, etc.”

Therapeutic grade essential oils are helpful for balancing energy. Notice how I am saying therapeutic grade essential oils. They are much different then perfume grade essential oils and understanding the difference is an important part of using essential oils for natural healing.  Please read more on quality of essential oils.

Essential oils carry the “life force” of the plant and this “life force” can help our “life force”.

Lavender therapeutic grade essential oil is a calming and uplifting essential oil and has many, many other beneficial qualities. It is called the “Swiss Army Knife” of essential oils, or the “Duct Tape”, because of its magnitude of healing.

Lavender would be an excellent essential oil to have on hand to help in balancing of mood swings. The simplest way of using it is, open the bottle and take several deep breaths. Also put a drop on your wrist and smell it. Pay attention to the change in your energy and mood. I’ll bet you will notice a change.  Plus it could come in handy for cuts or burns.

If you often have mood swings you might want to seek out an energy healer, such as Reiki. So far for me Reiki has been the best stress reduction technique that I have experienced from energy healers.  However not too many of us have the luxury of receiving such treats on a regular basis, so essential oils is the best way to go.
