Using therapeutic grade essential oils can be a very rewarding experience. If you haven’t given them a try yet and are the type of person who is looking to have a ‘Green’ / eco-friendly home and lifestyle this can truely be the answer to what you’ve been looking for.

I began using essential oils about 25 years ago, I was tired of paying expensive prices for organic and all-natural household cleaning products and took the leap into essential oils upon hearing that you could use them for anything cleaning, to healing wounds and headaches, to staying alert, and staying well.

The necessary ingredient was to locate superior quality essential oils, and I’ll tell you, that was no easy feat 25 years ago! I searched high and low and ended up buying the best essential oils I could find. But it wouldn’t be until 1997 when I found precisely the superior quality I was looking for, Young Living Essential Oils (YLEO). Since that day, I have used only YLEO and I only recommend YLEO, regardless if I had a YLEO business or not. As a matter of fact, I only used and recommended them for several years before I even decided to have a YLEO business, which was about 5 years ago.

These essential oils are by far the best in the world. Only 2 percent of all essential oils in the world are of this superior quality. Young Living makes up most of that 2 percent. Unfortunately, that means 98 percent of the essential oils you come across are far lower quality, so don’t be fooled by the terms: 100% pure or organic, there are a million ways to ruin an essential oil and only one way to make them right. You can learn more about that here if you’re interested.

But, what I want to cover in this article is one particular collection of essential oils, the Essenttial 7 collection. This is a terrific assortment of 7 of the most popular essential oils. So, if you’re new to aromatherapy and essential oils, take a look at some of what can be achieved… when you step into the world of therapeutic grade essential oils… you are stepping into a brand world, a new way of seeing things and a new lifestyle.  Besides being the most eco–friendly way to go, the other thing I enjoy most is the sheer simplicity and ease in using essential oils for everything, making the switch is not only fun but it’s empowering! Try it and see for yourself!

Applications and Use of the 7 Essential Oils

  • Dietary Supplements: All of the single essential oils in this collection may be used as dietary supplements. Remember, all essential oils from YL are potent and superior quality, rarely will an adult use more than 2-6 drops of essential oil per “00″ capsule with a little olive oil added, or more than 1-2 drops added to a glass of water or milk. More on Immune System Tips.
  • Diffuse: All of the essential oils in this collection may by diffused – with the exception of PanAway. It’s not that PanAway would be harmful if diffused it’s more that it’s benefits would be wasted because this blend is designed to use topically for aches and pains of the body. Young Living has 5 diffusers to choose from. Using these diffusers will freshen the air eliminating the need for synthetic harmful air fresheners, provides the healthful benefits of aromatherapy (the simple act of inhaling therapeutic-grade essential oils, and helps to rid indoor air of germs and unpleasant. Never use a diffuser that diffuses by means of heat as heat or flame (as in candle diffusers) fractures the tiny molecules where all of the benefits are contained (more on heat and diffusing). For the curious, read…Viscosity of Essential Oils and How Quickly They’re Diffused and Smelly House to Aromatic Home
  • Topical Application: All of the oils can be applied to the Vita Flex points on the feet, added to bath water mixed with Young Living Bath & Shower Gel Base, applied topically or used with body and foot massage. More on Creating Your Home Spa and Massage and Bodywork.

"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who'll decide where to go." ~ Dr. Seuss

Hope essential oil with rainbow.I have heard stories that essential oils don’t work. Guess what, allopathic medicine doesn’t always work either. Have you heard the news that antibiotics, such as penicillin, is at the end of the road? Have you heard about MRSA and other resistant superbugs (which, by the way, have evolved because of the overuse of antibiotics)?

Briefly, allopathic medicine takes what is found in nature (mostly from plants, like the white willow), extracts what it believes is the key component(salicylic acid) to create a new drug (aspirin) to fight some disease. This is kind of like removing everything from a car except the engine – it may run but it won’t get you anywhere and after a while it will just stop working.

Each and every one of us is on this planet for a reason. I don’t know what it is, but I believe we are. We each have our unique challenges to overcome and goals to accomplish. While we all share the same basic body shape and body chemistry, each of us is slightly different. We are different ages, have different stresses in our lives, consume different foods and drinks, have different genetic makeups and genetic history. Because we are just a little bit different, each of our bodies react differently to the same situation, condition or food.

Allopathic medicine is now discussing and trying to develop medicine that is targeted to each individual – meaning that the medicine I would get for the flu is created just for me and wouldn’t work for you (I smell something fishy going on here). This is called - Pharmacogenomics.

So, you see, even western medicine knows that we are individuals and require different treatments for disease. Our ancestors had an implicit understanding of this and they tailored cures to suit. This is one reason you rarely find signs of serious diseases in preserved bodies and skeletons from thousands of years ago. They did not use a shotgun approach like allopathic medicine does today.

The western method of dealing with disease has been to treat the symptoms and not the cause – just look at the medicine ads on TV. Shrink the swelling, good for runny noses, etc. They should be asking why is it swollen, why is your nose running and deal  with the cause.

In my experience Young Living Essential Oils work on the cause on an individual basis.

Here is an example of what I am talking about. I was doing some work a few years back and my back was getting sore. I still have my western mindset moments. Young Living has 2 blends developed just for pain so I tried each one and got a little relief, but wasn’t back to normal.

So, I reached out spiritually and asked what can I do? The answer came to me and was a bit of a surprise. Motivation, a Young Living blend. I tried to think of a logical reason why but couldn’t come up with one. However, I tried it and got immediate relief. I also got the sensation of a hole, as in the absence of something. The only conclusion I can draw is that Motivation did not work on the pain but instead worked on the cause because my back was fine after that.

There are many books about essential oils out there. Some are better than others. The books I rely on are the EODR, the Essential Oil Desk Reference from EssentialScience.net, and The Chemistry of Essential Oils Made Easy (mostly because I enjoy finding out the nuts and bolts of things.) I view these as starting points because each of our body chemistry is different and each of our environments is different – after just one application.

Each essential oils has anywhere between hundreds to thousands of chemical components that work together. Each type of molecule is used by the body in different ways and possibly in several different ways. So even though you may have a backache PanAway may not be the best choice as it could be caused by stress, strained muscles or an injury. The molecules in the essential oil blend PanAway may not be what the body needs to deal with the situation. In the case of my back pain PanAway didn’t work but Motivation did, so the molecules in the blend Motivation did provide what my body needed.

So, when someone says to me “I tried essential oils and they don’t work,” I gently remind them that they may not have tried Young Living Essential Oils and that western medicine is at the end of the road and if one prescription doesn’t work they are given another one.

I also remind them that drugs come with side effects – again, look at the drug commercials on TV. With essential oils you are dealing with safe alternatives, although there are a few that should be used with caution in certain circumstances. Then, I tell them that maybe the one they tried wasn’t the right one for their problem or the one they used was not 100% pure and unadulterated – which is ‘not’ a therapeutic-grade oil. To drive this point home I tell them that France exports 100 times more Lavender essential oil than it produces. How do they do that? By diluting it with something – possibly some kind of chemical.

Watch this humorous video.

Wiseman Oils Product Website

Wiseman Oils @ Young Living Circle

It’s a lovely late summer evening, I have the windows open to enjoy the beautiful night air while working, and… Ugh! About 10 minutes ago I started getting a headache from the smell of a neighbor using a dryer sheet. My throat and eyes are feeling irritated and are burning too. Dryer sheets have got to be the nastiest things on the market… well, that’s not entirely true, there are far more toxic things sitting on store shelves for unsuspecting consumers to buy. But dryer sheets rank right up there with all those other toxic products for unsuspectinghopper’s. Laundry and dryer sheets

It is so easy to get scented clothing in the dryer and not expose everyone and the enviorment included, to those disgusting toxic chemicals.

Here’s what is required to make GREAT smelling non-toxic dryer sheets…

One bottle of your favorite superior quality essential oil, such as Young Living (you don’t want to buy anything less than superior because they contain toxic chemicals too) and a damp cloth (like an old wash cloth).

You add 2-4 drops of your chosen essential oil to the dampened washcloth and toss it in the dryer with your clothes.

That’s it! It literally takes 2 seconds to make your own non-toxic dryer sheets!

The environment will love you for it, your neighbors with open windows will love the scent – they’ll even get the benefits of aromatherapy, you’ll be eliminating the toxic chemicals that get absorbed through your skin while you’re wearing your clothing, the factory making the toxic dryer sheets will be putting fewer chemicals into the air and environment (hopefully they’ll even stop creating them because people will stop buying them!), and your clothes won’t have that nasty synthetic artificial scent that smells disgusting when you’re out and about in the world.

If it sound like I hate dryer sheets… you’re right, I do. With a passion. I cannot wait for the day when those disgusting things are no longer a consumer choice! Apologies to those of you who are not aware that there are better options… I’m just feeling sick to my stomach from the smell.

Good essential oil choices for making your own dryer sheets:

Lavender Essential Oil Thieves, Citrus Fresh, Peppermint, Lavender, Joy, Peace & Calming, Sacred Mountain, Sensation, Inner Child, Into the Future, Harmony, Gentle Baby, Believe, and Clarity.

For pennies, you could be using something that smells good and is good for all living things. I highly recommend using essential oils instead. And provided you use Young Living essential oils to make your own dryer sheets, you’re not going to stain your clothing – other brands put all kinds of extender oils in them which can stain clothing.

Additional Recommendation for Those Who are Going ‘Green’ / Eco-friendly

Try using 1-2 teaspoons of Thieves Household Cleaner in place of all laundry detergents and all laundry products – you’ll save money, won’t be polluting the environment, your clothes will smell better, and again you will not be absorbing toxic chemicals in laundry detergents. The Thieves Household Cleaner can also be used to replace every single cleaner currently in your home. Check it out and try some, you’ll be glad you did!

Common Sense Precautions When Using Essential Oils

• Young Living essential oils are highly concentrated. When applying topically, dilute one or two drops of essential oil in one tablespoon of pure vegetable oil. If any skin irritation results, add more carrier oil or discontinue use.

• Black Pepper, Clove, Cinnamon Bark, Marjoram, Thyme, Oregano, and Thieves oil are considered ‘hot’ spice oils, so test skin sensitivity first by applying a small amount on the inside of the arm with a little V-6 Massage Oil.

• Hot essential oils should always be used with a carrier oil, such as V-6.
Dilution with V-6: 2 drops essential oil to 1 TBSP V-6. Yes, you can always dilute your essential more if you like.

• Never dilute essential oils with water when being used topically. Always use V-6 or another pure vegetable oil.

• If essential oil gets into the eyes, use a drop of your carrier oil to dilute, do NOT use water.

• Never put essential oils into eyes, ear canal, or nose.

Essential Oils were not an option for maintaining health, prevention or healing where I grew up – which was a fairly isolated cove in central Pennsylvania where there were three towns of 2-3 thousand people in each and a smattering of smaller towns and villages. It is conservative by nature there and yet old ways were supplanted by new ways a long time ago.

I have always been into science (which may be related to my father being a science teacher.) Science has helped us to accomplish many things, the internet being one of them – which allows you to read my articles from anywhere in the world. I explored all aspects of science – biology, chemistry, physics and so on. I was an avid reader of Science Digest, National Geographic and any science publication I could get my hands on. I have a degree in computer engineering and am about halfway through a degree in education (majoring in physics).

As a young child when the doctor said I needed a shot I trusted my parents who trusted the doctor. But when I got older I started to subconsciously avoid taking [allopathic] medicine and got to the point where I would only take aspirin for a headache if it was a severe one. If I got the flu or a cold I wouldn’t take medicine. Instead I would just curl up under a lot of blankets and sweat like crazy for a few hours and be almost good as new.

As I would do my regular shopping, or visiting a local health store, I would often look at essential oils and wonder about them, but every-time I would pick them up, or if there was a “tester” smell them, I would get the shivers or something told me not to buy them. But the curiosity remained and I always was drawn to them.

About eight years ago (we are celebrating our 97th monthly anniversary) I met my girlfriend and was introduced to real, pure, therapeutic essential oils. After smelling them and trying them I did not get the same reaction that I had before.

She had been involved in a car accident a few years before I met her and her back was pretty painful for her and for a few years was unable to properly take care of herself let alone her property. She was into Young Living Essential Oils and through a combination of full body massage, energy healing methods and the Young Living blend Release we were able to get her back into shape in a relatively short time.

Between what I have been able to accomplish with energy medicine healing and what I was able to accomplish with my girlfriends’ back using essential oils I have become a firm believer in non-western medicine and essential oils. Now that I am using the best quality essential oils I can find (Young Living) I am no longer drawn to what passes for essential oils available in supermarkets and health food stores.

Energy Level of Volunteers at a Large Event

In the fall of 2005 I attended a 3 day intensive for personal development seminar and in the spring of 2006 I volunteered to work at the next one. I took along some NingXia Red singles to drink because I felt I was going to need them.

Now I am somewhat a skeptic (OK a big skeptic of big claims), but I do support products I like such as Apple computers and the Toyota Prius. I like NingXia Red, a lot (it’s almost like candy to me without the junk!), but I wasn’t prepared for what happened.

To begin with when core staff and volunteers met on the day before the event there was a notable synergy between all of us (which probably had quite a bit to do with what happened.)

The first day of the event I took a few singles to pass out amongst the staff and to put on ice for later – they were gone within 2 hours (you would have to understand how the behind the scenes works at this event to appreciate this comment (very few short breaks for the staff). The second day I took more and they too were gone within 2 hours and the third day I took close to a hundred of them and they disappeared very quickly as well.

In all, the volunteer staff probably averaged around 4 hours of sleep a night. The core staff? I couldn’t say.

According to the core staff (those who are paid to work at these events) this particular event had some very unique occurrences happen.

  • All of the volunteers got what needed to be done finished in record time with record accuracy and record results (in regards to assisting the attending students).
  • The level of energy felt by all of those in attendance (students, volunteers and core staff) was literally through the roof.
  • In events such as these the attendance goes down as time goes forward, but this time it grew (850 were expected and over 1,000 showed up – 20% growth)!
  • The sales of additional and supplemental materials was as large as a similar event 60% larger!

I am not trying to imply the tremendous results were due to NingXia Red in whole or to imply that it was a major factor, but I do believe it had a very large impact.

My Aura and NingXia Red

Another incident occured shortly thereafter. I was working a psychic fair introducing people to essential oils. At one of these I started talking to a lady who had a device hooked up to a computer (being a geek I had to talk to her about it) that supposedly was able to image auras. There was also a NingXia Red competitor there. I asked if I could try an experiment to which she readily agreed.

Like I said before, I am a big skeptic of big claims. I was curious to see how this thing worked and what my aura would look like on it.

We did a scan to get a base reading. I then took one of the singles and drank it while the machine was doing its thing. As we watched (it normally takes several minutes for the machine to do its thing) my aura went off the chart. In the three or four years she had been doing this she had never seen anything like it. To top it off green started descending into my head. Again something she had never seen.

To finish the test I drank the competitors drink and the white disappeard and my aura collapsed almost back to the base line. We both found this very interesting.

What is NingXia Red?

unknown.png

It is an infusion of Goji berry (or wolfberry – lyceum barbaum) from the Chinese Province of NingXia combined with:

  • Blueberry juice (provide anthocyanidin antioxidant power, cardioprotective)
  • Pomegranate juice (high in polyphenol and ellagic acid)
  • Apricot juice (provide beta carotene and vitamin C)
  • Raspberry juice (a rich source of ellagic acid)
  • Grape pomace (whole grapes, seeds and stems – water extracted)
  • Blue Agave (organic and low glycemic!)
  • Lemon essential oil (a rich source of d-limonene, promotes normal cell life cycles)
  • Orange essential oil (a rich source of d-limonene, promotes normal cell life cycles.)

It is non-pasteurized (meaning it isn’t cooked to death so the nutrients are retained.) It is made from the crushed Goji Berry giving you the health benefits of not just the juice but all of the berry.

Note that there is no caffeine, no questionable herbal stimulants, no cheap/unhealthy junk juices, and NO sugar added, not even an unhealthy sugar substitute. NingXia Red will not spike your blood sugar levels like other energy products. It is safe for diabetics to drink.

unknown.jpgThe Antioxidant Power of NingXia Red

ORAC and S-ORAC values – which ARE superior to all the other so-called energy drinks out there.

ORAC and S-ORAC scores of popular energy drinks. Note that this chart compares a “one ounce” serving of each energy drink shown.

We all know, and the experts agree, that eating raw fruits and vegetables is better for you than eating cooked ones. In todays world we aren’t eating well enough – too many fried foods, too many highly processed foods and foods that have been altered to give look and “taste” but losing nutrients as shown in a study done in 2006. Even as late as 2007 our neighbor to the north (Canada) has shown this to be true.

Since we are not eating properly  we need to start eating better and upping our nutrient intake – my recommendation, if you can’t have good food for each meal, is  to start your day with an ounce or two of NingXia Red and another ounce or so around midday.

There are a million reasons why couples break-up. Regardless of the reason, we still need to maintain a healthy mental and emotional balance and keep our physical body properly nourished. Here are several tips, using aromatherapy with therapeutic-grade essential oils to help make the transition easier and healthier for you.

Aromatherapy: Helping Yourself Through the Emotions of a Relationship Break Up

The fragrance of a therapeutic-grade essential oil can directly affect everything from your emotional state to your lifespan. It’s important to note that all essential oils are not created equally, 100% pure or organic essential oils will not produce the same results as a therapeutic-grade oil (more).

What makes them unique, essential oils work differently than any other natural substance?

Unique features of essential oils are:

  • Pass easily through our skin and cells membranes
  • Diffuse through the entire body within half an hour
  • Go directly to the brain through the olfactory bulb
  • Affect our feelings and thoughts because smell is our most emotional sense
  • Perform multiple functions because of their structural complexity

This explains ‘why’ one essential oil, using only a couple of drops, can do so many different things for you all at the same time – emotionally, physically, and mentally.

When any scent or fragrance is inhaled, the odor molecules travel up the nose where they are trapped by olfactory membranes that are protected by the lining inside the nose. Each odor molecule fits like a little puzzle piece into specific receptor cell sites that line a membrane, known as the olfactory epithelium. Each one of these hundreds of millions of nerve cells is replaced every 28 days. When stimulated by odor molecules, this lining of nerve cells triggers electrical impulses to the olfactory bulb in the brain. The olfactory bulb then transmits the impulses to the gustatory center (where the sensation of taste is perceived), the amygdala (where emotional memories are stored), and other parts of the limbic system of the brain. Olfactory chart, pathway how scent affects emotions

Because the limbic system is directly connected to the parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone balance, therapeutic-grade essential oils can have profound physiological and psychological effects. The sense of smell is the only one of the five senses directly linked to the limbic lobe of the brain, our emotional control center.

Scent stimulates nerves to fire in the emotional center of the brain, but it also stimulates the master gland to release hormones. Hormones affect the fight/flight response, as well as digestion and heart rate. In this way, essential oils can affect us in many ways all at once, just through their fragrance.

Anxiety, depression, fear, anger, and joy all emanate from this region. The scent of a special fragrance can evoke memories and emotions before we are even consciously aware of it. When smells are concerned, we react first and think later. All other senses (touch, taste, hearing, and sight) are routed through the thalamus, which acts as the switchboard for the brain, passing stimuli onto the cerebral cortex (the conscious thought center) and other parts of the brain.

The reason we are able to make instantaneous associations resides in the limbic region of the brain. The limbic system, known as the ‘seat of emotions’ [ Molecules of Emotion, Candace B. Pert, Ph.D. ], is the place where ‘scent’ begins and where our thoughts, responses, or reactions start.

For instance, the essential oils of frankincense and sandalwood are very high in a natural chemical compound called ‘sesquiterpenes’. Sesquiterpenes are known to increase oxygen in the limbic region of the brain. Increased oxygen to the brain can provide any number of benefits from a better attitude to being more alert. And that, is only the beginning!

Studies at new York University showed and proved that the amygdala gland (the gland in the limbic system responsible for storing and releasing trauma in the body) does not respond at all to sound, sight, or touch. They found in fact that the amygdala only releases emotional trauma through the sense of smell.

Methods of Application for Using Essential Oils to Balance Emotions Directly inhale essential oils

  1. Inhale directly. To do this you would hold the opened bottle somewhere between the naval and center of the chest, inhale deeply several times.
  2. Apply topically. Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Frankincense or any of the mentioned above can be worn as a perfume or cologne. Simply put one drop in the palm of the hand, rub palms together lightly then rub palms on jaw-line, neck, shoulders, wrists, pressure points. Then, cup palms over the nose and inhale deeply 3 times. A modified version of this be to simply rub that one drop on the palms onto your pillow case at night. You would probably not want to apply Myrrh on its own in this way because it’s a fairly thick essential oil and could feel too thick on the skin and alone it could stain fabrics.
  3. Indirectly diffuse. Put a few drops on a cotton ball or tissue and stick the cotton ball or tissue in the vent of the home A/C or in the vents of your car. During plane travel, the cotton ball or tissue can be put in a small baggie, when needed simply open the baggie and take some deep breaths.
  4. Make a room spray. This is one of my favorite ways to scent a room fast. In a 32 oz. spray bottle, fill 7/8 full with water, then add a total of 20-30 drops of your chosen essential oil, or a combination of essential oils. Shake, then spray into the room like you would an air freshener.
  5. Diffuse. This is done by  using an essential oil diffuser. Keep in mind that not all diffusers are created equal. The least you would want to know is that you never want to expose your therapeutic essential oil to heat as heat fractures the tiny molecules, rendering the benefits of the superior essential oil useless. Instead, you would want to use a diffuser that deploys the essential oil into the air by either cold-air in a nebulizer diffuser, ultrasonically, or a fan diffuser. I personally prefer the cold-air nebulizer type of essential oil diffuser because it’s extremely versatile and puts a microfine mist of the essential oil into the air where it belongs if you’re desiring the most benefit possible. Look over the types of diffusers that are best for use with a superior quality essential oil and see which resonates most with you.

Of course, learning what went wrong is the best way to help us not repeat the same mistakes again and again. Below is an article by Jeff Herring that may help you either repair a broken relationship or what to do to avoid ending up in another relationship that doesn’t work…

7 Tips for Great Relationships by Jeff Herring

1. Commitment

True commitment means much more than simply committing to staying married. Here’s one of my favorite quotes about marriage: “When you marry, you don’t marry one person, you marry three: The person you think he is; the person he really is; and the person he is going to become as a result of marrying you.”

Key strategy: Genuine commitment involves being committed to the growth and best interest of your partner. Or as one wise married person said to me, “What’s good for my partner, is good for me.”

2. Teamwork

There was once a couple who went by the name of Mr. Neat and Ms. Clean. Mr. Neat could bathe in a shower full of soap scum and not mind at all as long as the towels and soap were neat and in their place. Ms. Clean could have piles and piles of stuff scattered everywhere, as long as the piles were clean. This couple can have either a very neat and clean home or a real mess on their hands, depending on their ability to work together as a team.

Key strategy: Use the five most important words in marriage: “Let’s try it your way.”

3. Communication

Without exception, every couple I have ever worked with struggles with effective communication. Part of the reason is that two people with the exact same communication style rarely marry each other. Because of this factor, we oftentimes misunderstand what the other person is saying and then react to what we think we have heard.

Key strategy: Use the 10 most important words in marriage-”Let me see if I get what you are saying.”

4. Meeting emotional needs

In the same way that two people with the same communication style rarely marry each other, spouses rarely have the same emotional needs. What happens is that each of us give what we would most like to get, but the other person may not want that at all.

Key strategy: Discover and then meet the emotional needs of your partner. How? Simple. Just ask!

5. Resolving conflict

Conflict in marriage is inevitable. Fighting is optional. For some folks that’s a revolutionary idea. The bottom line is that many times in marriage you have a choice: You can be right or you can be happy, but you can’t be both.

Key strategy: Stay away from “my way” or “your way” battles. Focus on “our way” solutions, or as Stephen Covey says, “win-win” solutions.

6. Apology and forgiveness

“Love means never having to say you’re sorry” the theme from the movie “Love Story” has just one problem-one person died and the couple didn’t get to see the long-term damage of never saying you’re sorry.

Key strategy: On a regular basis, practice the three A’s of successful relationships: Apologize for something from the past, appreciate something in the present and anticipate something in the future.

7. Creating a relationship vision

Most couples spend more time planning a three-day getaway than they do planning what kind of marriage they would like to have. Vision has been defined as “the ability to see beyond the probable by envisioning the possible … the act of dreaming without restriction opens up possibilities that you could not have considered before … ”

Key strategy: Ask yourself and each other this question-”If we knew we couldn’t fail, and we could design our relationship any way that we wanted it, how would we like it to be?”

Jeff Herring, MS, LMFT, marriage and family therapist.

Sometimes obsessive behavior and thoughts can take over and turn an ordinarily sane person to do some kooky things, in cases such as that it’s always good to consult with a specialist.

Jeff Herring used to coach singles and couples to live the life they love with the love of their life. Jeff is also a speaker and syndicated relationship columnist in newspapers all over the world. While he is no longer practicing relationship coaching his articles are still noteworthy and timely.

One is Relationship Advise: After the Break Up – Creating an Exit Door in Your Heart, the second is Relationship Tune Up – 7 Key Points to Avoid a Break Up or Break Down and the third is Relationship Advise: Why Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston Broke Up and What We Can Leaarn From Them.

If you are looking for it, you can find relationship advice and wisdom in all kinds of places.

I found an important piece of relationship advice recently while watching a “Friends” rerun.

Monica and Chandler, now a married couple, are talking in their kitchen. Just in case you are not familiar with the show, Monica is a neat freak bordering on obsession. Chandler, feeling a wee bit amorous, sweeps everything off the kitchen table, and with a come hither look, motions for Monica to climb up on the table so they can make love.

Monica responds with this great line:

“Chandler! Making a mess to get me in the mood!?! C’mom, know your audience!”

Knowing Your Audience

I think that is great relationship advice, especially for long term relationships.

Once a couple has been together for a while, each person begins to develop a data base on the other. If they are paying attention. Sometimes that is a big if.

We so often act like we have no knowledge or experience of the other person, and then are stunned when things don’t go well.

Part of sustaining a long term relationship it becoming an expert on at least one other person in the world beside yourself.

It’s also a great definition of love. ~ Jeff Herring

"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who'll decide where to go." ~ Dr. Seuss

Entering a space can make us feel immediately light and uplifted. Or, leave us feeling depleted and drained. These very real feelings our bodies and minds experience are a direct response to the energy of that environment. Every space has energy, whether solid or seemingly empty, it is composed of infinite energy. Learning a few simple techniques on how to cleanse the space can have a dramatic influence on the way we feel and on every aspect of our life. These Space Clearing techniques can be used as often as you like so your home or office is much more harmonious and balanced. Shifting energy in the home

Space Clearing techniques have been used throughout history. The methods and tools vary from culture to culture, but the intent is the same – to create greater harmony and balance. Native Americans used: drums, rattles, and smudged (sage, cedarwood or juniper). Chinese used: gongs, chanting, and incense. Medieval Europe, salt and prayers cleared the energy. The Middle East: smoldering resins of frankincense and myrrh were used to invite blessings into a home.

These forgotten ceremonies that brought vitality to human structures generations ago are being used again to instill peace and equilibrium. These ancient rituals can be adapted for modern day use, and most important. A home or business that has been purified not only feels better but sometimes, in seemingly mystical ways, health improves, relationships deepen and prosperity expands.

A Space Clearing can be done at any time, I like to do a good clearing 2-3 times a year, as well as monthly maintenance. Early morning hours (especially after a waxing full moon the night before) seems to offer the freshest an most potent energy.

Preparing the Space

The most powerful Space Clearing occurs in a place that has been physically cleaned and cleared of clutter. Clutter is any accumulation of things that impede the flow of energy, chi, in your home. If you have stuff/furniture that prevents a door from opening fully move it or get rid of it, all doors need to open fully for good chi to circulate.

Preparing Yourself

The strength of your Clearing can depend on your ability to intuitively sense energy. Clarify your intention, project your will into a space. Determine what your intention will be: to calm, add vitality, get rid of argument energy, bring new life/growth, soothe grief – whatever it might be, set your intention before you begin.

Cleanse yourself before starting, bathe or shower, and wash your hair. If you cannot wash your hair, then at least stroke water over the top of your head. Traditionally, cleansing the top of the head allows for an unclouded connection between you and spirit. Your clothes should be clean and specially chosen for the occasion (not everyday clothes).

State of Mind: it is best to feel mentally and emotionally balanced, confident and relaxed.

Space Clearing Tools

The tools you use should be carefully chosen and reserved for Space Clearing purposes. Your tools can be made from objects you’ve gathered: stones, sticks, recycle the metal tubes from an old windchime – get creative! There’s only one thing you need to be mindful of, tools need to have a nice crisp clear sound when struck together. For instance, sticks that sound good when struck together, can be given special meaning if you sand and decorate them.

Your tools can range from: drums, rattles, bells, or even baby or pet squeaky toys. Keep tools in a special place when not in use. What’s most important is the sound quality and how you feel towards the tool.

There is one tool that I have found to be extremely effective that I use at the end of my Space Clearing ceremonies and I also use it once a month for maintenance… a CD called “Singing Bowl Meditation /1″ by Hans DeBack. This CD is excellent. I usually don’t hang around while it’s playing as it’s pretty intense because I turn the volume up fairly loud, but I LOVE the way it shifts energy in about an hours time! It’s worth the effort to get a copy.

The Blessing Altar

This is a temporary altar used to place your tools and serves as a beginning and ending point for your ceremony. Lay down an altar cloth then arrange your tools, have an offering(s) (flowers, salt, rice, and arrange stones or shells in a meaningful pattern) – this is a sacred center, a vortex of energy for the clearing. When starting, this is where you call upon spiritual assistance and support, and end with gratitude and blessings. Here are two ideas for creating altars…

An Altar for Love

  • Sage and salt are for purifying blockages to love and romance.
  • A rose colored altar cloth represents warmth and affection.
  • Flowers bring a feeling of freshness, vitality and new hope.
  • A bell and white feathers invoke love and romance into the home.
  • Two small bowls, one with rice, one salt, are for grounding and abundance.

An Altar for Peace

  • A deep blue altar cloth instills serenity and a peaceful energy.
  • Crystals for clarity and equanimity.
  • A metal chime and blue feathers invoke tranquility.
  • Cornflowers symbolize calmness.
  • Shells or stones in a spiral pattern represent life-force energy of the Creator.

How to Use Sound

Sound has the ability to restore harmony in objects, people and environments. Any musical instrument can be used, though it is preferable to use one that can be carried into each room easily. Before beginning your clearing, hold your instrument close to your body and imagine your energy merging with its spirit.

Then, slowly walk around each room, striking your instrument, or ringing your bell, listen to the sound – when you pass by an area, particularly a corner, does it sound dull and flat? Listen to it speak. If it does sound off, continue using the instrument in that spot until it sounds better before moving onward.

Once you go through your home with your instrument, you can go through it again with a tool of a lighter, cheerier sound and do the same thing.

Using Essential Oils to Complete the Space Clearing

Once the second pass is complete walk through your house spritzing the air with your essential oils (see below), a nice finishing touch that sets the clearing and intended energy a bit deeper. Learn more about the Vibrational Frequency of Young Living Essential Oils.

Essential Oils to Shift Indoor Energy

While any of these essential oils can be diffused I usually prefer to use a spray bottle because it enables me to get into any nooks and crannies or focus more in a particular spot when I sense that location needs a bit extra.

In a 32 oz. spray bottle filled with water, add a total of 20-30 drops of any of these blends. Or, make up your own blend mixtures, some ideas…

  • Purifying / Strengthening – mix into spray bottle Grapefruit, Rosemary and Tea Tree.
  • Energizing / Harmonizing – mix into spray bottle Lavender, Geranium, and Bergamot.
  • Revitalizing / Invigorating – mix into spray bottle Clary Sage, Lavender, and Peppermint.
  • Balancing / Spiritual – mix into spray bottle Sacred Frankincense, Sandalwood, or Frankincense
  • Calming – mix into spray bottle Lavender, Chamomile, Orange and Sandalwood.
