Air Freshener

You are currently browsing the archive for the Air Freshener category.

Different essential oils have different viscosity, or thickness, and therefore diffuse at different speeds. A good reason for diffusing therapeutic-grade essential oils is that research indicates when superior quality essential oils are diffused they can increase atmospheric oxygen and provide negative ions, which inhibits bacterial growth in the air. This suggests that essential oils could play a very important role in air purification and neutralizing odors (not masking odors). Because of their ionizing action, essential oils have the ability to break down some potentially harmful chemicals and render them nontoxic. For instance, Lemon essential oil is terrific at breaking down products that are derived from petro-chemicals; simply putting several drops on a cotton ball can remove the gummy stuff left behind after you peel off a price tag, or motor grease from hands. Therapeutic-grade Lemon essential oil will also dissolve a Styrofoam cup.

For the purposes of this article, we’ll just stick with the rate at which an essential oil will diffuse in a cold-air nebulizer essential oil diffuser (shown in the image). This type of diffuser is the most versatile, easy to use, lightweight, easy to set up. Because it only uses only air as a means of dispersing the essential oil there is no worry about heat or flame, which can ruin the healthful benefits of your therapeutic essential oil. This type of diffuser puts a micro-fine mist of essential oil into the air where it can come into direct contact with unwanted odors and germs – it’s a terrific way to disinfect the air in the home or office.

Thicker Viscosity Essential Oils

Essential Oil Blends: Valor, Joy, Harmony, Endo Flex, Awaken, 3 Wise Men

Single Essential Oils: Sandalwood, Myrrh, Patchouli

These essential oils have a much thicker viscosity and therefore diffuse more slowly and create a bit more noise in the diffuser.

For example, to diffuse one 15ml bottle of Valor could take up to 48 hours or longer with the pump running continuously on high volume, which is unnecessary and wastes a lot of essential oil.

Thinner Viscosity Essential Oils

Essential Oil Blends: Citrus Fresh, Peace and Calming, R.C., Purification, Abundance, ImmuPower

Single Essential Oils: Lavender, Orange and Lemon

Are thinner oils and diffuse very quickly.

For example, a 15ml bottle of Citrus Fresh will diffuse within eight hours. Again, running your diffuser non-stop would be wasteful.

When and Why You Would Want to Let Your Diffuser Run Continuously

On the other hand, an essential oil blend such as Thieves, one 15 ml bottle of Thieves will last about 24 hours of non-stop running if the air pump on your diffuser is a more powerful 6 watt diffuser. In this case, using a 6 watt pump on your nebulizer diffuser  and running it non-stop is actually desireable when there is a mold issue and you’re creating a shock treatment to eliminate mold from your home. Read more about using Thieves essential oil blend for eliminating and preventing mold. By the way, it is far cheaper to ‘prevent’ mold, than it is to address a mold issue after it has begun showing itself.

Diffusing Essential Oils to Prevent and Eliminate Mold

Timers

Yes, your cold-air diffuser can be put on a light timer. This is a terrific option to use so that when you walk in the door from work your house will be all fresh, and ready for you. These timers are the same type you would find at a hardware store, the kind you would use for your lamps.

Additionally, let’s say you have some congestion from a cold, the diffuser can also be set to run for 15 minutes once or twice a night while you’re sleeping to help you feel more comfortable.

What NOT to do With Your Diffuser

Never add water  or a carrier oil to your essential oils or thin them with another substance as this will clog the jets and perhaps nullify the desired results. Vegetable or petroleum based oils will clog your diffuser so avoid using those too.

Essential oils are important to have on hand for camping.. Many times we may go unprepared and regret having left some items at home, so it’s nice to have a list to be reassured and not leave home without important items, especially for first aide.

It is most likely that there will be pesky bugs, lots of sun and maybe even a scrape or two. Perhaps while roasting marshmallow’s someone could get a burn from the hot marshmallow or a sunburn from too much sun. So, it’s definitely a good idea to be prepared for the unexpected that we hope won’t happen while camping.

The following is a list of essential oils to take along and how to use them for various situations. After each application, always follow with smelling the essential oil with the remainder of the scent that is on your hands, cup your hands over your nose and take several nice long deep inhalations. (Be mindful to not touch your face with your hands, just cup your hands about an inch away from your nose and face.)

There are plenty of products out there that claim to be ‘Green’ but did you know that just because the label says it’s eco-friendly, all-natural, or organic, doesn’t mean the contents are as safe as you think. The fact is, according to regulations a natural product ‘can’ contain toxic chemicals, the ‘natural’ part comes into play through something I find rather misleading. Most products have a long list of ingredients and only a few of them are required to be truly natural in order to label or strongly imply a product is natural.

My way of making certain I’m getting what I pay for… I make my own!  Essential oil used by the drop

I don’t have time for messing around and creating time consuming products, whether for household cleaning, air freshening, or personal care, if it takes longer than 2-3 minutes I’m searching for a different solution.

Cleaning might be a chore, but it doesn’t have to be toxic, too! Safer products and practices are available and easy. Here are my favorites…

I have two cleaners in my home, one I’ve been using for the past 25 years, and the other I’ve been using for the past 8+ years – and I have no intention of switching now that I’ve found the best and fastest.

First, I make my own essential oil spray for cleaning surfaces and air freshening (this also works for freshening bed linens in the morning, excellent for making the bed). Here’s what I use to create the best all-natural spray:

  • 1 – 14 oz. Spray bottle
  • 15 drops Thyme essential oil*
  • 12 drops Spearmint essential oil*
  • 10 drops Orange essential oil (lemon or Tangerine is good too)*
  • 8 drops Rosemary essential oil*
  • 4 drops Eucalyptus essential oil*
  • 1-2 drops Patchouli essential oil* (optional for when I’m in the mood)
  • Water

I fill the spray bottle 7/8 of the way full with water, then add my drops of essential oil. Screw on the nozzle, give a little shake, and…

  1. spritz surfaces (and wipe with cloth, let any dampness simply air-dry, excellent for kitchens and bathrooms)
  2. spray into the center of the room (to freshen air of germs and odors)
  3. spritz interior dashboard surfaces in my car (wipe with cloth) and spritz into center of car to freshen the air further

*I ONLY use and recommend Young Living Essential Oils as they are the highest quality and I know that they will do the job (kill germs, odors, and disinfect) – these aren’t your typical aromatherapy oils that have no real benefit whatsoever, these are the real deal! By the way, these essential oils are extremely cost efficient too because they are used by the drop, they’re very potent.

The second thing I have is a bottle of Thieves Household Cleaner. This is a concentrate that smells great and you dilute it to make different concentrations for various cleaning tasks. Whether diluted in water in a bucket or a spray bottle the benefits of Thieves essential oil blend in this household cleaner makes it a unique and very effective all-purpose cleaner.

Tasks I use Thieves Household Cleaner for are: washing floors (wood, vinyl, ceramic tile), everything in my kitchen, everything in my bathroom (yes, even to clean the toilet bowl!), windows, mirrors, to wash my car, upholstery cleaner, fabric / carpet stain remover (undiluted or lightly diluted).

I also use Thieves cleaner in place of: carpet shampoo, laundry detergents, toilet bowl cleaner, and oven cleaner.

I make my own softscrub too: simply add 1 TBSP Thieves Household Cleaner to one cup of Baking Soda, stir well until uniformly mixed, and use to clean tubs, shower walls, sinks, or stubborn messes in toilet bowls.

Using the Thieves cleaner has saved me a fortune! Using my essential oil recipe above has also saved me a fortune!

These are so easy to make and use, it makes all cleaning tasks fast and pleasant. Everything sparkles and smells heavenly. Plus I have the added benefits of knowing all of the germs and bacteria I want eliminated are gone, and that I am NOT polluting myself, my dog, or the environment.

During my 37 years of keeping a household and cleaning, the above are the ONLY things I’ve been completely sold on.

"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who'll decide where to go." ~ Dr. Seuss

Is it possible that just by smelling a particular scent that your mood can change, tension and stress can be released, or even a stomach ache be relieved? If you answer yes, you are correct.

Take a moment and think about how a scent may change how you are feeling, mentally, spiritually, emotionally or even physically. Imagine walking outside and strolling into a wooded area. Do you notice a difference in the air? It feels fresher and you may automatically begin to take deeper breaths. When you do, can you feel a change, perhaps maybe begin to feel happier and “lighter” of spirit?

It is not always possible to have the luxury or time to be off walking in a forest, however you could still smell the scents and be rewarded with the feeling of being on a mountain top surrounded by majestic trees. How is this possible you may ask. Simply by having the wonder of a blend of essential oils; Spruce, Cedarwood, Idaho Balsam Fir and Ylang Ylang, which is appropriately named Sacred Mountain.

When you take off the cap and breath in the fragrance you may begin to feel emotionally grounded, yet having the feeling of soaring with a feeling of spirit, at peace and being humbled all together.

The combination of the essential oils in this blend are quite magnificent. When learning about and using therapeutic-grade essential oils you become familiar with and understand how they affect the emotions, spirit and physical body.

Spruce, Idaho Balsam Fir and Cedarwood are physiologically some of the best oils for bone, tendons and ligaments.

For broken bones apply Spruce, Idaho Balsam Fir or Cedarwood for the 1st 3 weeks to broken bones several times a day and then after that 2-3 times a day after that and strengthen bone density.

Spruce is also a very spiritual oil.  One may feel an emotional sense of lifting up, stress being released, a biochemical change from the brain to the limbic system, the mid brain, into the endocrine system, shifting the hormones, the adrenal glands, lowering the cortisol levels and creating a sense of calm and well being.

Idaho Balsam Fir is used for muscle, bone, ligaments, tendons, respiratory, and the brain, and may be helpful in lowering cortisol levels.

Cedarwood is one of the top three highest oxygenating oils for the brain, the other two being Vetiver and Sandalwood. They are all very close in sesquiterpenes activity, which is an oxygen molecule carrier to the brain. The more oxygen we have in our brain the stronger our brain functions, vision is better, hearing, smell, taste, less mistakes and reflex actions may improve.

Ylang Ylang is balancing of our inner self and may restore equilibrium, and may help to bring balance to unstable emotions.

We all can be so busy in our lives. Rushing around, and possibly becoming “scattered” emotionally. It is important to recognize these feelings and to take a few moments to be quiet and still, to ground and reconnect with our spiritual self and with Spirit.

Order Sacred Mountain

This is where Sacred Mountain essential oil blend comes in. You can either just take the cap off of the bottle and breath in the beautiful aroma, or apply a few drops to your neck, shoulders, wrists or chest. You may begin to feel a calming, strengthening feeling. Sacred Mountain calms and quiets your mind.

To understand a little bit more on how breathing in these scents works, read more on “Aromatherapy”.

If you live in the city, one way of bringing the “forest” into your home is by diffusing Sacred Mountain.  It is an exquisite air freshener and definitely safe to breath in the aroma. (Read my article:  “Chemical Free Air Fresheners”) You will be breathing in the natural scent of trees and if you take the time to sit, relax, close your eyes and be still, you may be surprised on how these scents change how you were feeling before you took this time to relax.

Whatever scent it is that may help to calm your mind, remember to recognize the very fact of this simple act, and how it may help to ease your mind of the worries that come up in our lives.
