Using therapeutic grade essential oils can be a very rewarding experience. If you haven’t given them a try yet and are the type of person who is looking to have a ‘Green’ / eco-friendly home and lifestyle this can truely be the answer to what you’ve been looking for.

I began using essential oils about 25 years ago, I was tired of paying expensive prices for organic and all-natural household cleaning products and took the leap into essential oils upon hearing that you could use them for anything cleaning, to healing wounds and headaches, to staying alert, and staying well.

The necessary ingredient was to locate superior quality essential oils, and I’ll tell you, that was no easy feat 25 years ago! I searched high and low and ended up buying the best essential oils I could find. But it wouldn’t be until 1997 when I found precisely the superior quality I was looking for, Young Living Essential Oils (YLEO). Since that day, I have used only YLEO and I only recommend YLEO, regardless if I had a YLEO business or not. As a matter of fact, I only used and recommended them for several years before I even decided to have a YLEO business, which was about 5 years ago.

These essential oils are by far the best in the world. Only 2 percent of all essential oils in the world are of this superior quality. Young Living makes up most of that 2 percent. Unfortunately, that means 98 percent of the essential oils you come across are far lower quality, so don’t be fooled by the terms: 100% pure or organic, there are a million ways to ruin an essential oil and only one way to make them right. You can learn more about that here if you’re interested.

But, what I want to cover in this article is one particular collection of essential oils, the Essenttial 7 collection. This is a terrific assortment of 7 of the most popular essential oils. So, if you’re new to aromatherapy and essential oils, take a look at some of what can be achieved… when you step into the world of therapeutic grade essential oils… you are stepping into a brand world, a new way of seeing things and a new lifestyle.  Besides being the most eco–friendly way to go, the other thing I enjoy most is the sheer simplicity and ease in using essential oils for everything, making the switch is not only fun but it’s empowering! Try it and see for yourself!

Applications and Use of the 7 Essential Oils

  • Dietary Supplements: All of the single essential oils in this collection may be used as dietary supplements. Remember, all essential oils from YL are potent and superior quality, rarely will an adult use more than 2-6 drops of essential oil per “00″ capsule with a little olive oil added, or more than 1-2 drops added to a glass of water or milk. More on Immune System Tips.
  • Diffuse: All of the essential oils in this collection may by diffused – with the exception of PanAway. It’s not that PanAway would be harmful if diffused it’s more that it’s benefits would be wasted because this blend is designed to use topically for aches and pains of the body. Young Living has 5 diffusers to choose from. Using these diffusers will freshen the air eliminating the need for synthetic harmful air fresheners, provides the healthful benefits of aromatherapy (the simple act of inhaling therapeutic-grade essential oils, and helps to rid indoor air of germs and unpleasant. Never use a diffuser that diffuses by means of heat as heat or flame (as in candle diffusers) fractures the tiny molecules where all of the benefits are contained (more on heat and diffusing). For the curious, read…Viscosity of Essential Oils and How Quickly They’re Diffused and Smelly House to Aromatic Home
  • Topical Application: All of the oils can be applied to the Vita Flex points on the feet, added to bath water mixed with Young Living Bath & Shower Gel Base, applied topically or used with body and foot massage. More on Creating Your Home Spa and Massage and Bodywork.

"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who'll decide where to go." ~ Dr. Seuss

It’s a lovely late summer evening, I have the windows open to enjoy the beautiful night air while working, and… Ugh! About 10 minutes ago I started getting a headache from the smell of a neighbor using a dryer sheet. My throat and eyes are feeling irritated and are burning too. Dryer sheets have got to be the nastiest things on the market… well, that’s not entirely true, there are far more toxic things sitting on store shelves for unsuspecting consumers to buy. But dryer sheets rank right up there with all those other toxic products for unsuspectinghopper’s. Laundry and dryer sheets

It is so easy to get scented clothing in the dryer and not expose everyone and the enviorment included, to those disgusting toxic chemicals.

Here’s what is required to make GREAT smelling non-toxic dryer sheets…

One bottle of your favorite superior quality essential oil, such as Young Living (you don’t want to buy anything less than superior because they contain toxic chemicals too) and a damp cloth (like an old wash cloth).

You add 2-4 drops of your chosen essential oil to the dampened washcloth and toss it in the dryer with your clothes.

That’s it! It literally takes 2 seconds to make your own non-toxic dryer sheets!

The environment will love you for it, your neighbors with open windows will love the scent – they’ll even get the benefits of aromatherapy, you’ll be eliminating the toxic chemicals that get absorbed through your skin while you’re wearing your clothing, the factory making the toxic dryer sheets will be putting fewer chemicals into the air and environment (hopefully they’ll even stop creating them because people will stop buying them!), and your clothes won’t have that nasty synthetic artificial scent that smells disgusting when you’re out and about in the world.

If it sound like I hate dryer sheets… you’re right, I do. With a passion. I cannot wait for the day when those disgusting things are no longer a consumer choice! Apologies to those of you who are not aware that there are better options… I’m just feeling sick to my stomach from the smell.

Good essential oil choices for making your own dryer sheets:

Lavender Essential Oil Thieves, Citrus Fresh, Peppermint, Lavender, Joy, Peace & Calming, Sacred Mountain, Sensation, Inner Child, Into the Future, Harmony, Gentle Baby, Believe, and Clarity.

For pennies, you could be using something that smells good and is good for all living things. I highly recommend using essential oils instead. And provided you use Young Living essential oils to make your own dryer sheets, you’re not going to stain your clothing – other brands put all kinds of extender oils in them which can stain clothing.

Additional Recommendation for Those Who are Going ‘Green’ / Eco-friendly

Try using 1-2 teaspoons of Thieves Household Cleaner in place of all laundry detergents and all laundry products – you’ll save money, won’t be polluting the environment, your clothes will smell better, and again you will not be absorbing toxic chemicals in laundry detergents. The Thieves Household Cleaner can also be used to replace every single cleaner currently in your home. Check it out and try some, you’ll be glad you did!

"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who'll decide where to go." ~ Dr. Seuss

There are a million reasons why couples break-up. Regardless of the reason, we still need to maintain a healthy mental and emotional balance and keep our physical body properly nourished. Here are several tips, using aromatherapy with therapeutic-grade essential oils to help make the transition easier and healthier for you.

Aromatherapy: Helping Yourself Through the Emotions of a Relationship Break Up

The fragrance of a therapeutic-grade essential oil can directly affect everything from your emotional state to your lifespan. It’s important to note that all essential oils are not created equally, 100% pure or organic essential oils will not produce the same results as a therapeutic-grade oil (more).

What makes them unique, essential oils work differently than any other natural substance?

Unique features of essential oils are:

  • Pass easily through our skin and cells membranes
  • Diffuse through the entire body within half an hour
  • Go directly to the brain through the olfactory bulb
  • Affect our feelings and thoughts because smell is our most emotional sense
  • Perform multiple functions because of their structural complexity

This explains ‘why’ one essential oil, using only a couple of drops, can do so many different things for you all at the same time – emotionally, physically, and mentally.

When any scent or fragrance is inhaled, the odor molecules travel up the nose where they are trapped by olfactory membranes that are protected by the lining inside the nose. Each odor molecule fits like a little puzzle piece into specific receptor cell sites that line a membrane, known as the olfactory epithelium. Each one of these hundreds of millions of nerve cells is replaced every 28 days. When stimulated by odor molecules, this lining of nerve cells triggers electrical impulses to the olfactory bulb in the brain. The olfactory bulb then transmits the impulses to the gustatory center (where the sensation of taste is perceived), the amygdala (where emotional memories are stored), and other parts of the limbic system of the brain. Olfactory chart, pathway how scent affects emotions

Because the limbic system is directly connected to the parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone balance, therapeutic-grade essential oils can have profound physiological and psychological effects. The sense of smell is the only one of the five senses directly linked to the limbic lobe of the brain, our emotional control center.

Scent stimulates nerves to fire in the emotional center of the brain, but it also stimulates the master gland to release hormones. Hormones affect the fight/flight response, as well as digestion and heart rate. In this way, essential oils can affect us in many ways all at once, just through their fragrance.

Anxiety, depression, fear, anger, and joy all emanate from this region. The scent of a special fragrance can evoke memories and emotions before we are even consciously aware of it. When smells are concerned, we react first and think later. All other senses (touch, taste, hearing, and sight) are routed through the thalamus, which acts as the switchboard for the brain, passing stimuli onto the cerebral cortex (the conscious thought center) and other parts of the brain.

The reason we are able to make instantaneous associations resides in the limbic region of the brain. The limbic system, known as the ‘seat of emotions’ [ Molecules of Emotion, Candace B. Pert, Ph.D. ], is the place where ‘scent’ begins and where our thoughts, responses, or reactions start.

For instance, the essential oils of frankincense and sandalwood are very high in a natural chemical compound called ‘sesquiterpenes’. Sesquiterpenes are known to increase oxygen in the limbic region of the brain. Increased oxygen to the brain can provide any number of benefits from a better attitude to being more alert. And that, is only the beginning!

Studies at new York University showed and proved that the amygdala gland (the gland in the limbic system responsible for storing and releasing trauma in the body) does not respond at all to sound, sight, or touch. They found in fact that the amygdala only releases emotional trauma through the sense of smell.

To learn more about the darker emotions (Shadow Side) and aromatherapy check out the eBook Young Living distributor David Zarza and I wrote at the Young Living Circle Store. Sandalwood essential oil

  • Idaho Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare) is antiviral, anti-infectious, antibacterial, and fights colds, flu, and infections.
  • White Lotus (Nymphaea lotus) is calming and relaxing. Helps one move forward in overcoming self-defeating thoughts. It uplifts and brings deep peace and comfort.

Methods of Application for Using Essential Oils to Balance Emotions Directly inhale essential oils

  1. Inhale directly. To do this you would hold the opened bottle somewhere between the naval and center of the chest, inhale deeply several times.
  2. Apply topically. Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Frankincense or any of the mentioned above can be worn as a perfume or cologne. Simply put one drop in the palm of the hand, rub palms together lightly then rub palms on jaw-line, neck, shoulders, wrists, pressure points. Then, cup palms over the nose and inhale deeply 3 times. A modified version of this be to simply rub that one drop on the palms onto your pillow case at night. You would probably not want to apply Myrrh on its own in this way because it’s a fairly thick essential oil and could feel too thick on the skin and alone it could stain fabrics.
  3. Indirectly diffuse. Put a few drops on a cotton ball or tissue and stick the cotton ball or tissue in the vent of the home A/C or in the vents of your car. During plane travel, the cotton ball or tissue can be put in a small baggie, when needed simply open the baggie and take some deep breaths.
  4. Make a room spray. This is one of my favorite ways to scent a room fast. In a 32 oz. spray bottle, fill 7/8 full with water, then add a total of 20-30 drops of your chosen essential oil, or a combination of essential oils. Shake, then spray into the room like you would an air freshener.
  5. Diffuse. This is done by  using an essential oil diffuser. Keep in mind that not all diffusers are created equal. The least you would want to know is that you never want to expose your therapeutic essential oil to heat as heat fractures the tiny molecules, rendering the benefits of the superior essential oil useless. Instead, you would want to use a diffuser that deploys the essential oil into the air by either cold-air in a nebulizer diffuser, ultrasonically, or a fan diffuser. I personally prefer the cold-air nebulizer type of essential oil diffuser because it’s extremely versatile and puts a microfine mist of the essential oil into the air where it belongs if you’re desiring the most benefit possible. Look over the types of diffusers that are best for use with a superior quality essential oil and see which resonates most with you.

Of course, learning what went wrong is the best way to help us not repeat the same mistakes again and again. Below is an article by Jeff Herring that may help you either repair a broken relationship or what to do to avoid ending up in another relationship that doesn’t work…

7 Tips for Great Relationships by Jeff Herring

1. Commitment

True commitment means much more than simply committing to staying married. Here’s one of my favorite quotes about marriage: “When you marry, you don’t marry one person, you marry three: The person you think he is; the person he really is; and the person he is going to become as a result of marrying you.”

Key strategy: Genuine commitment involves being committed to the growth and best interest of your partner. Or as one wise married person said to me, “What’s good for my partner, is good for me.”

2. Teamwork

There was once a couple who went by the name of Mr. Neat and Ms. Clean. Mr. Neat could bathe in a shower full of soap scum and not mind at all as long as the towels and soap were neat and in their place. Ms. Clean could have piles and piles of stuff scattered everywhere, as long as the piles were clean. This couple can have either a very neat and clean home or a real mess on their hands, depending on their ability to work together as a team.

Key strategy: Use the five most important words in marriage: “Let’s try it your way.”

3. Communication

Without exception, every couple I have ever worked with struggles with effective communication. Part of the reason is that two people with the exact same communication style rarely marry each other. Because of this factor, we oftentimes misunderstand what the other person is saying and then react to what we think we have heard.

Key strategy: Use the 10 most important words in marriage-”Let me see if I get what you are saying.”

4. Meeting emotional needs

In the same way that two people with the same communication style rarely marry each other, spouses rarely have the same emotional needs. What happens is that each of us give what we would most like to get, but the other person may not want that at all.

Key strategy: Discover and then meet the emotional needs of your partner. How? Simple. Just ask!

5. Resolving conflict

Conflict in marriage is inevitable. Fighting is optional. For some folks that’s a revolutionary idea. The bottom line is that many times in marriage you have a choice: You can be right or you can be happy, but you can’t be both.

Key strategy: Stay away from “my way” or “your way” battles. Focus on “our way” solutions, or as Stephen Covey says, “win-win” solutions.

6. Apology and forgiveness

“Love means never having to say you’re sorry” the theme from the movie “Love Story” has just one problem-one person died and the couple didn’t get to see the long-term damage of never saying you’re sorry.

Key strategy: On a regular basis, practice the three A’s of successful relationships: Apologize for something from the past, appreciate something in the present and anticipate something in the future.

7. Creating a relationship vision

Most couples spend more time planning a three-day getaway than they do planning what kind of marriage they would like to have. Vision has been defined as “the ability to see beyond the probable by envisioning the possible … the act of dreaming without restriction opens up possibilities that you could not have considered before … ”

Key strategy: Ask yourself and each other this question-”If we knew we couldn’t fail, and we could design our relationship any way that we wanted it, how would we like it to be?”

Jeff Herring, MS, LMFT, marriage and family therapist.

Sometimes obsessive behavior and thoughts can take over and turn an ordinarily sane person to do some kooky things, in cases such as that it’s always good to consult with a specialist.

Jeff Herring used to coach singles and couples to live the life they love with the love of their life. Jeff is also a speaker and syndicated relationship columnist in newspapers all over the world. While he is no longer practicing relationship coaching his articles are still noteworthy and timely.

One is Relationship Advise: After the Break Up – Creating an Exit Door in Your Heart, the second is Relationship Tune Up – 7 Key Points to Avoid a Break Up or Break Down and the third is Relationship Advise: Why Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston Broke Up and What We Can Leaarn From Them.

If you are looking for it, you can find relationship advice and wisdom in all kinds of places.

I found an important piece of relationship advice recently while watching a “Friends” rerun.

Monica and Chandler, now a married couple, are talking in their kitchen. Just in case you are not familiar with the show, Monica is a neat freak bordering on obsession. Chandler, feeling a wee bit amorous, sweeps everything off the kitchen table, and with a come hither look, motions for Monica to climb up on the table so they can make love.

Monica responds with this great line:

“Chandler! Making a mess to get me in the mood!?! C’mom, know your audience!”

Knowing Your Audience

I think that is great relationship advice, especially for long term relationships.

Once a couple has been together for a while, each person begins to develop a data base on the other. If they are paying attention. Sometimes that is a big if.

We so often act like we have no knowledge or experience of the other person, and then are stunned when things don’t go well.

Part of sustaining a long term relationship it becoming an expert on at least one other person in the world beside yourself.

It’s also a great definition of love. ~ Jeff Herring

"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who'll decide where to go." ~ Dr. Seuss

Entering a space can make us feel immediately light and uplifted. Or, leave us feeling depleted and drained. These very real feelings our bodies and minds experience are a direct response to the energy of that environment. Every space has energy, whether solid or seemingly empty, it is composed of infinite energy. Learning a few simple techniques on how to cleanse the space can have a dramatic influence on the way we feel and on every aspect of our life. These Space Clearing techniques can be used as often as you like so your home or office is much more harmonious and balanced. Shifting energy in the home

Space Clearing techniques have been used throughout history. The methods and tools vary from culture to culture, but the intent is the same – to create greater harmony and balance. Native Americans used: drums, rattles, and smudged (sage, cedarwood or juniper). Chinese used: gongs, chanting, and incense. Medieval Europe, salt and prayers cleared the energy. The Middle East: smoldering resins of frankincense and myrrh were used to invite blessings into a home.

These forgotten ceremonies that brought vitality to human structures generations ago are being used again to instill peace and equilibrium. These ancient rituals can be adapted for modern day use, and most important. A home or business that has been purified not only feels better but sometimes, in seemingly mystical ways, health improves, relationships deepen and prosperity expands.

A Space Clearing can be done at any time, I like to do a good clearing 2-3 times a year, as well as monthly maintenance. Early morning hours (especially after a waxing full moon the night before) seems to offer the freshest an most potent energy.

Preparing the Space

The most powerful Space Clearing occurs in a place that has been physically cleaned and cleared of clutter. Clutter is any accumulation of things that impede the flow of energy, chi, in your home. If you have stuff/furniture that prevents a door from opening fully move it or get rid of it, all doors need to open fully for good chi to circulate.

Preparing Yourself

The strength of your Clearing can depend on your ability to intuitively sense energy. Clarify your intention, project your will into a space. Determine what your intention will be: to calm, add vitality, get rid of argument energy, bring new life/growth, soothe grief – whatever it might be, set your intention before you begin.

Cleanse yourself before starting, bathe or shower, and wash your hair. If you cannot wash your hair, then at least stroke water over the top of your head. Traditionally, cleansing the top of the head allows for an unclouded connection between you and spirit. Your clothes should be clean and specially chosen for the occasion (not everyday clothes).

State of Mind: it is best to feel mentally and emotionally balanced, confident and relaxed.

Space Clearing Tools

The tools you use should be carefully chosen and reserved for Space Clearing purposes. Your tools can be made from objects you’ve gathered: stones, sticks, recycle the metal tubes from an old windchime – get creative! There’s only one thing you need to be mindful of, tools need to have a nice crisp clear sound when struck together. For instance, sticks that sound good when struck together, can be given special meaning if you sand and decorate them.

Your tools can range from: drums, rattles, bells, or even baby or pet squeaky toys. Keep tools in a special place when not in use. What’s most important is the sound quality and how you feel towards the tool.

There is one tool that I have found to be extremely effective that I use at the end of my Space Clearing ceremonies and I also use it once a month for maintenance… a CD called “Singing Bowl Meditation /1″ by Hans DeBack. This CD is excellent. I usually don’t hang around while it’s playing as it’s pretty intense because I turn the volume up fairly loud, but I LOVE the way it shifts energy in about an hours time! It’s worth the effort to get a copy.

The Blessing Altar

This is a temporary altar used to place your tools and serves as a beginning and ending point for your ceremony. Lay down an altar cloth then arrange your tools, have an offering(s) (flowers, salt, rice, and arrange stones or shells in a meaningful pattern) – this is a sacred center, a vortex of energy for the clearing. When starting, this is where you call upon spiritual assistance and support, and end with gratitude and blessings. Here are two ideas for creating altars…

An Altar for Love

  • Sage and salt are for purifying blockages to love and romance.
  • A rose colored altar cloth represents warmth and affection.
  • Flowers bring a feeling of freshness, vitality and new hope.
  • A bell and white feathers invoke love and romance into the home.
  • Two small bowls, one with rice, one salt, are for grounding and abundance.

An Altar for Peace

  • A deep blue altar cloth instills serenity and a peaceful energy.
  • Crystals for clarity and equanimity.
  • A metal chime and blue feathers invoke tranquility.
  • Cornflowers symbolize calmness.
  • Shells or stones in a spiral pattern represent life-force energy of the Creator.

How to Use Sound

Sound has the ability to restore harmony in objects, people and environments. Any musical instrument can be used, though it is preferable to use one that can be carried into each room easily. Before beginning your clearing, hold your instrument close to your body and imagine your energy merging with its spirit.

Then, slowly walk around each room, striking your instrument, or ringing your bell, listen to the sound – when you pass by an area, particularly a corner, does it sound dull and flat? Listen to it speak. If it does sound off, continue using the instrument in that spot until it sounds better before moving onward.

Once you go through your home with your instrument, you can go through it again with a tool of a lighter, cheerier sound and do the same thing.

Using Essential Oils to Complete the Space Clearing

Once the second pass is complete walk through your house spritzing the air with your essential oils (see below), a nice finishing touch that sets the clearing and intended energy a bit deeper. Learn more about the Vibrational Frequency of Young Living Essential Oils.

Essential Oils to Shift Indoor Energy

While any of these essential oils can be diffused I usually prefer to use a spray bottle because it enables me to get into any nooks and crannies or focus more in a particular spot when I sense that location needs a bit extra.

In a 32 oz. spray bottle filled with water, add a total of 20-30 drops of any of these blends. Or, make up your own blend mixtures, some ideas…

  • Purifying / Strengthening – mix into spray bottle Grapefruit, Rosemary and Tea Tree.
  • Energizing / Harmonizing – mix into spray bottle Lavender, Geranium, and Bergamot.
  • Revitalizing / Invigorating – mix into spray bottle Clary Sage, Lavender, and Peppermint.
  • Balancing / Spiritual – mix into spray bottle Sacred Frankincense, Sandalwood, or Frankincense
  • Calming – mix into spray bottle Lavender, Chamomile, Orange and Sandalwood.

Different essential oils have different viscosity, or thickness, and therefore diffuse at different speeds. A good reason for diffusing therapeutic-grade essential oils is that research indicates when superior quality essential oils are diffused they can increase atmospheric oxygen and provide negative ions, which inhibits bacterial growth in the air. This suggests that essential oils could play a very important role in air purification and neutralizing odors (not masking odors). Because of their ionizing action, essential oils have the ability to break down some potentially harmful chemicals and render them nontoxic. For instance, Lemon essential oil is terrific at breaking down products that are derived from petro-chemicals; simply putting several drops on a cotton ball can remove the gummy stuff left behind after you peel off a price tag, or motor grease from hands. Therapeutic-grade Lemon essential oil will also dissolve a Styrofoam cup.

For the purposes of this article, we’ll just stick with the rate at which an essential oil will diffuse in a cold-air nebulizer essential oil diffuser (shown in the image). This type of diffuser is the most versatile, easy to use, lightweight, easy to set up. Because it only uses only air as a means of dispersing the essential oil there is no worry about heat or flame, which can ruin the healthful benefits of your therapeutic essential oil. This type of diffuser puts a micro-fine mist of essential oil into the air where it can come into direct contact with unwanted odors and germs – it’s a terrific way to disinfect the air in the home or office.

Thicker Viscosity Essential Oils

Essential Oil Blends: Valor, Joy, Harmony, Endo Flex, Awaken, 3 Wise Men

Single Essential Oils: Sandalwood, Myrrh, Patchouli

These essential oils have a much thicker viscosity and therefore diffuse more slowly and create a bit more noise in the diffuser.

For example, to diffuse one 15ml bottle of Valor could take up to 48 hours or longer with the pump running continuously on high volume, which is unnecessary and wastes a lot of essential oil.

Thinner Viscosity Essential Oils

Essential Oil Blends: Citrus Fresh, Peace and Calming, R.C., Purification, Abundance, ImmuPower

Single Essential Oils: Lavender, Orange and Lemon

Are thinner oils and diffuse very quickly.

For example, a 15ml bottle of Citrus Fresh will diffuse within eight hours. Again, running your diffuser non-stop would be wasteful.

When and Why You Would Want to Let Your Diffuser Run Continuously

On the other hand, an essential oil blend such as Thieves, one 15 ml bottle of Thieves will last about 24 hours of non-stop running if the air pump on your diffuser is a more powerful 6 watt diffuser. In this case, using a 6 watt pump on your nebulizer diffuser  and running it non-stop is actually desireable when there is a mold issue and you’re creating a shock treatment to eliminate mold from your home. Read more about using Thieves essential oil blend for eliminating and preventing mold. By the way, it is far cheaper to ‘prevent’ mold, than it is to address a mold issue after it has begun showing itself.

Diffusing Essential Oils to Prevent and Eliminate Mold

Timers

Yes, your cold-air diffuser can be put on a light timer. This is a terrific option to use so that when you walk in the door from work your house will be all fresh, and ready for you. These timers are the same type you would find at a hardware store, the kind you would use for your lamps.

Additionally, let’s say you have some congestion from a cold, the diffuser can also be set to run for 15 minutes once or twice a night while you’re sleeping to help you feel more comfortable.

What NOT to do With Your Diffuser

Never add water  or a carrier oil to your essential oils or thin them with another substance as this will clog the jets and perhaps nullify the desired results. Vegetable or petroleum based oils will clog your diffuser so avoid using those too.

"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who'll decide where to go." ~ Dr. Seuss

Our own homes to be a real source of stress. Our homes are suppose to be seen as a place of safety – a sanctuary and retreat. Our homes continue to be important places of retreat from the greater pressures of our work environment and a place to relax and enjoy friends and family, away from the stresses of the outside world. Now more than ever, our homes need to be healthy centers of calm to support and regenerate us, so the idea that they may cause us stress may be a good place to start making some changes. Bedroom a place in the home for relaxation and rejuvenation.

The modern lifestyle of luxury, excess, technological reliance and/or dependency that we have created and adapted to is beginning to be more widely linked to health issues. Many of today’s health issues are directly related to the toxins in cleaning products and personal care products we use daily. These are not only a source of ill health for us but for our kids, pets and the environment too. Now more than ever it’s important to consider what we can do daily to restore, preserve, and maintain good health and wellness.

Good health is not just the absence of disease, it’s about having vitality and feeling joyful. This can become a very real possibility when we rethink what we use, what we bring into our homes, and our diet, and make changes to home our environment.

Our ability to cope with everyday events is a reliable indicator of our physical, mental, and emotional health. Each of the 7 stressors below has a major impact on our health health and well-being. Although a single stressor may be handled individually without unbalancing the body too much, the cumulative effect of a few can be extremely harmful to our physical and mental well-being.

7 Stressors in Our Homes

With the exception of “clutter and disorder” Young Living essential oils and Thieves Household Cleaner can play a beneficial role in helping each of us to have happier, healthier lives. See, 11 Ways to Improve Health, Happiness and Longevity

I know I personally can see how switching changed and enhanced the quality of my life. There is just no way I would ever even think of going back to using the same kinds of products I used many years ago.

When we consider the positive effect essential oils and other Young Living products could have on our well-being we just might find the quality of our life changing.

Five Easy Steps to De-Stress Your Home

1. Diffusing Young Living Essential Oils

This is perhaps one of the easiest ways to change the vibe happening in a home. If there are kids running around screaming and tense adults on the verge of biting off someone’s head the simple act of smelling therapeutic-grade essential oils from a nebulizer diffuser can make a huge difference. More on Diffusers and Diffusing

Essential Oils I Recommend for Diffusing to Create a Relaxing Home

Tip: it is healthier to buy bees wax candles unscented and get your ‘scent’ from a cold-air nebulizer diffuser as you will get the healthy benefits of both this way. Candle makers NEVER use high quality essential oils because it would make their candles extremely expensive. Thus, always assume – all candles contain either the lowest quality essential oils that have been adulterated, or they are using perfume oils that are entirely from chemicals.

2. Rubbing Young Living Essential Oils on the Soles of the Feet

Yup, it’s true… simply rubbing a couple of drops of Young Living oils on the soles of your feet or shoulders is another excellent way to help de-stress and calm things down. It’s also a good way to help protect yourself from colds and flu, and get a restful nights sleep. Don’t under estimate the power of rubbing a couple drops of therapeutic-grade essential oils on the soles of your feet!

Young Living Essential Oils I Recommend for Calming the Body, Mind and Soul

3. Shifting the Negative Energy in Your Home

As a Traditional Feng Shui practitioner and trained in Space Clearing, I love knowing that we each have the power to clean up any negative energy in our homes that are lingering from a tense debate or rotten luck.

Essential Oils I Recommend for Shifting Negative Energy

  • Sacred Mountain
  • Joy
  • Peace & Calming
  • Citrus Fresh
  • Idaho Balsam Firmore on this lovely essential oil

For more details, see how to use armatherapy to shift the energy of your home

4. Clear the Toxic Products Out of Your Cabinets

This includes getting rid of common products that are poisonous – PLEASE remember to NOT throw them in the trash, bring them to the hazardous materials outlet in your area because you do NOT want these products to end up in a landfill or duped down your drain!!!

Make the Switch – Learn which products I use daily around the home and in place of toxic personal care products.

Young Living Oils I Recommend for Cleaning the Home

  • Thieves (both the essential oil and Household Cleaner)
  • Citrus Fresh
  • Purification

See Thieves Household Cleaner Testimonials

5. Addressing Diet Essential Oil flavored tea

There are many things that can be done to create a much better diet and I’ll just cover a few basics which include avoiding all processed foods and sugar substitutes. Replace those with locally grown fresh produce and grass-fed meats. Bringing the body into an alkaline state can be very helpful in alleviating many undesirable health conditions.

Add a drop of Young Living Lemon, Grapefruit or Peppermint essential oil to your cup of tea, flavorful and soothing (see guidelines for using essential oils internally).

"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who'll decide where to go." ~ Dr. Seuss

Young Living has recently established 3 Frankincense oil distilleries in Oman, where they are distilling our newest essential oil, Sacred Frankincense (Boswellia sacra). The species of Frankincense Young Living has carried for years is Boswellia carteri, which comes from Somalia. Sacred Frankincense Essential Oil

Omani frankincense is regarded the world over as the rarest, most sought-after aromatic in existence. After careful negotiations with Omani officials, Gary Young was granted permission to build a Young Living distillery in-country, and take the resulting essential oil out of Oman. Until this partnership, no Omani frankincense had ever left the country, unless directly purchased by Saudi royals.

Sacred Frankincense is highly regarded as the frankincense of the ancients and the traditional spiritual oil of biblical times. Young Living’s Sacred Frankincense marks the first time any Westerners have been able to experience these unique, spiritual properties.

The Frankincense from Oman is Boswellia sacra, and this has just been released by Young Living in the USA (and will soon be available in Australia) under the name of “Sacred Frankincense”. The Frankincense oil from Boswellia sacra is the rarest and most sought-after aromatic in existence, originally only available to royalty. Young Living is the only company exporting Boswellia sacra oil from Oman.

Frankincense Fact Sheets

Sacred Frankincense (Boswellia sacra) fact sheet

Frankincense (Boswellia carteri) fact sheet

From Dr. Suhail, M.D. at the 2010 YL Convention

Cancer, arthritis and periodontal disease are also relatively unknown in Oman and Yemen because the population has access to luban (frankincense resin), which is chewed like gum. They also soak 4 or 5 pieces of this resin in water overnight and drink the water. Dr. Suhail, M.D. siad that they don’t even have a cancer ward in the hospital that he visits in Oman because so few people over there have cancer. He only knows of 4 cancer cases, all 4 cases being non-local people.

Differences Between Boswellia carteri (Frankincense) and Boswellia sacra (Sacred Frankincense)

There are 3 major classes of chemicals in Frankincense oil that appear to be responsible for its anti-cancerous action – the alpha pinenes, boswellic acids, and incensol.

Boswellia sacra (Sacred Frankincense) has fewer compounds in it than Boswellia carteri (regular Frankincense). In Sacred Frankincense, its alpha pinenes are 80.72%, compared with 52.64% in Boswellia carteri. The incensol in both species differs too (incensol is a heavier molecule, which is only captured with 15+ hours of distillation) is 0.82% in Boswellia sacra, compared with 0.4% in Boswellia carteri.

The higher alpha pinenes give Sacred Frankincense a more spiritual purpose. Alpha pinenes can also soften the cell walls (that in cancer cells have tended to become shell-like and thus resistant to treatment).

Gary Young also shared his personal belief that incensol (which is in higher proportions in Sacred Frankincense) will be very powerful for degenerative diseases. In contrast. Gary also suggested that Boswellia carteri would be the oil of choice to help the immune system, having a stronger effect on the immune system than Sacred Frankincense.

Sacred Frankincense Study

A short term study of the effects of Sacred Frankincense before, during and after 30 days of use involving 12 subjects:

  • Learning blockages improved in 67%
  • Reading difficulties improved in 63%
  • Memory problems improved in 80%
  • Motivation issues improved in 33%

When asked if “uses of Sacred Frankincense lead to significant changes in your life?”, 80% said “yes”. Subjects said:

  • Before use brain felt full
  • After the first use felt alive

More Frankincense Research

  • Summary of latest research papers that were mentioned at 2010 convention:
  • Cancer starts when the DNA code becomes corrupted. Frankincense oil acts as a cellular re-set button. So it’s not surprising that Frankincense oil is being extensively researched for its ability to repair DNA. In one particular study on DNA repair capacity, Frankincense out-performed all other essential oils used in that study, and had a DNA repair capacity of 45%, compared with the next highest oils which were Hyssop at 43%, and Balsam Fir at 36%.
  • Frankincense oil has also been documented to regenerate disc, cartilage and bone.
  • Therapeutic-grade Frankincense oil contains Boswellic Acids, which are potent anti-inflammatory agents, and which researchers are considering to be a future replacement for steroid treatment. Steroids are caustic to life and the body itself, damaging the thyroid and parathyroid, and damaging to the immune system. Frankincense on the other hand has no negative side effects.
  • One study showed that Boswellic Acids were able to protect against hepatitis, and were able to reduce serum cholesterol (the bad cholesterol – LDL) by approx. 38%
  • Another study showed how Boswellic acids in Frankincense oil induces apoptosis (cell death) in leukemia cells.
  • The University of Oklahoma concluded that Frankincense may treat bladder cancer.
  • Frankincense has also been used for all kinds of arthritis, chest infection, Crohn’s disease, colitis and asthma.

A note from Gary Young on Frankincense during 2008: Gary Young walking the Frankincense Trail

Over the past five weeks I have traveled around the world one and a quarter times, visited 11countries, experienced 36 hours of time zone changes, and took 30 flights to see our oil in production and meet with some of our partners in growing and distilling essential oils. They appreciate my personal visits and I had the opportunity to spend much time with them. They have great admiration for the mission of Young Living and respect for my 27 years in the industry.

A highlight of the recent trip was inspecting frankincense sources. We traveled to Nairobi, Kenya, where I was able to introduce Marc Schreuder and Mary Lou Jacobsen to our frankincense suppliers. The final leg of our journey brought us to Oman – home to the famed Frankincense Trail. There we were privileged to explore the historical route and felt blessed to traverse such sacred ground.

Interestingly, some companies claim they are purchasing frankincense harvested in Oman, but if they would travel there themselves, they would discover that frankincense is not commercially harvested in Oman and there are no frankincense distilleries currently in operation there. Upon talking with Omani resin brokers, they explained that the resin they export commercially is harvested in Somalia and Ethiopia and then shipped to England for distillation. Mary and I send love and appreciation to all, ~ Gary Young

Did You Know…

Researchers have discovered that the sesquiterpenes in frankincense help stimulate the limbic system of the brain (the center of emotions) as well as the hypothalamus, pineal and pituitary glands. The hypothalamus is the master gland of the human body, controlling the release of many hormones including thyroid and growth hormone.

Frankincense is being researched and used therapeutically in European hospitals and is being investigated for its ability to improve human growth hormone production. Today, frankincense is still used worldwide for both its ceremonial and medicinal use.

How the Consumer Can Determine Superior Quality Essential Oils

Frankincense is a commonly adulterated oil. Frankincense resin that is sold in Somalia costs between $30,000 and $35,000 per ton. A great deal of time, 12 hours or more, is required to properly steam distill this essential oil from the resin, making it very expensive.

Frankincense oil that sells for $25 per ounce or less is invariably distilled with gum resins, alcohol or other solvents, which is a cheaper process, but leaves the essential oil laden with harmful chemicals.

Sadly, when these cut, synthetic, and adulterated oils cause rashes, burns, or other irritations, people wonder why they do not get the benefit they expected and conclude that essential oils do not have much value.

I can always determine the quality of a company’s essential oils by looking at the label on their Frankincense oil – if it states “Not For Internal Use” – I know they make junk oils… Frankincense is edible when it is handled properly.

Ways to Use Sacred Frankincense

  • Diffuse – For up to one hour daily. Good for congestion and voice loss, calming to the mind, reduce mental strain, cultivate internal peace, and place past obsessive states into perspective.Diffuse this oil while practicing yoga, meditation, or prayer to deepen your experience and feel a connection to ancient traditions. More on Diffusers and Diffusing
  • Massage – Blend 4 drops Sacred Frankincense with 1 TBSP V-6 Massage Oil. More on massage and bodywork
  • Bath – Mix 4 drops Sacred Frankincense with 1 cup Epsom Salts or Sea Salt in a small dish, add to running bath water, soak for 20 minutes. This is good for circulatory support, respiratory support, exhaustion, and nightmares. It also has a good astringent effect on the skin; perks up older, more mature skin; and may assist the body in healing itself of wounds, sores, and ulcers.
  • Creams and Lotions – Sacred Frankincense can be added to a base cream or lotion to help with general skin tone and condition while reducing oily skin, rejuvenating more mature skin, and at the same time helping wounds, ulcers, and sores heal.
  • Wash or Use as a Compress – To assist the body in healing and to lessen the appearance of scars from wounds, add a few drops of Sacred Frankincense to the water when washing a wound. For other applications, apply diluted oil directly onto the affected area or use as a compress. More on essential oil compresses
  • Wear as a Perfume
  • Inhale – directly from the bottle or place one drop on palm, rub palms together, cup palms over the nose and inhale deeply thrree times
  • Dietary Supplement - Put two drops in a capsule. Take three times daily or as needed.
  • Topical - Apply 2–4 drops directly to desired area. Dilution not required, except for the most sensitive skin. Use as needed.
  • Chakra – Use on Chakra points. More on aromatherapy and Chakras
  • Meditation, Yoga, Prayer – Frankincense has a long history of use during spiritual practice, Sacred Frankincese is perfect for enhancing your practice. More on aromatherapy for Yoga, meditation and prayer

Gary Young on the Frankincense Trail

For thousands of years, frankincense was transported across the most desolate wilderness on earth: the Empty Quarter. This vast desert covers some 250,000 square miles and spans part of Oman, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

I grew up in an Idaho wilderness area, packing horses and mules and traveling across treacherous terrain. So it wasn’t so difficult for me to understand life on a camel caravan, as rugged men left their homes and loved ones to take their precious cargo of frankincense and myrrh north to market.

To travel with a caravan was a dangerous and sometimes deadly occupation. The desert itself could be a vicious opponent with violent sandstorms that could change the landscape, covering precious waterholes, creating huge new dunes and possibly burying a caravan. There were poisonous snakes and scorpions as well. But the most dangerous adversary of all came on two legs: robbers, thieves, and marauders determined to steal the resins worth more than gold.

I have walked and driven over the majority of the frankincense trails that brought the prized resins from southern Arabia to the ports of Gaza, Alexandria, and Damascus. I have such an appreciation for the rugged men who risked their lives to bring such a treasure to the world. That same spirit of adventure has inspired me to bring the very best frankincense and myrrh to today’s seeker of physical and emotional wellness.

Harvesting Sacred Frankincense

The process of collecting frankincense happens two times a year – once in the spring (March to May) and then in the fall (September to October). To harvest the resin, you have to take a little axe and chop the hardened resin crystals off the branches – but there’s a process that comes in the week before that.

To begin the process, you cut the bark of the frankincense tree and then it allows the liquid resin to ooze out onto the external part. Then, when it hits the oxygen, it starts to crystallize and harden. Naturally, the longer it is left on the tree, the longer it is present in the oxygen and the harder it gets. It takes about a week before you can actually come back and cut it off as a hardened resin crystal. So this is a week to two-week process from when you go in and you cut the tree to when you come back and collect the crystal resin. Then the crystal resin goes into the distillery where it is crushed into powder, put into an oil bath, and steam distilled to extract the oil from the crystal resin.

This process produces different types of frankincense resins. The one that is very white is called Hojari. Now, when I was collecting frankincense years ago and they said “Hojari,” I thought they were being very friendly and saying, “How, Gary?” And I said, “With an axe.” But this was Hojari. There are actually five grades of frankincense resin. The first grade is brownish resin. It has a lot of bark particles in it, and that’s very commonly used because there’s more of it available. But the Hojari is what was selected just for the kings and queens because it was the purest of the frankincense. Essentially Yours, Gary Young

Compounds from therapeutic Clove essential oil can inhibit growth of oral pathogens Streptococcus mutans (the bacteria in our mouth that causes tartar/plaque/cavities is killed by Clove essential oil), Actinomyces viscosus, P. gingivalis, and P. intermedia. This is terrific news for those who are looking for alternatives to chemical ingredients and fluoride found in most dental care products. The savvy consumer will also want to know that all clove essential oils are not created equally, but I’ll discuss that later in this article. clove essential oil

Importance of Brushing Teeth with the Best Dental Products

Researchers at Tokyo Dental College noted that more than 300 different species of bacteria are found in populations of several hundred billion in the human oral cavity. They estimated that this number reaches a thousand billion when the mouth is not sufficiently cleaned.

“More bacteria per square inch live [on the back of the tongue] than on any other part of the body.” ~ Dr. John Richter founder of the Richter Center for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Breath Disorders

“The terms oral health and general health should not be interpreted as separate entities. Oral health is integral to general health.” ~ the Surgeon General, 2000

Brushing is not enough to eliminate the bacterial, fungal, and viral presence in the mouth, these microorganisms typically hide between teeth and under the tongue.

Brushing mechanically removes between 30 to 60 percent the plaque and pathogens, it still leaves 40 to 70% of microorganisms.

Benefits of Clove Oil

  • Therapeutic Clove oil scores 10,786,875 on the ORAC scale (That’s no typo – it is almost eleven million!)
  • The essential oils of thyme, clove and cinnamon possess significant inhibitory affects against 23 different genera of bacteria. ~ International Journal of Food Microbiology.
  • Clove (Syzygium aromaticum), from the Orient, is hailed as an oil of great abundance; those who possessed it were considered wealthy.
  • Clove oil is one of the most antimicrobial and antiseptic of all essential oils.
  • Clove is anti-fungal, antiviral, anti-infectious, and antibacterial.
  • Clove works as a general stimulant and is used to treat sinusitis, bronchitis, cystitis, and cholera.

Clove Oil vs. Clove Oil

Most Clove essential oil is from other parts of the tree (not the bud). It’s much cheaper to distill these other parts as they produce more essential oil. The reality… the finished product is inferior because it does not contain all of the compounds that are beneficial. And this is what you find in most dental care products if they contain clove.

There are dozens of ways to distill an essential oil. There is only one way to do it right… and that makes all the difference!

How many other toothpastes and mouthwashes did I try that also contained Clove oil? Dozens!

And there are dozens more on the market with Clove oil, Tea Tree, and Cinnamon. What do they all have in common? They’re inferior in any number of ways and will not produce the kind of results I’m speaking of in this article.

While the essential oils from clove bark and leaves ‘may’ smell perfectly fine, the truth is… ONLY the essential oil from the Clove ‘bud’ contains the beneficial constituents and ONLY when the clove buds are distilled at the right temperature and proper length of time will you have a superior essential oil that contains all of the natural benefits.

“In addition to causing cell lysis in organisms responsible for plaque, gingivitis, and oral malodour, studies have shown that essential oil mouthwashes have strong activity against the gram-positive microbes such as Streptococcus mutans, that cause dental caries.” ~ R. Seymour, School of Dental Sciences, University of Newcastle, UK

“The potential value of antibacterial agents in control of plaque and gingivitis is now well established. One mouthrinse product containing essential oil has also shown promise and has been the subject of numerous short and long-term studies. Based on the findings of these studies, the product has been accepted by the American Dental Association.” ~ J. Moran, University of Bristol Dental School, UK

Inferior essential oils = a waste of money!

Thieves Toothpastes were tested at Weber State University and found to have potent antimicrobial properties against a wide range of oral microbes, including:

  • Streptococcus oralis
  • Streptococcus pneumoniae
  • Candida albicans

Therapeutic-grade essential oils have proved to be more effective as antiseptic mouthrinses than the FDA recognized plaque-control antiseptic drugs such as stannous fluoride.

Jean Valnet, MD, used essential oils for decades in his clinical practice stating:

“Essential oils are especially valuable as antiseptics because their aggression toward microbial germs is matched by their total harmlessness toward tissue.”

My friends who are in health care field have told me they see fluoride emergency cases all the time. Interesting how this is not common knowledge and the average person never hears about such things.

Did you know…

  • There is a Warning label on your toothpaste, even on all-natural brands? Look at the label on the box or tube.
  • Or, that the lining of the mouth has a 90% absorbption efficiency?
  • Even if you don’t swallow any toothpaste, you’re at risk from toxic chemicals. The mucus membranes inside the mouth are one of the most direct routes to the blood, the brain and other cells of your body, since the mucosal lining inside the mouth has about 90% absorption efficiency.
  • Both conventional and alternative medicines are often applied to the mucus membranes of the cheek or under the tongue for just that reason; it’s one of the fastest and most effective way to get chemicals into the body.
  • Popular toothpaste ingredients are so scary we are warned not to swallow more than what is used for brushing.
  • A 1999 study published in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology found that an essential oil mouthrinse containing thymol (found in thyme), methyl salycilate (found in wintergreen), menthol (found in peppermint), and eucalyptol (found in Eucalyptus globulus) was far more effective than a stannous fluoride antiseptic.
  • The eugenol in Clove has a long history of use for pain relief in dentistry and for rheumatism, arthritis and headaches.
  • Alcohol is not recommended to kill oral bacteria as it has been found to dramatically increase the incidence of oral cancer.
  • Promoters of fluoride mouth rinsing set the acute toxic dose of fluoride at 2 mg/kg body weight, the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Japan at 2 to 5 mg/kg,5 and some other investigators at 8 mg/kg. However, 0.1 to 0.8 mg/kg of fluoride has been estimated to have caused fluoride poisoning in the USA, resulting from troubles with fluoridated water systems and from ingestion of fluoride- containing products by mistake, more.

Unsettling News

While watching the news last night one of BP’s spoke-persons made a comment that the dispersant’s used in the Gulf oil disaster are no worse than those found in your toothpaste… hmmmm… at the beginning of the disaster I heard on the news that the dispersant being used was one that was banned from use in Europe because it’s horribly toxic.

There’s still enough oil in the Gulf that equals 5 times that of the Exxon Valdez spill in 1989… surely Mother Nature didn’t clean it all up over the past few weeks!

Few noticed in November 2007 when the American Dental Association (ADA) alerted its members via e-mail of a possible problem with giving babies fluoridated water: The ADA, fluoride’s biggest advocate, wrote that parents of infants younger than a year old “should consider using water that has no or low levels of fluoride” when mixing baby formula.

However, while public health agencies in some states, such as Vermont and New Hampshire, immediately issued warnings in the media based on the ADA alert, other states took months to relay the message. For instance, Florida’s Department of Health put the message on its website four months after it was issued along with a note that read: “Mixing formula with fluoridated water poses no known health risks.”

Clearly, there are plenty of conflicts of interest going on in all of the large industries and institutions. Until ethics and complete honesty are restored (I’m not holding my breath) – I certainly do not want fluoride, BP chemical dispersant’s, or any number of other known toxic chemicals in my mouth or being absorbed through the lining of my mouth. How can they possibly say these things are OK!? They can’t be thinking we’re that gullible… can they???
